4 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC Case, questionable quality

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Looks incredible, and really this is an important quality in a HTPC case
Surprising cable management ability
Fits a ATX PSU
Front panel USB 3.0
Reasonable price (though the bigger cases are cheaper?)

Cons: One front panel USB 3.0 cable harness came damaged, inserting a USB drive pushes the port out, which looks pretty ugly. Not enough to send the case back, but it is pretty disappointing.
Inside the case, some of the parts and painting look a little hasty. The drive cage, for instance, has some machining marks that look like could run up against some drives given some unlucky mounting.
There also is no motherboard layout map that is so common in tower cases.

Other Thoughts: All in all, a great HTPC case, definitely just make sure to really check it over before you start building. The instructions, also, are useless.

3 out of 5 eggsCase screw holes don't line up well

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Attractive looking, Sturdy, Scratch resistant

Cons: The holes for the case screws don't line up well. If you open you computer up often, this isn't the case for you.
It seems like silverstone could have had made room for a couple more internal drives - there is empty space in the front that isn't used.

Other Thoughts: I expect better of a premium manufacturer like Silverstone.

5 out of 5 eggsNice case at a fair price

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Nice design
Not too heavy
Really nice instructions
Overall quality
LED dimmer slider switch

Cons: No place to attach wireless dongles for keyboard/mouse/controllers etc on the front of the machine without having to flip down the front face
Flipping up the front face while a USB device is plugged in would be an easy mistake and would also most likely destroy the USB device as well as the USB port inside the front flip cover

Other Thoughts: I knew that this case had nowhere to put the wireless receiver dongle on the front of the machine, so I am okay with that though some may want to really consider that fact. You cannot hook any device to the front while the cover is up. The case is really well built and I am quite happy, but I do wish that there were some USB ports on the side or maybe behind the cover but recessed so that I could plug in my keyboard/mouse/controller wireless receivers without having to leave the front cover down or run a USB extension out from around the back.

5 out of 5 eggsSilverStone ML04B

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Very nice lower cost media center case! It has a very simple and clean look that blends nicely with other electronics. The front panel even allows the power and hard drive lights to be muted so you don't have bright lights shining at you all the time. Despite its small size, it has plenty of room for larger micro-ATX motherboards and low profile cards, and can fit a full sized power supply (so long as you stay within limits!), and leaving out the DVD or Blu-ray drive, it can fit up to 5 hard drives. I have 4 Enermax Marathon 80mm fans on the side running at 5V, and the case stays extremely cool while remaining very quiet.

Cons: USB 3.0 ports on the front are useless without a motherboard that supports them (as of this writing, inexpensive micro-ATX motherboards rarely have this feature), so it would have been nice if optional USB 2.0 connectors were included. Hard drive screws are too short for the plastic holder in front of the motherboard, so I had to use my own to mount the hard drive in that location. Also, the extra air filter doesn't fit inside the top vent unless you remove the internal support brace.

Other Thoughts: Very happy with this case! Some may complain that the metal is "flimsy", but I don't make a habit of punching and kicking my computer.

3 out of 5 eggsGood case....with flaws

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Small. Sturdy. High quality. Takes a standard ATX psu.

Cons: With a standard ATX psu and an optical drive both installed, the cabling is VERY tight. There's maybe 1 inch between the psu and back of the optical drive...maybe.... Knowing this...get a modular PSU if at all possible. I got away with a non-modular...but the cable situation is a nightmare.

The 3.5" and 2.5" drive mountings are awkward at best. No other way to describe it. It works, but leaves you thinking "w t f?!"
No IR port, or anyplace to even mount one. This is marketed as an "HTPC" case...yet no IR port...what genius is behind this? This seems to be a trend with nearly ALL of these "HTPC" cases....They look great...and look like they belong near your tv...but who the hell wants to break out a clunky keyboard/mouse when ideally it can and should be operated with a remote?????

Other Thoughts: The case is small, and very sturdy....and a chromed cross-brace adds to that already sturdy feeling.

If you don't mind being creative with mounting an IR port for the remote control, and the goofy a**ed drive mounting situation...I would recommend this case.

4 out of 5 eggsNice quality all Metal Case Perfect for HTPC!

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: 1.) Metal Construction for Quality
2.) Enough room inside for all my hardware and a regular size power supply.
3.) Nice Front Door which gives it a quality finish and helps keep the dust out.
4.) Room for 2 Hard Drives
5.) Includes Magnetic Dust Filters for the Fans
6.) Has a cross brace for a sturdier build
7.) Front door is magnetic
8.) Expandable with Low Profile Cards
9.) Nice LEd light on the front and not too bright with the door closed
10.) Has a lock on the front door for added security

Cons: 1.) Must use a Low Profile CPU Fan
2.) Magnet on front door is not too strong
3.) If you are using a regular size power supply just make sure that your DVD ROM Drive or Blue Ray Drive is not too long as it may hit the power supply.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a really nice case for the price. Mostly all metal case and not the cheap plastic stuff. Room for upgrades and fits a Micro-ATX Motherboard with ease. The front door really adds a nice look. Looks Great in the Entertainment Center.

4 out of 5 eggsNice little case

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Very sturdy, Nice clean looking aluminum front face, locking mechanism on front with a key, Great size for blending in with your other home theater components.

Cons: The stated options for 3.5 and 2.5 drives I guess are correct but If you put an optical drive in the cage on top(only place it can go) and a 3.5 inch HDD on the bottom of the cage your left with just 1 other spot to either put another 3.5 or 2.5. on a platform near the main power connection on the motherboard(that was a little difficult to deal with even though I used an SSD there(very tight), I can't imagine placing a full sized HDD there.
The space between the optical drive and the power supply is like one inch at the top even though I used a smaller PSU. There is some space under the optical drive up against the HDD to stuff unused power supply cables.
Not crazy about the white lettering on the front of the case "Silverstone"

Other Thoughts: I built this HTPC for my brother and Although I listed a number of cons for the case I realize that you have to make sacrifices when going with the smaller form factor.
I just wanted to alert potential buyers to it's limitations.
I have a larger Silverstone case and It has alot more space but it verily fits into my Tv cabinet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case! Don't use ATX supply tho

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: This case is clean and perfect for a media server PC. Quite honestly, I might buy another to use as a desktop PC and put my monitor right on top.

It includes excess screws to use and fasteners. Be aware though that the front USB internal plug is USB3 and you'll need an adapter to use it with a MB with only USB 2 pin sockets. Also, even though it says a standard full size ATX power supply will fit, IT WILL NOT, especially if you are using an optical drive. There is literally no space between a full ATX supply and optical drive... they are butted up against each other, or would be, if the wires weren't coming out the back of the supply.

Cons: No cons, but DO NOT USE A FULL SIZED ATX SUPPLY even though the specs say it will fit! IT WILL NOT!

Be aware though that the front USB internal plug is USB3 and you'll need an adapter to use it with a MB with only USB 2 pin sockets.

4 out of 5 eggsNice, Compact HTPC Case

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Fits in a tiny cubby in my Ikea entertainment center. It doesn't draw attention to itself, or even look like a PC with the front cover closed. Build quality is pretty decent for the price. It's small for a MicroATX case. The super slim cases like this are often Mini-ITX only.

Cons: Having both a normal sized power supply and an optical drive in this thing at the same time is a very tight fit as the optical drive backs up onto the power supply. It also won't take full sized PCI/PCIE cards, but something had to give for the case to be as slim as it is. Onboard video is so good now, you probably don't need a discrete video card for an HTPC these days anyway. Pick your CPU cooler carefully. Many will be too tall. I'm using a Cooler Master GeminII M4, which just barely fits under the support bar that goes diagonally across the top of the case.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm pretty happy with it. It seems like a good value for the price.

HTPC Specs: AMD A6-3650 APU, 8GB Kingston HyperX DDR3-1333, ASUS F1A75-M PRO, 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD, PC Power and Cooling 400W Modular

5 out of 5 eggsawesome slim form factor

This review is from: SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: fits my large 630 watt 80 plus certified psu, and only a little bit snug with my asus blu ray burner. has a slot for a solid state disk.

Cons: a little cramped but that's to be expected with something this small. I felt like they definitely could have fit a second 3.5" bay stacked underneath the current one or something... but my 3tb standalone is plenty for now. grabbed an external portable 2tb so I can bring stuff to friends houses.

Other Thoughts: fits my axp-200 thermalright cpu cooler without the metal bar that fits across the top in there, intaking air because it is so close to the top vent. it would not fit a larger fan with this heatsink because it comes with a slim 140mm. only using one 80mm fan on the side is enough. you have space for 4 but I wouldn't recommend it because it'll get a little noisy and also I would've had trouble fitting them in there.
