SILVERSTONE Black & Silver Mini-ITX Media Center / HTPC Case

After releasing the ground breaking Fortress FT03 chassis in 2011, SilverStone engineers took on the challenge of making a smaller version to further increase the appeal of this unique computer form factor. Through intelligent planning and reengineering, the engineers were able to create the FT03-MINI, which improves on the simplistic design of the FT03 while reducing the size by 50%. Using 2.5mm thick, sand-blasted and anodized aluminum outer shells with no cable connectors and vents on all four sides to complement an efficient, organized layout, this chassis helps SilverStone to again set new standards in small form factor computers.

The interior of the FT03-MINI utilizes SilverStone's unique stack effect cooling layout so a Mini-ITX motherboard is mounted in 90 degree rotation to take advantage of hot air's natural tendency to rise. The FT03-MINI can accommodate graphic cards up to 10", support one 3.5" and two 2.5" drives, and even entry-level liquid cooling can be installed to satisfy needs of enthusiasts. As the new small form factor chassis addition to the Fortress series, the FT03-MINI is truly a paradigm.

5 out of 5 eggsVey nice

Pros: Slick looking, good overall quality

Cons: 1- No DVD/BD slot (read"Other")
2- A bit hard to assemble all the components, but that's normal considering its size and shape. It's not a real "con" just saying for those who find this hard like if it wasn't normal... Design your build and verify if this chassis would accommodate your components before acquiring, that's all.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy it since this was a gift. On a general note... What leaves me perplexed regarding the new breeds of these so-called "media center HTPC" case since a couple of years, is that most of them which are good looking for the living room don't have a DVD/BD slot ! Like if nobody was watching DVD or BD movies, and I find this ridiculous market-wise. It's like if they were not designing for the user's needs, but instead for the streaming industry interests (else it's not understandable)... Anyways, overall a great looking case (I like it simple).

4 out of 5 eggsShes a looker

Pros: -small footprint
-easy to remove panels
-vertical cooling path
-simple cooling with filter
-looks lovely

Cons: -very difficult to find correct DVD drive. most options are wildly expensive. When I ordered this case Newegg didn't even have a compatible drive. If you manage to find a drive.... you will still need an unusual cable to power it.
-cable management is difficult, especially if you install the disc drive.
-current options for PSU are very limited- Silverstone only and they are NOISY.
-the stock fan is too loud and not PWM. I hacked the fan cable to run at a lower speed.
-panel clips can be broken if not used correctly. I broke one and ended up printing a replacement with a 3d printer. The design is on

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Case with some Compromises

Pros: -Looks beautiful on desk
-High quality aluminum sides
-High quality fan comes with it
-I kind of like the I/O on top of case as opposed to back
-CPU water cooling works great

Cons: -The sides come off too easy, wish they would secure better
-BARELY fit my 660 ti, should have an extra inch of card clearance
-My GPU gets upward of 70-80 celcius, but taking the front panel cools card at least 15 degrees
-Virtually no cable management
-No room for disc reader with all my parts in

Other Thoughts: Overall I love this case and it functions well for my mini gaming computer! There will always be the obvious problems when building a computer with a small case, and I think this case serves its function very well. I would totally buy the case again if they released a 2nd version with better secured sides, more card clearance, and just a little bit more room.

3 out of 5 eggsSide panels came warped

Pros: Great Quality, really. Nice and thick side panels dampen noise. small formfactor.

Cons: My side panels came in warped, and do not sit flush on the back side..... really frustrating considering the price.

Other Thoughts: Just ordered a Caselabs s3 today as a replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Design

Pros: -Easy to remove side panels (no screws!)
-Smart airflow design
-Useful installation guide
-Works great with liquid cooling
-Everything feels high quality

Cons: -Challenging to assemble. I had to go back and rearrange cables/pull out components to get things to fit
-Not the smallest possible case
-DOES NOT FIT CORSAIR H80i WATER COOLER but fits H55 without issue
-Best to use Silverstone SFX PSU

Other Thoughts: This is my second itx build and it came together beautifully. The cable management and cooling was excellent with this case. The brackets holding the slim dvd/hdd/ssd have space that is perfect for containing extra cabling or threading cables through to the other side of the case. The only issue I ran into was the water cooler being too large (DVD bracket did not fit on top of the cooler).

I like to maximize internal airflow and do not require much storage so I opted for a single SSD, which allowed me to remove a large hdd bracket.

Intel 4770k
Corsair Vengeance 16GB
Corsair H55 liquid cooler
Silverstone ST45SF 450w PSU
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
SIlverstone slim Blu-Ray writer

The GPU states a min PSU requirement of 500W but gaming has been fine so far with the 450W.

I applied a small amount of Arctic Silver, rubbed it in, wiped off with a coffee filter, and applied the H55 with stock grease. Running Prime95 for about 45 min had temps around 67C, with one anomalous spike to 74C. Moderate browsing has temp avg in the low 30's.

Overall very happy with this case and would recommend it to a friend.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Quality And Build

Pros: Thick aluminum panels very sturdy, easily removable panels for upgrading components, plenty of room to work in, look is unique.

Cons: The ap vortex type fan from silverstone is quite loud at 1500 rpm. The reset button on top is near the power button, which should of been recessed to prevent accidental reset. The clips holding the panels are a tad too loose doesn't take much effort to pull panels off.

Other Thoughts: wished the silverstone logo was illuminated with el lighting.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case if you follow the Instructions

Pros: Very efficient design for handling heat dissipation. Side panels solid and included fan quiet.

Cons: Not really a con but be sure to follow the instructions when installing components as there is a specific order to follow.

Other Thoughts: Installing a EVGA 670 FTW took a little bending of the case to get it in initially but this was an oversite of mine as the Silverstone manual clearly states a max video card length of 9.8" and the 670 FTW is 10". A quick bend back and it would be very difficult to tell it was bent at all.

3 out of 5 eggsPlanning on using this case with an optical, or 3.5" drive? Read below...

Pros: So once upon a time, finding handheld instrumentation a bit lacking I found myself wanting to have a garage computer to throw on a cart, with a couple 24"s and some speakers to diagnose vehicles Im working on, flip on some tunes, some videos, doing some packet injection against neighborhood AP's, whatever a guy in a position of having a pimpd out garage could find himself doing with a garage computer...

Soo Yea, Nice looking case -Looks & Works well in your garage, or your office

Cons: Size (Not necessarily saying this is some huge caveat or anything, but when I got it -I was of the opinion that its ~30% bigger than what the pics n' videos allude to in height)

The other thing here is powersupplies...

In the description, they make a point of illustrating CPU heatsync as a critical dimension, power supplies also fall into this category if you have the expectation of being able to use this case with either a 3.5" hard drive and/or an optical drive -If you find yourself falling into this category, use a powersupply with a depth of 100mm or less (I had first ordered a seasonic PS for purposes of using with this case, and found it to be too long -Ive since replaced it with a Silverstone PS & this now works as expected, Yes I took an egg off for disclosing the CPU cooler dimensions, and NOT PS dimensions)

Other Thoughts: Not a big thing, but ALL cables use the top plastic grill as a entrance facility -Woulda been nice to have a knockout (or a 2nd back panel with a hole in it?) to run cables out of the back as opposed to the top

4 out of 5 eggsUnique

Pros: Strong, solid, well built. Easy to work on considering how compact it is. The giant fan is audible but low enough that you don't usually notice it.

Cons: Even Silverstone's own modular PSU doesn't fit in the case without taking the 3.5" drive bracket out and bending a few things.

Other Thoughts: Maybe go with a DC PSU, if you can. It might be small enough to fit properly.

5 out of 5 eggsMy new form factor

Pros: Very durable, heavier than most cases of this form factor but just made well. It looks sleek and puts me in a good mood every time I stare at it. Fits all the hardware I chose for it and was rather easy to put together.

Cons: I wish the reset button wouldn't protrude and would have designed something a bit more recessed, I can confuse the power button for the reset. Not a big deal though.
I bought a 350 Seasonic SFX power supply, and it fits in the case, but I had to remove the hard drive bay and couldn't mount my second drive to the bay, so it's just lying/hanging inside the case next to a bunch of cables. I probably should have bought the Silverstone SFX power supply that is modular. I will probably buy one soon to manage my cables a little better. Nonetheless my system works fine and I would recommend the Silverstone SFX Modular PSU. Great Case!
