4 out of 5 eggsRackmount

Pros: Lots of places to add fans, cooling. Room for mobo.

Cons: Adding/Removing from the 5.25" bays requires complete disassembly of the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsGood case for good price

Pros: There is really nothing about this server case that isn't good. It's a 4U case for $99. I have this case holding (2) 3 to 5 bay converters and mounted 2 mirrored hard drives for the OS under the cages for a total of 12 hard drives.

This case has a top bar that will house 3 fans promoting solid air flow inside of the chassis as well. I removed this bar due to the 3 to 5 bay converters having fans on the rear of the converter boxes.

We are using this at home for a NAS box, in a RAID 5 configuration. It's got plenty of room for future expansion all while running a 6 core 3.8Ghz AMD processor and 16GB of ram.

If you put two cages in to convert the 3 bays into 5 3.5" bays, you will loose the option to have a ROM/ RW drive installed. Once the OS (WHS 2001) was installed, I removed the ROM drive and installed the secondary converter cage.

This can also be rack mountable if you were to purchase a rail kit.

All said, I'm planning on purchasing 2 more of these and putting them all in a LAKRACK

Cons: None that I can see

4 out of 5 eggsmounting

Pros: did everything what I want it to.

Cons: only 1 I had. for some reason the mounting brackets outside the case are too big for my cabinet, anyone else have this problem? they just screw off and I can grind the ends.

Other Thoughts: none

4 out of 5 eggsGood case, some flaws

Pros: Overall solid construction, 4 U case with a good amount of room in it.

Fits a number of different board form factors.

Standard ATX PSU

Plenty of extra screws and assorted pieces included

Not as deep as some other 4U cases I have seen, which equates to not being quite as heavy, which is nice.. still plenty of room though.

Not a massive 24 bay storage machine like my norco 4224, but for a multipurpose tower system that i wanted to throw into a rack that can hold 2 dvd burners, a fan controller, and a 3 to 4 5.25 converter this fits the bill perfectly, and for an excellent price.

Cons: Minor:

The way the 5.25 brackets work is inconvenient... wouldn't take off points for it, but it's annoying to have to take the whole stack out should you need to switch anything (like the 3.5 mount at the very bottom).

Gaps around 5.25 bay components range from reasonable to quite large depending on the specific component... again not a huge deal, but worth noting there can be a bit of a gap.

The power led wires had to be reversed on mine to work properly... and it's not the board because i've had it in other cases without that problem.

A number of the edges are quite sharp... nothing major if you approach it carefully, but if you are trying to fit wires in while not having to take the whole thing apart and move everything, it's easy to scrape your hands up... easier than some other cases.

I had to file down very slightly, some of the edges on the front fold-out door in order to get it to stop scraping/squeaking when opened and closed.

Airflow could be better, there are a number of dead zones where airflow just isn't there.
I mounted 1 3.5 drive below some dvd burners on one side, and the drive was overheating after light usage and dropping out. Moving it elsewhere resolved the issue, but I don't understand how you are supposed to get airflow to a smaller component wedged tightly beneath potentially longer components (even 5.25 bay converters overhanging would cause this issue) above that shield it even more from airflow.

The version of the case I got does not quite match the pictures here. The middle bar that holds the fans is different, and the fans have individual holder brackets instead of 1 3 fan bracket shown in the picture. I like the design i have better... however, I only got 2 of the 3 fan brackets... so i only have 2 80mm and 2 60mm fans (and 1 other 80mm on the back of a 3.5-5.25 converter)

Other Thoughts: Can not figure out what the extra bracket things are. They are slotted as if to fit in the middle bar, but their original intended purpose remains a bit of a mystery.

Seems like the front grill in the middle could be made just slightly wider to accommodate mounting another 80mm fan, which would be extremely useful.

Overall a great deal on the case wouldn't hesitate to buy another despite some of the cons i listed.

4 out of 5 eggsGood 4U case

Pros: Cheap good 4U case
Allows for a total of 12 drives for NAS application - with usage of 2 - 3 to 5 bay converters.
Has provisions for internal fan mounting.

Cons: None that come to mind.

2 out of 5 eggsTwo versions?

Pros: Sturdy case with good ventilation. I bought two of these cases for a NAS / Server and personal computer.

Cons: I bought two of these cases and they appear to be different versions. The first version is great but the second (I assume newer?) is another matter. The second one of these I received has one space for a hard drive on each side at the very bottom of the assembly but because of the stand offs on the base of the case they are not able to be mounted at all. Also, the assemblies are warped in such a way that you can only fasten the hard drive to the assembly with one screw. What this means is that if you want to put ANY hard drive in this case you have to use adapters. There are also only 8 slots in total on the new version where the old one had 10. So this massive case can hold a total of 6 drives because 2 of the 8 don't even work. I'm not even sure what to say about this other than this is a serious flaw that really needs to be fixed.

Other Thoughts: This is my third case from this manufacturer and two of the three are this model. The first one I received is great and works perfectly. The second one has some serious flaws as mentioned previously. I bought these cases for a home rack project I am building but I am really disappointed with this last case. I will just have to deal with it because the cost of shipping this thing anywhere for a refund combined with the shipping cost of another case of similar design just doesn't make sense. I will be telling people to stay clear of Istar cases unless they make this right because this is a glaringly obvious flaw and they still pushed it out to consumers. With all that said I am reasonably happy with my other two cases that I bought from Istar.

4 out of 5 eggsNice but a little over-engineered

Pros: light, solid (mostly) construction, includes all the screws and misc hardware a case should come with

Cons: overly complex hard drive mounting system (can not add or remove hard drives without completely removing the hard drive cage(s). the 3.5" cage is screw'ed inside (by 4 screws, 2 from top and 2 from inside the 5.25" cage) the 5.25" cage, which is held in by 6 screws (4 top, 2 from underneath)... overkill. Though, having everything inside the case being held together by 4 or more screws does leave a very sturdy case.

removed 1 egg for this reason alone, 2 if I was expecting to be swapping a lot of hard drives.

Other Thoughts: don't over-tighten screws as the case is mostly aluminum

could come with the 60mm rear fans

5 out of 5 eggsVery decent for the price

Pros: Bought this box to build a NAS/SAN box. Enough room to put two 5x sata/sas raid cages in the front using the external 5.25 drive bays. Very sturdy design, and rack mountable. Comes with some decent fans to help keep the air moving from the drives over the board (3x center mounted). Plenty of space to put everything in place, and really liked that you could take the hard drive cages apart.

Cons: Did not come with fans for the rear of the case, ended up having to buy a couple of 80MM case fans to help complete my build, or the heat builds up in the case and actually makes the case hot to the touch.

Other Thoughts: If you are going to build an entry/intermediate level nas/san, this box will work perfectly for you. Keep in mind, to will need to buy some fans for the back of the case or the heat will build up.
