5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Good quality. Everything is pretty solid. It's nice that they don't go cheap on the screws. I didn't cut my hands once setting it up as there were no sharp edges. There are 4 USB connectors on the front top part of the case, as well as the headphone and microphone jacks.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Nothing fancy. Just a solid case that is easy to set up and very functional.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Budget Mid-Tower

Pros: Build quality
Finish- matte, rough, black
Black interior
Simple, easy install

Cons: Few cable tie downs
Not much room behind motherboard tray

Other Thoughts: How they can manufacture and ship a case from China for less than $50 with this good of quality is amazing. The fit and finish are darn good. The corners they cut are few and not that significant. If you're trying to bring a build in on a tight budget. Here's your case.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case 4 $

Pros: I used this case for my first build (budget gaming build) and could not be happier. It has lots of space and many places for fans. There is plenty of cable management space to keep the inside looking nice. Also. ONLY 50$!!!

Cons: None, this case is amazing.

Other Thoughts: Front panel let some of the light from my intake fan (Green LED Fan) out the side through a small gap between the back side panel and the front face panel. Not a big problem but i fixed it because it bothered me.

5 out of 5 eggsBang for the Buck

Pros: Understated design, yet not boring. Lightweight, yet rigid. Construction quality is top-notch, plenty of space for large components, great cable management, plenty of expansion slots, places for 4-5 extra case fans, great airflow, I/O panel on top, PSU mounted on bottom, black fan and I/O cables to match case. Probably the best feature is the raised areas on the motherboard tray that allow you to forgo the normal standoffs, and the brass knob in the middle that will hold the mobo in place as you’re screwing it down. Genius.

Cons: Side panels are pretty thin, but not flimsy. Front 5.25” bay covers can pop out pretty easily, I wish they snapped in more securely. No dust filters, but at this price it’s hard to nitpick, considering all the higher-end features this case has.

Other Thoughts: Cable management helped greatly with my non-modular PSU, and there was an opening exactly wherever I needed one to route cables. GPU, CPU, and HDD temps stay below 40C at idle, and when I added a 120mm front intake fan, they dropped even lower. My machine stays silent, too – never exceeds a soft whoosh – even when the GPU ramps up to 60%.
In conclusion, I love this case, and I love Bitfenix. They’re a small company whose number one priority is builders’ needs.
Even this, their lowest-end case, comes with a ton of options and features that are often found in cases that cost twice as much or more.

4 out of 5 eggsBitFenix Merc Alpha ATX Mid Tower Case.

Pros: Neweggs service, price and delivery. With a few mods this case shines. Plenty of fan space, decent fastners, I like the thumb screws for the drives. Attractive and easy to see front panel. Thin made metal, but firms up after installing a few components. Served the purpose of bringing back to life a older system.

Cons: Could use some fan dust shields and zip tie hooks.

Other Thoughts: Put back together a older single core 3.2 GHz, with a very hot running AGP card. Dropped temps 20C with this case and a little work.
Front panel was blocked off at the bottom. Found some mesh panels w/filters in them to replace the upper drive panels. A small sheet of aluminum closed off the drive bay. The 2 front fans pull filtered air from the panels. Temps are in the low thirtys.
This case is a remake of the Compucase "Blitz". The frame, rear panel and bottom are the same. Compared these side to side. Side doors fit also. Have a old one hanging around, and pulled the PSU and fan filters for the bottom of this case. Assembly went well with no blips as others have had, and for a budget case it performs well.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic case

Pros: Bitfenix is a company that appears to have just come up out of nowhere, but shows promise of great quality. My first case purchase from them is the Merc Alpha, and I'm not disappointed at all. This is a very well laid out case, adding only the bare essentials and always where you need them. The motherboard tray is well laid out, marking form factor specific standoffs as necessary. There are also plenty of ways to hide your cabling inside this case, offering cabling holes in all of the popular locations.

While this case may lack some elegance internally, it's a striking reminder of how simple a case needs to be to look intimidating. The paint is high quality and appears to be able to stand up to a lot of abuse. The interior is well painted and organized with no quality issues or sharp points. The front panel is flat black, and even lacks any form of branding (Logo is an optional sticker). The Mercs were clearly built with the mentality that you can do what you want with your case.

Cons: In testing the many points in the case, I noticed that the construction quality is extremely high, but the durability of the steel itself is average. For the thinness of the case it holds up well to stress, just don't expect to hit it with a hammer without leaving a mark. This is primarily due to the fact that the case is very plain inside and there isn't much supporting the outer surfaces of the case.

One astounding thing that I've noticed about the Merc is that it's just heavy enough on the motherboard side of the case that if not watched carefully you could bump it and knock it over, especially when the case is resting on carpet. This could be attributed to both the narrowness of the case feet and the placement of them relative to the motherboard tray. Using wider case feet would alleviate this, and would allow for better air intake from below. The cable management options could also use a little more room as the space behind the motherboard tray is very tight.

Other Thoughts: This case is fantastic at entry level prices. I would suggest this or the Merc Beta to any first time or experienced system builder. Bitfenix cases appear to be aimed at builders looking for customizable cases, and that's exactly what I like. Not only do they ship their cases unbranded, but the simple construction and quality materials are an open arm invitation to case modders. The motherboard supports full ATX motherboards and full length video cards with exceptional airflow for such a simple design. The few drawbacks of the case are also extremely minor. The unbalanced weight of the case can be blamed on the lightweight materials, however it's only noticeable on non-stable surfaces (carpet). These cases and under normal operating conditions will never be an issue. Not only do I enjoy this case as it is, I would love to go out and purchase a few more from Bitfenix.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Budget Build

Pros: • Clean, simple design.
• 120mm fans (if i'm not mistaken). + support for 140mm?
• USB + Power + Reset all on top where they are easily accessible.

Cons: • Construction is not exactly top grade, but what were you expecting?
(ie when you remove the side panel, it takes a bit of effort to get it back into place)

Other Thoughts: Finally we have a decent looking budget case that isn't trying to be a "gamer" rig. The USB ports on top pretty much sold me, but I love the look of this case.
