4 out of 5 eggsGood case if you can get it on sale

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: +Internal temperature reader.
+Room in the back for cable management.
+Has a side window so you can see the inside components.
+Comes with a blue LED fan.
+Three fans are included with the case.
+The PSU is located at the bottom.
+Good air flow.

Cons: -The USB 3.0 slots don’t connect to the motherboard. They are meant to run through the case to the back and hook into the USB slots on the motherboard. This is not mentioned in the description, and is very misleading. If you want it to hook directly into the motherboard and not go through you will have to buy a USB 3.0 Female to Female 20 Pin Adapter.
-Getting the rebate was a hastle. I gave them everything they asked for and they said I didn't have everything, so I had to call them and straighten everything out.
- Had issues getting the rebate. I sent them all the required documentation but the rebate was not approved. So I had to call their toll free number, and luckily everything got straightened out and the rebate was approved.
-In the back where your GPU comes out, those slots break away but they can't be put back on if you break the wrong one.
-The directions that come with the case are not the best.
-The rubber things that secure your HDD are not as secure as I would like, but they still work.
-Not really a tool less install.

Other Thoughts: Before you buy this case check to make sure that all your parts are going to fit. If your video card is over 290mm it may not fit. I have a GTX 760 Windforce and it just barely fit. Also not all CPU coolers will fit. I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and it almost touches the side window. I'm almost positive that some liquid coolers will not fit.

The temperature reader only reads in Celsius, which is not really a problem, but it may get some taking use to if you’re use to reading temperatures in Fahrenheit.

The LED fan that it comes with doesn't change color, again it's not really a problem, but if you want a different color than blue you're going to have to buy another fan.

This case also comes with a fan controller, and has holes in the back for liquid cooling. I don't use these features, and just plug my fans into the motherboard, so I can not comment on how well they work.

Lastly this is a decent case, but it's probably not worth full price, if you can get it on sale then go for it.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Case Poor USB 3.0 connection

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: The case is sturdy and comes with enough hardware and screws so that you can outfit it with your drives. It has liquid cooling holes. The Hard drive bays are easily accessible and drives are easy to swap because they can be removed by removing the side panel and the front panel can be left alone. It has a temp gauge on the front which looks nice.

Cons: What I disliked the most was the USB 3.0 front header. Instead of having a USB 3.0 that plugs into the motherboard it has cables that go from the front panel that need to be plugged into the motherboard ont he back. Hardware is included for this, but the USB 2.0 plugs into the motherboard header internally. This would fix the problem Main Board Motherboard 20 Pin Female to 2 USB A 3.0 Female Short Cable Adapter Converter Connector for PC Computer Installation Internal Cable Full Cover - allowing you to use the motherboard header this cable should be included with the case.

Other Thoughts: Big side window. Nvidia 960 was a tight squeeze

3 out of 5 eggsNice case for a first time builder - 1 front USB 3.0 port is dead

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: * Good Amount of Space
I installed an ATX board (gigabyte z97x-ud3h) and have plenty of room for a decent attempt at cable management. I have a Corsair 750w PSU and had enough room to squeeze in a fan on the bottom.

* 3 120mm fans included
There are two blue LED fans and a basic white one (molex powered). The instructions didn't make it obvious that the two 3-pin fans plugged into the two green/yellow cables that are on the backside of where the mobo goes.

I ended up moving the white fan to the bottom and replacing it with another blue LED fan. With 5 fans running (which is probably overkill), it's not the quietest box, but it doesn't bother me. I like a little white noise.

* Fan Controller, x2 USB 3.0, and x2 USB 2.0 front panel.
This is a nice front panel, though I've had an issue with the USB 3.0 ports, outside of it being pass-through, which I'll get into when I go over the cons.

* "Tool-Free HDD Installation
This was a total breeze. I did use a screwdriver to tighten the rubber things that hold the HDD in place, but i probably didn't need to. It's very easy to put in and remove.

The instructions showed putting the rubber grippers on in a way that would have had me plugging the SATA cable into the "back" of the case and that's not how I'm used to orientating my HDDs, but this was easy to adjust.

* Dedicated 2.5" SSD slot
I really loved this feature. The SSD is out of the way, it doesn't get too hot, and I didn't have to take up any room in the front. That's a win in my book.

* Bottom PSU slot
I've never been fond of putting my PSU in the top of the tower, even if it was secure. It's one of the heavier components and I like it sitting on the ground.

* Installing a DVD drive was a breeze. The bay cover was easy to bend and break off and the drive itself fit like a breeze. The screw holes were stubborn (yes, I used the right size and they wet right into the DVD drive outside of the case).

Cons: * Issue with one of the front USB 3.0 slots

The USB 3.0 are passthrough, which the product listing doesn't make obvious but two helpful YouTube videos did.
This would would normally require you running cables form USB 3.0 slots at the back and I wasn't having that.

I bought a Silverstone adapter that plugged into the header on my mobo and only one of the two USB 3.0 ports works. I'm OK with this because I have 4 more on mobo, but it sucks that one is shot right out of the gate. I docked an egg for that because the USB 3.0 is a big selling point.

* The case is flimsier than I'd like
The top mesh grate came dented. The case itself doesn't feel like it's well constructed, like something could bend too easily if you aren't somewhat careful.

*Some of the screw holes felt a little small
When I've installed optical drives and PSUs in the past, I never had issues with screws going right in, but I had to work to get some of the screws in. I've read reviews of people saying they've stripped the case, and I can see why.

Other Thoughts: For the price I paid ($33 before a rebate I need to actually take advantage of, I'm quite thrilled with the case at the moment, in spite of the cons.

As a first time builder from the ground up, it was an easy case to work with and, given the right price, I'd probably buy one again or at least consider another Zalman case.

The temp on the front panel is great and it gives me a ballpark of where my computer is at, which I love having. My other computer has it on the motherboard, but I prefer being able to glance over and see it on the front of my computer.

I'm not one to really give 5 star/egg reviews unless something just blows me away. I really want to give this 4 stars. I'd say that this is a solid 3-3.5 eggs, but I can't give it a because of the USB 3.0 issue.

It's not worth returning to the store I bought it at, it's just something I'll keep in mind. I mean, I do have 4 more on the back of the computer for external HDDs as needed, so I'm not hurting for them.

5 out of 5 eggsZalman ZM-Z9 U3

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: -Plenty of space for components (enough for future upgrades)
-Nice amount of airflow
-Bright blue LED fans
-Fan controller

Cons: The only con I have found so far is that it still uses pass-through cables for the front USB 3.0.

Other Thoughts: The mesh grill was slightly dented in when I received the case today, but not enough to be a problem or look bad.

My system:
Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
CPU: FX-8150
CPU cooler: Hyper TX3
Memory: 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600
GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 960 Super SC
PSU: Rosewill Green series 630Watt

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic case, but...

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Lots of space, comes with 3 fans and a temperature gauge. Solid quality.

Cons: Plastic was scratched. The front panel USB 3.0 ports are just a pass-through, they take the back panel ports instead of plugging directly into the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Only one hard drive mount, not a killer for me because of the SSD mount behind the motherboard. It is a great case, I only have minor complaints, nothing that really makes it a deal-breaker. Would buy again.

3 out of 5 eggsWould be decent if it cost less.

This review is from: ZALMAN ZM-Z9 U3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: -Good amount of space
-Fan controller
-Temperature probe
-Nice look (personal preference)

Cons: -The screw holes for the expansion slot become stripped
-External USB 3.0 connectors
-Only one front 120 mm fan space (the filter doesn't work because of the way the fan is mounted to the case)
-The cable holes do not have rubber grommets
-Front panel mic port pics up audio from the headphone port
-Back 120 mm fan is a molex pass-through connector(this is not a huge problem but should be addressed)

Other Thoughts: When I first bought this case I did not know to much about cases but for the price this case is not worth it. I built in a thirty dollar case that was better then this case (The other case was the Deepcool tesseract which is on Newegg). After using this case the screw for the expansion slot where I had a single slot card became stripped to the point where tape held the card better then the screw. The cooling design of this case makes it have negative airflow which means I had to put a filter on the top of my case to keep dust out.

There are many other case for less that will be better then this, so I would say to stay way from this case.
