3 out of 5 eggsCase used for my first build

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: This case, bar some problems listed below, is a good case, and has served me well for my first build. I bought it in December 2014.
- Very Practical and Heavy Duty. Looks great for being a simple design.
- Plenty of room inside the case for parts. I have more than enough room for a large GPU and after market cooling fan.
- The detachable Hard Drive stand can clear up a lot of room and remove some of the weight.
- The power button is nicely illuminated and is a soft but bright blue.
- Plenty of USB ports, and some of them are conveniently placed next to the power button, making it easy to plug something in and rest it on top of the case.
- The front cover helps to keep the case look simple, and is easily opened, while closing securely.

Cons: The only real con that sticks out to me is that the quick reset button is a little to easily pushed. It isn't a major problem, but it has happened once or twice.

Other Thoughts: Now, the main issue I had with ordering this case was that I received a case in not-so-good condition. The panel that you mount the Mobo to was dented, so one of the holes for the pegs was made useless. To add to this, another peg hole was threaded to small, and another was threaded to large. Lucky for me, they were all on one corner of where I needed to mount, so I jerry rigged that corner of my mobo with a zip tie, and it has held well so far.

So while I agree that the case is a great case, the issue with the warped back wall has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, especially for my first build.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Mid Tower

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: This case has lots of room for internal components. Plenty of space for disk drives. The hard drive trays fit SSDs as well. Cables can be hidden underneath the motherboard. The front filters and fan are easily accessible. Coming from an Antec p183, I find this case to be even more silent.

Cons: The power led doesnt work. I've tried connecting it to both the PWRLED and PLED pins on the motherboard to no avail. Sometimes I can't tell if my computer is on without the led indicator because this case is so quiet.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsDecent, but seriously consider the upgrade option

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: Lots of room, great cable routing features, and overall solid build quality.

Cons: Noticeably inferior when compared to newer generation of this case. Cheap plastic component required to mount front fans.

Other Thoughts: We've used the Define R5 for our last few workstation builds, but I ordered the R4 by accident and didn't have time to wait for an exchange. Assembly went fine, but at every step I found myself wishing we were working with an R5. The R5 feels like it's constructed of thicker steel than the R4, is dependent on fewer plastic parts, and virtually every aspect of the newer case is superior (quality/fit/finish). Unless you're really pinching pennies, spend a few extra bucks and get a Define R5.

5 out of 5 eggsEdit...Best Case I've Ever Owned

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

- Solid Design
- Heavy Duty Construction
- Perfect for Gamers
- Phenomenal Airflow
- Very quiet
- Noise Dampening Insulation
- Runs Remarkably Cool

- Removable Hard Drive Cages
- Alternative SSD Mounting
- Fan Filters
- 140mm Fans (up to 7 available mounting points)
- Excellent Cable Management
- Separately Packaged Screws
- No Sharp Edges

Cons: - No Side Fan Filter
- Front I/O USB Ports a Bit Tight at First but Loosened up Later
- Bottom 140mm Fan Opening May Not Be Accessible With Larger Power Supplies

Other Thoughts: I'm actually here to purchase this case again for my roommates build while it's on sale. He was so impressed with this case, he had to have it too. Thought I might leave a review to help others.

I absolutely love the Define R4 Silent! So many features. I've owned this case over a year and had no issues whatsoever. I was originally looking for a case with lots of space and airflow (my gamer needs). This fit the bill and then some. My build was the smoothest I've ever had because of the massive amount of space, well designed cable management, no sharp edges and the versatility of this case. Yes, it's not flashy but, that's a definite plus for me. I prefer function over flash any day. I also like the heavy duty black matte finish. I tend to overclock quite a bit and even running my high wattage AMD 8-core at a steady 4.8Ghz... nothing but cool air flows out of this case, even in heavy gaming sessions. I have (9) Phanteks 140mm fans running along with a push/pull Corsair 280mm radiator, which by the way, slipped in without any difficulties. I did remove the hard drive cages for maximum air movement as I use 2 Samsung 500GB SSD's in RAID 0 mounted behind the motherboard. My setup is lightning fast with a crossfire Sapphire R9 270X Vapor-X setup and yet, still remains ice cold. Everything is tied together with an Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard and according to the UEFI thermal readings, all components are running below the normal operating temperatures. The few cons I had with this case were quickly and easily overcome. I would expect a case like this to sell for much more given all that's included.

Anyways, I hope this review helps anyone thinking about getting this case. Thanks to Fractal Design for building such an amazing case and thanks to Newegg for stocking it. Cheers.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case with a few caveats

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: Tons of real estate; you could park a Volkswagen Beetle in this thing
Simple, sleek esthetic; this case just looks great
Has the feel of good build quality
I'm lovin the fan filters; goodbye to the macgyvered nylon stocking fan covers I've created in the past :)
I like the fan speed switch
CPU tempos remain cool without ompromise to sound dampening
So yes, he sound dampening works great

Cons: It's heavy!!
I had to mod it to fit my atx mobo (see below)
The drive bay cages still don't provide enough mounting options (see below)
Would be nice if the bottom fan filter was removable from the front of the case
The front power button is bright

Other Thoughts: I had to mod this out of the box. I have a Gigabyte GA H97 D3H ATX mobo (socket 1150). Like some other newer mobo's it includes an odd standoff point near the 24 pin power plug. I can't fault Fractal Design for this, as it's a generational thing between products - using an older, but not obsolete, manafactured case with a newer generation of mobo. So there was no no case standoff hole that lined up for this extra mobo hole. I dry mounted the mobo, scored the mounting point with a small nail, then removed the mobo and drilled the hole with a slightly smaller drill bit than the standoff size. It's important to use the slightly smaller drill bit to tap the standoff screw properly. After several attempts the standoff screw tapped, and fortunately it lined up perfectly.

The front blue power button is bright - this wouldn't be too big a deal if the light was confined to just the power button itself, but the light extends into a small vertical slit that faces forward and that's what is a bit ovnoxious. I have it covered with a tiny piece of fitted black tape - barely noticeable.

My main reason for deducitng an egg has to do with the HDD cage mounting options. For a case that advertises multiple HDD cage orientations it has two design flaws: no ability to mount the 5 bay cage on its own, and no ability to mount the 3 bay cage in a front to back orientation. Like so many componenets aimed at enthusiasts who are primarily gamers, it hits that mark beautifully, but tends to overlook the needs of a video editor, where HDD storage usually trumps the need for water cooling options or other considerations. So you can mount the 3 bay cage alone, or the 3 and 5 bay cages in the advertised configurations. However you can not mount the 5 bay cage alone. For me this would be the ideal option. Because I have 3 large capacity HDD's under heavy use in editing (creating higher drive temps), and an SSD, I don't like to stack the drives right on top of each other. But if I have to, then a front to back cage orientation is better to take advantage of the HDD cooling properties of an additional lower 140mm front fan. As I will add even more storage, the ability to mount the 5 bay cage alone becomes more pressing; both in order to acommadate them, and to still leave the upper portion of the case open for better airflow from the front upper fan. This is a bizarre oversight that I understand has been resolved with the R5. I solved this partially by buying a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter for the upper (usually optical) drive bays. This holds my SSD and leaves the lower portion for HDD's and open to more airflow. I didn't want to mount my SSD in the option behind the mobo as it then requires removing hte mobo to acces it again. Something that is also resolved on the R5

In terms of my CPU, fitting a 212 EVO is a piece of cake.Tons of room. Also, with three 140 mm intake fans (two front, one bottom) and only one rear 140mm exhaust (positive pressure) my CPU temps are still
