3 out of 5 eggsGood! - but mixed feelings

Pros: - strong heavy steel case.
- lot's of room inside.
- supports 2 5.25 external bays (for an additional drive cage)
- Unintended serious cooling support. The ventilation grill on the top part of the case is perfect for mounting 2x140mm fans with 1x120mm fan or some other config. If you use the rubber screwless fan mounts, it works beautifully.
- case is so easy to open!

Cons: - Very un-intuitive cooling design.
- PSU is sort of suspended inside one of the front halfs of the case with exhaust pointed out of the front through an air filter. With the design, a lot of air is intended to flow to the back out of the case from the front. Seems more like I'm pulling that heat back through the case - what is the point of the PSU exhaust point?
- Because of the grill on the top the the case, no cooling (beyond open air cooling) was occurring inside the case even with the back fans. To create optimal fan cooling you need to be able to create airflow through the entire case. With the out of box config, most air drawn in by the fans get blown right out without interaction with any other part of the case. In fact, I believe it's crucial you mount at least 2 140mm fans on the top of the case grill to exhaust out of the case. This forces air in from the front and forces hot air around MOBO parts to be expelled.
- Fan control - Seriously?!? we need to spend extra money for an overpriced circuit board that does nothing except provide an indicator that all your fans are working (NO FAN CONTROL), just to have a fully functional front panel interface. When you buy this case you are buying an incomplete piece.

Other Thoughts: -Lockable doors with keys are nice, but utterly unnecessary. I can't imagine someone trying to steal by hard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsNice chassis

Pros: Chassis as advertised. Quality of workmanship is excellent. 3U chassis with multiple drive mounting points. Designed for "small" ATX power supply but has room for full size (assuming one is not above using Velcro to mount it :-) ). Easy chassis for all to work with.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsStrange Design

Pros: I purchased this for a customer who wanted to have a rack mount instead of desktop case. It solved the issue.

Cons: The PSU is strange. Need a modular power supply to keep the wire demons at bay. The istar recomended PSU will work but it is a pain in the a..

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: inexpensive, it is steel.

Cons: Air flow is poor, very small case fans. Would not trust it with the newer CPU's. Case is not deep enough to use any after market CPU cooler I could find. Not even a water cooler; fan on those are too big, no place to mount it. Most cases have spots for several additional fans, this has one small spot, right next to the provided small one. So cross ventilation is almost non existent; any fan through put would come from the power supply which has a door with a filter in front of it. Or it would get pulled from the side of the case (no fan), but if you mounted it in a rack that side would be next to another server, which would mean hot air not cool.

No documentation what so ever so where the power supply is situated is hard to figure out. The power supply recommended by the manufacturer is not sold by New egg.

The cage for the hard drives (in the back with again no doco and poor ventilation) is a pain to install: you have to unscrew from the outside of the case. There are so many cases out there with much better/easy designs why struggle with this?

Other Thoughts: Bought this as a "combo" item with the MB, so it was discounted. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to try to make the case work so I bought a different case. Because it was a combo it would probably cost me more to return it. So now it sits unused.

3 out of 5 eggsStrange Airflow

Pros: Strong steel construction
Will fit any ATX or Micro ATX
Will fit any standard ATX PSU
Has a 3.5" external bay
Relatively low profile without having to use low profile parts

Good case overall. Only 3U but will take most full size parts. Case is good for servers but is also good for other uses as well such as mid-level gaming case, or workstation. In my case, I am running a firewall.

Cons: Front mounted PSU configuration is tricky. The power cord is configured in such a way that it is nearly pinched. Almost pulled out my Dremel tool to cut a hole in the middle support to give it some more room. If your PSU has it's power receptacle on the right side, you may have some issues plugging it in.

Air flow is also an issue. The PSU will blow hot air out the front while nearly all the cool air coming into the case come in from the top. This prevents tunneling airflow from the front and makes the air filters on the front completely useless as no air comes in from that direction. While not really an issue for my firewall as the system really does not get very hot, this could be a significant issue for work stations which may have components that need that "tunneling airflow" to keep cool enough to function properly.

Other Thoughts: This is a good case overall but it does have some issues that iStar should correct. Airflow being a significant one. This could be fixed isolating the PSU bay as far as air flow. This could be done by making the case deeper, say adding 2 inches to its depth, then adding a couple of adjustable walls. Also, fix the power cord issue to prevent the could from being pinched.

Strongly recommend a modular PSU for this case. If you don't have one, then it will take some doing to make all the cables fit without pinching them off. A modular PSU will allow you to leave out cables you don't really need. This will save you a lot of space and time.

This case is best suited for the following:
basic computing needs (Micro ATX board will work well)
Mid-level workstation or mid level gaming
DNS server applications
Domain server applications
Hardware firewall applications (like SmoothWall)

Case is not suitable for the following:
High end computing with large/over sized GPUs
Boards with tower style coolers (bigger than 115mm tall)
Exchange server applications
File server applications (strongly recommend 4U or bigger)

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality control

Pros: I like the case price. Style is not too bad.

Cons: The power cable running from the back of the case to the power supply was installed improperly resulting in destroying two power cables, a $125 UPS, and a $35 breaker in my house. I have two other iStar cases that did not have this problem. This is a MAJOR oversite and could have really hurt someone.

Other Thoughts: While a good product, this malfunction was just outright dangerous

5 out of 5 eggsgood cheap case

Pros: Cheap, ATX, Holds everything I needed it to. Fit my mother board and hard drives without issue.

Cons: One of the expansion covers was missing with packaging... but I had extra.

Other Thoughts: love the lockable front part of that case. Be extra careful when buying a power supply for this case and make sure it fits. I had to open my power supply up and switch the direction of the fans.

4 out of 5 eggspretty good

Pros: pretty good, it's my own fault for not realizing this was too deep for a communications cabinet - i figured a diy case wouldn't be the same as a full depth server, but hey, whatevs. I will say that this is not quite as nice as the other case that's shallower, in terms of steel vs plastic handles etc.

Cons: none really, other than I should think or learn to read.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this case, just right for a shallow rack

Pros: love it, my CPU was running at 53 degrees C in my old beige case, it is now running at 39 degrees C in this thing. It is also shallow enough to fit in a communications cabinet. It fit my ATXm board fine. It would accomodate a wider ATX board, but don't plan on using all of the 5.25" slots. Actually, don't plan on using the bottom two 3.5" bays either

Cons: none really

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

Pros: Lots of room for drives, expansion cards, and fits most motherboards. Built well. Has good ventilation. Rackmounts without needing to use railslides. Easy to figure out how to install components. Only took about 30 minutes from unbox to power up.

Cons: Just make sure the power supply you use fits correctly and you shouldn't have any problems. Fans can be a bit loud but if it's installed in a computer room, it's not a factor anyway.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these and will buy more in the future.
