The D-3Front/50 3U server case from iStarUSA proves that rack mount server cases don't have to be boring looking to function well. The 3U form factor lets the case accept 12"x10" ATX motherboards. That means there is room inside for 7 full height expansion cards, so you have a wider variety of options.

They didn't skimp on drive space either with two 5.25" and one 3.5" external bays and five 3.5" internal bays. This gives you plenty of room to build an internal RAID solution. The 500W PSU delivers plenty of power for whatever you load in.

The front panel has LED indicators for an indication of system status at a glance. There are also 2 USB ports for quick connections of external devices. In between the LEDs and the USB ports is a keyed lock to prevent unauthorized users from opening the drive bay doors. The doors hold washable air filters.

1 out of 5 eggsOk Case Bad Power Supply

Pros: The overall construction of the case isn't too bad.

Cons: The case looks cheap, the buttons feel cheap, and the power supply only has 2 sata connectors on it. My case also arrived with a defective power supply.

Other Thoughts: I've used antec cases for years and I've always been happy with them. I wish I would have spent a little more to get a better procuct.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad case for the cost

Pros: Perfect case for somone looking to put in a lightweight lightweight server. The 3U size is perfect in my rack for the home automation / CCTV server. Plenty of room inside and solidly built case.

Cons: Ordered the rack kit but for the life of me couldn't get it to work, gave up and use a shelf for it.
Power supply died after 1.5 years which seems short to me. Put in replacement but powersupply power connector is reversed, so had to squeeze the replacement in.
Adding new drives can be a pain as you have to take a lot of it a part to get to where you need; don't drop a screw or your in for some time digging it out.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, Roomy Server Case

Pros: This is an innovative design from a company that I have liked for many years. If you need a good case on the cheap for a rackmount server, go no farther than I-StarUSA.

Cons: None that I can think of at this time.

Other Thoughts: I have dealt with their tech support in the past and they are great as well.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome case! LOUD fans!

Pros: Great case, has all the modern power connections you will need. Plenty of power, great internal layout scheam allows mand drives, and efficient cooling, while making wiring neat and easy. Shallow-ish depth, which is hard to find in rackmount cases.

Cons: My only gripe with the case is the included fans. They are LOUD!! Buy the quiet version of this case, or plan on replacing the fans (which is cheap anyway).
Also, the locking latch on the front falls, with gravity, to the "latched" position on it own often. Great, if you entend to keep it locked, I guess. No mobo connector for older motherboards, but I was able to make it work buy cutting a few rows of the molex connector off with heavy duty scissors. An included adaptor for this would have been nice. No firewire port on front.

Other Thoughts: optional rubber feet for the bottom would be nice, only a few pennies and would have saved my wood floor a scratch or two.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, will probably buy more of them

Pros: Feels *solid* and is just about all metal. So far it's very quiet, though motherboard only had connection for one external case fan so I'm only running the one for now. Doors in front are made of metal and not flimsy plastic. Handles on front feel well connected. It also comes with plenty of screws and even zipties.

Cons: Had to take out a dozen screws to get to the center 3.5" drive location since once motherboard is in, you can't really slide them out. Cost is a bit high as well, especially when you add in shipping. Didn't come with instructions, and I have a random set of wires that are really short in the front that I have no idea what they connect to...

Other Thoughts: Having a rack in the basement with several Dell servers, I didn't want anything that looked cheesey. Not only does it look good, but it's built solid and is mostly metal; even the front doors. I'll probably be replacing some of my other tower cases with these to rack them. If it wasn't for all the unscrewing to get to some parts, I would have given it a 5.

4 out of 5 eggsgood case - defective power supply

Pros: an interesting 3u case with the PSU located in the front - sturdy and well made like all iStar cases seem to be

Cons: cross support bar is awkward - psu in front eliminates drive bay space but rear spacer (where psu normally would be) allows additional internal storage

Other Thoughts: included PSU (580W istar TC-580PD3) was defective - NEWEGG claims they are a reseller and would NOT exchange just the PSU (rack is fine and running nice with another PSU) - I find this odd as I'm a long time customer and their cost to eat the PSU versus the cost of having me being unhappy and posting things like this review seems not to make much business sense. This is not a criticism but an observation.
