5 out of 5 eggsRoomy, quiet, easy to work with

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: • Big roomy interior is easy to work in
• Lots of easy access drive bays
• Upper drive bay cage can be inserted for easy drive access or to channel air toward the motherboard
• shock mounted drive trays
• cable pass throughs so you can route cabling through back side of motherboard plate
• Multiple locations for additional fans
• Unobtrusive design, looks nice wherever you put it
• Top front bezel USB and audio ports
• Covered front drive bays
• Extra expansion slot on back plane for items that do not use a PCI slot and instead plug into motherboard, such as a serial connector. It leaves all the PCI slots open for cards.

Cons: None after a year of use and several occasions to work inside the case replacing components.

Other Thoughts: • I've had this unit for over a year
• I have a Cooler Master Hyper T4 CPU Cooler which fits just fine -- and by using the bottom HD drive bays with the upper (empty) cage oriented properly there is no obstructions between the front panel intake and the CPU cooler
• I've replaced hard drives and even added an SSD by removing the motherboard and placing the drive on the back side of the motherboard plate (I could have just used an empty drive bay, but this unit is so easy to work inside that I decided to do it the right way).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case for a silent workstation

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: Lined with padding to dampen sound, lots of drive bays, fits full ATX MB, 5 bay removable drive cage, several spots to add fans to top and side which are covered if not needed, solid case that does not warp, good positioning of front USB ports, looks professional

Cons: Fans are a little noisy on high speed, not that they run on high after initial POST, fit not perfect (close though, and does not warp), side panel does not swing out but slides on, two spots for 2.5 drives is on the back of the MB mounting plate, if you don't add on build, it isn't going to happen, had to put a board under the case to clear the carpet due to the PS vent being on the bottom,

Other Thoughts: Used this for a Xeon graphic design workstation. It's so quiet I had to check for airflow to be sure the fans were still spinning. Only using M.2 and PCIE SSDs. Wish I could have removed all the drive cages, not just the 5 bay. It is quiet enough, that I am thinking of adding a couple more fans to increase the cooling. I worry that the sound dampening is also trapping heat that would otherwise be absorbed by the metal of the case. This isn't a light case. No big deal if you plan to leave it in place. I'm please with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsIt arrived a little bit broken

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: If you are a hardware nerd like me, you will likely find this case to be beautiful in its simplicity. That's important to me when choosing a case, since that is the part I always have to look at.

I'm happy to report the sound deadening works just fine. I'll be using this case for storage so there will be 8 hard drives in this case. There is plenty of room behind the drive bays for cable management.

Cons: It arrived broken. The plastic pins at the top that hold the front fascia to the metal case had broken off. There was also a dent in the metal behind the back panel. So minus 1 egg.

The fans aren't 4 pin PWM. In a case that is supposed to be silent, PWM fan control is a must. I've got other fans, so not a big issue for me, but it would be nice to not to have to replace them.

Other Thoughts: Fractal has a pretty good reputation so I'm going to take the broken plastic pins and dent as a fluke. Likely they both happened at the same time. It's really not a big deal to me. The dent doesn't effect anything and i just super-glued the pins back in place. This case looks great and is aesthetically completely different compared to my current gaming rig. Which is packed with blue led's and UV lights to make the waterloop look good. The R4 isn't flashy, it just looks good. It's like a black suit.

You get a lot of case for what you pay. I'll build a new gaming rig during the next year after the release of all the new hardware. When I do, this case will receive strong consideration. Or maybe an R5 if I get crazy.

5 out of 5 eggsPerforms well with silence!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: - Using all the rubber grommets and all the other silence helping tools keep my PC quiet
- Good room to build a standard ATX PC or smaller
- Most of the metal, plastic, etc. feels like its good quality
- The size of the case as a whole is a nice roomy feel inside without it being overbearing and trouble finding a place to put your PC
- Everything came in good condition, no faulty IO or bent metals

Cons: - The top of the case if you don't have fans installed can droop down a bit (they fixed this in the newer cases)
- The cable management rubber is kinda wonky and comes off the holes.

Other Thoughts: I've had this product for about a year now I think and I have no real complaints that have made me hate Fractal at all. I fit a standard ATX board with a EVGA 970, Hyper 212 EVO, standard size PSU, and all the extra 3.5''/2.5'' drives in no problem. I would've gotten the model with the side window but I'm cheap and my friends don't get to see my rig often because I got a Micro ATX PC for LAN parties.

4 out of 5 eggsAs expected minus one issue

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: - Ton of drive bays
- At low speed the two fans are extremely quiet
- Reasonably well built

Cons: Even though the case is rather heavy the top and bottom panels are rather thin. My top panel bowed downwards which makes the side panels bow outwards slightly.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the sale price (with free shipping) I paid. At its normal price and shipping I would consider others cases as well. It might still win but it's not a slam dunk.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid design, solid case.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: 3 fan controller included with 2 140mm fans, spaces for 6+ fans (1 back, 1 side, 2 top, 2 front, 1 bottom?) all intakes with integrated filters (Front and bottom, I'm not sure about the side fans), . Fixed drive bays are well placed. Cable management system is on point, bottom vent and mount for the psu is also very good. Door mounts and thumbscrews are very easy to use. Removable drive caddies are very good. 5 drive bays are removable as a block from the front with 2 simple thumbscrews. Includes motherboard standoff phillips/standard socket to allow easy screw in of motherboard stand offs.

Cons: No glaring or obvious cons.

Other Thoughts: To make it absolutely perfect.

Make all 3.5 and 5.25 bays fully tool-less.
Mount motherboad standoffs in standard atx prior to shipping or include a driver hand tool to screw in screws and motherboard standoff's
Find a way to get more bays in the front that don't restrict the GPU length or airflow from the front intakes.
Include a 3rd fan (front mount).
Include air filter for side fan.
Increase vertical spaced between drives in drive bays by a few mm to increase cable clearance from adjacent drives.
Increase top of the case space to accommodate larger radiator/fan units
Possibly rubber line (thin layer) the snap in fan mounts in the front to further mechanically isolate the fans from the chassis.
Case speaker for feedback sounds?

5 out of 5 eggsQuite possibly the best PC Case I've ever seen, much less owned.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case

Pros: Incredible cooling. The stock fans are top notch. I'll be getting more of those to replace the ones I just transferred from my previous build.
Beautiful case, very simplistic appearance. You wouldn't think so many features were contained within.
Removable HDD trays. I believe there are 12 total, the top 8 are all easily removable/attachable.
Lots of internal space. I'm using a Noctua NHD15, and there is still somehow loads more space.
Fan filters are accessible and easy to clean/remove.
Lots of fan mounts. I love that there's a fan mount behind the PSU mount.
If you maintain the stock build, the sound dampeners are legit and really do work.
Loads of space for cable management. By far the roomiest cable management compartment I've seen on a standard ATX case.
Vertical USB slots. I'm clumsy and have broken plenty of dongles. This seems much more practical, at least to me.
Case side panels are secure and easy to remove.
I love the color scheme. The whites work beautiful with the black for some reason.

Cons: The PC Case door is plastic. Not a huge turn-off, but it does feel a little dinky.
The bottom 4 HDD trays can't be removed.
It's actually pretty heavy, which is likely one of the reasons the PC case door is plastic.
I don't like that the power button is exposed. I have children, and this has already proven problematic.
Only comes with 2 fans.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for an affordable ATX case with loads of unique features, a sleek and contemporary look, lots of open space, and incredible stock fans (2), this is the case for you. It fits the Noctua NH D15 easily.
