PT12B Mini ITX Home Theater PC Case

The SilverStone PT12 is a super slim case designed specifically for Intel's Thin Mini-ITX form factor. At only 2" H x 16 3/16" D x 10 1/4" D (52mm H x 410mm W x 261mm D), it is small enough to enable any builder to create a custom all-in-one computer system. Built with brushed aluminum front panel for great looks, the PT12 has ample space for a thin, Mini-ITX motherboard with compatible cooler, a 2.5" drive, and a slim optical drive. For mounting to most monitors, the PT12 is also VESA complaint, making it easy to integrate it into any computing environment.

2 out of 5 eggsNot for me

Pros: +VESA mount
+Would make an OK (but not great) case for mounting on the back of an AIO display?

Cons: -It's ugly. Poor design with big screws on the front panel.
-Doesn't make a good HTPC case.

Other Thoughts: I ordered this case before looking close enough to the pictures. The pan-head screws on the front panel just don't look good. This case definitely doesn't belong in a home theater setup, unless you're going for the industrial look.

I suppose it might work OK for mounting on the back of an AIO display panel, but it's just not for HTPC use.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid HTPC foundation

Pros: This is a solid case for an HTPC build that is sleek and low profile. Like the other reviewer said, it's one of the easiest builds to just drop components in and go - with the exception of maybe stiffer cables such as SATA connectors; the height not lending itself to the most robust bend radii for cables. Right angle connectors are your friend.
Sleek appearance
The option for an optical drive give it the edge over its competitor (PC-Q05B).

Cons: Cannot fit a 3.5" drive in this case without a modification of the optical bay bracket. I took some sheers and clipped out a .4" square out of the bracket to fit a 3.5" drive into the case - it's not possible otherwise. If it were longer you could also fit in an optical drive, but this modification makes it impossible.
Hey that sweet 2.5" drive bracket? Make that a double decker so you can fit two 2.5" drives in. The height of the case would permit this.
Decent ventilation for a case this size.

Other Thoughts: Easy case to work with, just wish it was longer so I could fit everything I want into it. That low profile intel heatsink (Intel HTS1155LP) takes up a ton of real estate and makes packaging more difficult I imagine. Shorter rubber feet would be cool too - especially for those not using the included VESA mount. Overall a solid case, should be priced cheaper (~$60) given the amount of material and the easy sheetmetal bends and fabrication. I can understand why it's not though - it caters to crowd where it will see smaller production volumes.
Build components:
ECS H61H2-TI (this motheboard fits!)
Intel HTS1155LP CPU cooler (thanks to other newegg users who posted this cooler in their reviews)
Core i3-3220 (perhaps overkill)
Dell LA65NS0-00 19.5V adapter from an old laptop
Team Xtreme 2x4gb ddr3 so-dimm kit
Seagate 1.5TB green drive (3.5" drive)

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome case and so well thought out!

Pros: This case is awesome. Made specifically for the Intel DQ77KB and similar board with matching low-profile cooler (this is not optional).

For details, see my review at A* where I bought the case.

I have built 100+ desktop, server and HTPC systems over 25 years, and I can say that this is the nicest build I have been involved with (15-minute fool-proof assembly). Everything is so well thought out and I could not be more impressed.

Room for 2.5" drive and perhaps a 3.5" if you tried. I reality, store your media on a server, use 1 to 2 gbit Ethernet and use a small 64/128G SSD. I use a 128G mSATA on the Intel board. An HTPC that uses more than that, just might not be an HTPC.

Classy looking.

Cons: I have found none. If I had to change one thing it would be to have a dimmer LED. I may sand the face on mine to diffuse the light. While subjective, I think that the very-bright LED's are distracting. It would take a bit of effort change this is the design (special LED attention), but I think it would give the case a classier look. Simple to fix by the user.

Other Thoughts: USe the Intel MB, with 16GB of latop ram (SODIMM) and an i3, i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge and you have a very nice HTPC.

I wish it had a USB3 port on the front, but, this is subjective and many would disagree - a less-busy does look nicer.

I can't think of many improvements that could be made other than some possible air-duct suggestions in case you decide to use a 3770+ CPU - gets hot during encoding (as one would expect).

Not planning to use the slim ODD bay, optical media is dead. I wish more slim ODD-bay options existed. A 2.5" removable bay does exist from one vendor, but again, this makes it busy on the front, so all quite subjective.

The reviewer who had an issue with the power supply is not paying attention. You have 1000's to choose from - think "laptop", 20 bucks. Could not be simpler.

I have now built two of these and encouraged a few others to do the same. I have not heard even one complaint.

Silverstone gets more of my attention after this good experience. Kudos to the designers.

2 out of 5 eggsIncomplete

Pros: Form factor is good for living room HTPC

Cons: It's hard for consumer to find power supply to fit this form factor. Also the Intel H61 board is little popular unless one searches for it.
It's better if manufacturer includes all two components and charges a package price as bare bone.
That said, there some bare bone made for Intel H61 for pretty much the same price here.

Manufacturer Response:

The PT12 was designed specifically for "Thin Mini-ITX" motherboards so it has no internal space for power supply. Thin Mini-ITX motherboards such as Intel's DH61AG and DQ77KB already have onboard DC power supply so you only need to get 19V external AC adapter to power them.
