The Define R4 is the latest in the Define series of silent computer cases. Building on the award-winning foundation of the Define R3, the R4 retains minimalistic yet elegant styling with extraordinary performance, noise reduction features, premium build quality and unparalleled value in this price range while adding a suite of innovative new features.

No longer are you forced to choose between silence and support for liquid cooling, the Define R4 offers both. Top fan positions now allow slim 240 radiators to be mounted internally and select slim radiators can also be mounted in the front fan holder. An integrated fan controller is easily accessible behind the front panel, putting fan control at your fingertips. Cable management and intelligent layout are taken to new levels with the option of mounting up to two 2.5in, SSDs on the reverse side of the motherboard tray, effectively mitigating visible cable clutter. When it comes to cable routing, the Define R4 has it covered. Over one full inch of cable routing space behind the motherboard plate has been achieved by widening the case by just 8mm.

This mid-tower case is a great choice for everything from gaming enthusiast systems to silent home theater and corporate applications. The R4 comes pre-fitted with dense noise absorbing bitumen material on the front, top and side panels. The exclusive ModuVent TM System provides three panels which also have noise-absorbing material; these panels can be removed to expose three air vents for additional fans for high air flow applications. Rubber padding on the case feet, anti-vibration pads for the power supply and HDDs also help reduce noise.

Configuration flexibility is enhanced thanks to two hard drive cages (featuring steel drive trays with black silicone mounting grommets) that support a total of eight 3.5in. HDDs or 2.5in. SSDs.  The top five-bay cage is easily rotatable and removable; removing the top cage allows support for graphics cards up to 470mm in length. The bottom three-bay cage is mounted to the chassis by screws instead of rivets, allowing you to easily remove both drive cages for complete flexibility. The spacious sleek black interior can support CPU coolers up to 170mm high. If cooling becomes more of a priority, this system can support up to seven fans with removable, washable filters to provide airflow from five sides of the case. The case also includes cable routing cutouts with improved rubber grommets to ensure greater fit and retention. The bottom of the case has a filter over the power supply and 120/140mm intake fan vent which can be easily removed for cleaning.

  • newegg Optimized for Noise Reduction Pre-fitted with dense noise-absorbing material, the R4 also features ModuVent panels which prevent noise from escaping unused fan vents when silence is required. If cooling becomes more of a priority than noise reduction, the ModuVent panels can be removed to expose additional air vents for optional fans.
  • newegg Support for Liquid Cooling You no longer have to make the choice between liquid cooling and silence, the R4 offers both. Top fan positions now allow slim 240mm radiators to be mounted. Select slim radiators can be mounted in the front fan holder (requires the bottom HDD cage to change position).
  • newegg Innovative SSD Mounting Options Hide those drives! Take cable management and interior cleanliness to a whole new level. Mount up to two 2.5in, SSDs out of sight on the back side of the motherboard tray.
  • newegg Integrated Fan Controller Fan control at your fingertips. The integrated fan controller is easily accessible behind the front panel and manages up to three fans, allowing you to tailor the fan speed to your needs.
  • newegg Removable HDD Cages Configuration flexibility is enhanced thanks to two hard drive cages (featuring steel drive trays with black silicone mounting grommets) that support a total of eight 3.5in.
  • newegg Advanced Cable Management Over 1in. of space behind the motherboard plate means cables can be conveniently routed through five rubber grommets into a generous compartment behind the motherboard to reduce cable clutter and improve airflow.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent case

Pros: I love this case. It's very silent, and on top of that has the best air flow of any case trying to quiet things down. The air flow is unbeatable, because the top hard drive cage is removable and leaves the top 140mm intake fan unobstructed and able to deliver cool air right to my DCUII R9 290. The side panels are VERY sturdy for the money, and all of the edges are bent metal, making it very difficult to cut yourself during a build with this case. The best part IMO is there is a cutout on the side panel right next to where your GPU is, where you can mount a 140mm fan to really keep your GPU cool. Even better, Fractal Design gives you the option to keep that part covered with sound dampening foam, or open it up with a fan. No other case trying to be silent does this.

Cons: The top area where you have the option to mount a 240-280 mm rad, or two 120mm or 140mm fans is a little flimsy, but I got this case so it would be silent and it doesn't matter to me. It won't fall apart or anything, but compared to the thickness and sturdiness of the rest of the case, it kind of stands out a bit.

Other Thoughts: If you can't choose between a silent case, or a case with great airflow, just get the best of both worlds and get this one.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Design, OK case

Pros: Very well designed case. Everything is thought through.

plenty of room to add a huge CPU fan if you want to do that

very very quiet

Cons: manufactured not to the best standards, it seems

front easy to fall off, then it pulls on cables inside the case

bottom is sensitive

if you have a motherboard that has a connector that goes out of the bottom of the board, there will be a PSU there, and you cant use the port ... although i do think its nice to have the PSU down there and I wont use the port

power button seems to be flimsy, the blue glow on mine broke after a day

Other Thoughts: the case I got shipped with two (2) motherboard connectors labeled RESET SW , one of them was was actually the power switch, I had to guess which

as previously mentioned the light around the power button broke the first day

5 out of 5 eggsLove this case

Pros: Well thought out case. Many options for routing cables and mounting hard drives. Very quiet and sturdy constuction for the most part with foam on the sides to reduce noise. Looks nice too.

Cons: A bit big and heavy... but it's a full size tower, so what would you expect?

5 out of 5 eggsWell Designed Case

Pros: Of all the systems I have built, this case is by far the best. The cable management is great (no clutter). The drive bays, with the removable top section allows you to mount 4 drives, in addition to a DVD drive and gives you room. The fan placement and number of fans allows you to keep positive pressure in the case and the dust accumulation to a minimum. I like the PS on the bottom (w/ 2 fans) and the 2 on top - kind of a push-pull. All in all a great case (some far I've built two systems with this case - one black - one white). I will continue to use this case for future builds, unless Fractal Design comes up with a better one.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Good price, great case - didn't have any shipping damage from Newegg or another vendor, but if carton is damaged don't accept it without inspecting the contents first.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great ventilation with fans, plus dust filters. Easy cable management and routing, considering this was my first build. Very solid case; it's heavy, which could be a con for some.

Cons: Documentation was weak because there are some unlabeled cables. It only included 8 motherboard mounts when the box says 9, but I only needed 6 so that doesn't matter. None of these "cons" matter once everything is set up correctly.

Other Thoughts: It's $119.19 now, but I got it at a deal for $79.99, which helped my decision.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Case

Pros: I Love This Case! It is roomy, fairly quiet, looks clean, nice button and port locations, excellent wire routing options inside, and has plenty of room for expansion. This is a very sturdy case and has lots of options for increased cooling.

Cons: Not completely silent - but I would have been surprised.

Other Thoughts: I was looking for a silent case, this comes pretty close. I do wonder if upgrading to Noctua fans will reduce the noise more (I have Noctua on my wife's computer and it is what I would call silent). I have the fans set midway between 'Quiet' and 'Performance'. This is a large case - providing all the great room inside. I would purchase this case again.

4 out of 5 eggsNice with a few flaws

Pros: Very quiet and highly modular. Has space behind the mobo to mount and forget SSDs. Half of the HDD trays can come out of the case to improve airflow from the front fans.

Totally silent and runs a Haswell cool without aftermarket cooling systems.

Cons: Plastic front cover pops off easily, especially if you are transporting the computer. If the front cover comes off, the intake/exhaust fan control cables unplug, which is a PITA to reconnect.

Air filter on the bottom of the case is highly fragile if you transport it.

Other Thoughts: The best case I've had, with some minor flaws.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperior looks, quiet, cable management, ease of building.

Pros: Color and finish are far superior to previous cases I have owned or built.

Quiet case - if my home's central AC is not in operation, I can hear only a faint whisper of fans from a few feet away, even when gaming (ex. Skyrim - ultra high detail). When the AC is on, that's all I hear. I am very impressed and happy with the level or lack of sound emanating from the case. I built a computer with the R2 version of the product, and it was more silent than this Mid tower version.

Ample room for cable management on the underside of the motherboard. Rubber grommets are lined around the cable management holes that provide additional aesthetics to hide cables as well as protection from sharp edges.

Better airflow than I anticipated considering the design with a closed front door. Didn't think the vents along the sides of the front door would be sufficient, but was pleasantly surprised that the components are not choked, and still kept cool. If using an all-in-one liquid cooler (120mm or 140mm), my advice would be to move the rear fan to the bottom of the case, forward of the power supply mount, pulling air in from the floor.

Kept the blue led light as the power indicator rather than HD use indicator. I'm partial to the look of the blue LED; classy.

The design of the unit provides a great (subjective) ease of build, and this is always a pro for builders, but a one time thing (or two if you re-use it personally). I like the HDD trays. I like the thumb screws. I like the rubber HDD vibration grommets supplied and all the screws, ties, and details provided in packaging the product.

Cons: Weight - however, you need to understand that this is a result of the materials required to shield the sound from resonating out of the case. You know this going in, buying the product.
