2 out of 5 eggsCase Drive Caddys causing failures

Pros: Price and the hot swappable drive bays seemed to be handy on the outside.

Cons: The drive bays were inducing UDMA_CRC_ERROR's on the member disks smart attributes. Eventually, when put under any type of load, the disk will lose connectivity with the array and would be kicked from the array in a failed state.

At first this seemed to be a bad drive or SATA cable type issue, but after a couple RMA's with the drive manufacturer and using (nevermind these drives had about 1 year of use with no errors prior to this build) and swapping out the SATA cables, i tested the Drive Bays and sure enough this is the culprit.

Bypassing the drive bay with the suspect drives cures the issues.

This occured for both drive bays in this case. So i guess its possible both units were DOA, but that would be i had TERRIBLE luck i suppose.
