The Define R4 is the latest in the Define series of silent computer cases. Building on the award-winning foundation of the Define R3, the R4 retains minimalistic yet elegant styling with extraordinary performance, noise reduction features, premium build quality and unparalleled value in this price range while adding a suite of innovative new features.

No longer are you forced to choose between silence and support for liquid cooling, the Define R4 offers both. Top fan positions now allow slim 240 radiators to be mounted internally and select slim radiators can also be mounted in the front fan holder. An integrated fan controller is easily accessible behind the front panel, putting fan control at your fingertips. Cable management and intelligent layout are taken to new levels with the option of mounting up to two 2.5in, SSDs on the reverse side of the motherboard tray, effectively mitigating visible cable clutter. When it comes to cable routing, the Define R4 has it covered. Over one full inch of cable routing space behind the motherboard plate has been achieved by widening the case by just 8mm.

This mid-tower case is a great choice for everything from gaming enthusiast systems to silent home theater and corporate applications. The R4 comes pre-fitted with dense noise absorbing bitumen material on the front, top and side panels. The exclusive ModuVent TM System provides three panels which also have noise-absorbing material; these panels can be removed to expose three air vents for additional fans for high air flow applications. Rubber padding on the case feet, anti-vibration pads for the power supply and HDDs also help reduce noise.

Configuration flexibility is enhanced thanks to two hard drive cages (featuring steel drive trays with black silicone mounting grommets) that support a total of eight 3.5in. HDDs or 2.5in. SSDs. The top five-bay cage is easily rotatable and removable; removing the top cage allows support for graphics cards up to 470mm in length. The bottom three-bay cage is mounted to the chassis by screws instead of rivets, allowing you to easily remove both drive cages for complete flexibility. The spacious sleek black interior can support CPU coolers up to 170mm high. If cooling becomes more of a priority, this system can support up to seven fans with removable, washable filters to provide airflow from five sides of the case. The case also includes cable routing cutouts with improved rubber grommets to ensure greater fit and retention. The bottom of the case has a filter over the power supply and 120/140mm intake fan vent which can be easily removed for cleaning.

  • newegg Fully Transparent Side Panel Window The acrylic window side panel features the same clean, Scandinavian design as the case itself, and has a completely flat outer surface without any plastic bezel or rivets, allowing you to display your setup in style.
  • newegg Optimized for Noise Reduction Pre-fitted with dense noise-absorbing material, the R4 also features ModuVent panels which prevent noise from escaping unused fan vents when silence is required. If cooling becomes more of a priority than noise reduction, the ModuVent panels can be removed to expose additional air vents for optional fans.
  • newegg Support for Liquid Cooling You no longer have to make the choice between liquid cooling and silence, the R4 offers both. Top fan positions now allow slim 240mm radiators to be mounted. Select slim radiators can be mounted in the front fan holder (requires the bottom HDD cage to change position).
  • newegg Innovative SSD Mounting Options Hide those drives! Take cable management and interior cleanliness to a whole new level. Mount up to two 2.5in, SSDs out of sight on the back side of the motherboard tray.
  • newegg Integrated Fan Controller Fan control at your fingertips. The integrated fan controller is easily accessible behind the front panel and manages up to three fans, allowing you to tailor the fan speed to your needs.
  • newegg Advanced Cable Management Over 1in. of space behind the motherboard plate means cables can be conveniently routed through five rubber grommets into a generous compartment behind the motherboard to reduce cable clutter and improve airflow.

5 out of 5 eggsSilent

Pros: This thing is great!
Can't hear it running at all when switched to medium fan setting. The temperatures are all lower then my old case when idle and when torture testing.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For me, it is a little pricy for a case, but after using it, it is worth the cost.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Case

Pros: Construction

Cons: Might be too heavy for some people

Other Thoughts: Very well built case. Study and classic looking without looking dated. Very clean design. This is a huge case, hard to believe it is a mid-tower. Think you could fit about two standard Dell machines in this one. Sturdy and heavy, don't buy this if you plan to move your computer frequently.

3 out of 5 eggsA Good Case With Quality Control Issues

Pros: -Hefty and solid case
-Nice SSD mounting options
-Looks nice
-Good number of bays

Cons: -Front audio jack broke within the first day of using it and very mild use
-USB 3.0 connector is defective and one of the pin holes is blocked up
-Customer support is not very good

Other Thoughts: This case would be 5 stars if they resolved their quality control issues, or at least offered adequate customer support to resolve these problems.

5 out of 5 eggsAttractive design

Pros: Nicely styled mid-tower case. Fine machined edges so you won't cut/scratch yourself. Plenty of expansion for internal drives. Overall, just a really nice case for what I do.

Cons: None that come to mind

3 out of 5 eggsNice case, but some issues

Pros: Very big case,
Nice number of bays,
Good price

Cons: No HDD led - important for new builds,
Only 120mm fan locations - no good if salvaging other size fans from an old build,

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: very well built case with lots of cable room in back of mb,,, very clean look and QUIET

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: the fans in this case are 3 pin so they will work on a 4 pin asus z97 board but without the board controlling them.. the fan control switch works well though and has not caused any issues at all.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Rather than mention what others did about this case I will touch on some things not mentioned. See other thoughts for more about this case. Almost everything is positive about this solution but a couple things surprised me in a case of caliber. Cons will cover that. This is certainly a well made case though and the cons are more of an annoyance than anything.

Cons: This unit has the side window. You give up a what I believe is a critical fan blowing in from the side, aimed at the Mother Board. There is another model that is slightly cheaper that omits the window in favor of including the side fan. You may want to consider the other model.

Why on earth there is no HDD LED I will never know. Seems a small item but I look at the HDD LED a lot of the time when trying to figure out what is going on with the PC drives. Call it a good half egg off. The quick fix is to connect the power on light to the HDD LED connectors on the mainboard. I have a lot of lights in the fans so I can always look there to see if the unit is on. But in hundreds of builds I have never seen this omission.

Not sure if it is my power supply or the case but the bottom fan would not mount due to interference from the power supply. Ended up having to tied it on with cable ties... In such a big case they would be wise to move the bottom fan towards the front 1/8 to a 1/4 inch. Another half egg gone.

Other Thoughts: Overall I really like this case and it is a pleasure to do a build using it. I normally buy a cheaper middle of the road case but after this build I am rethinking that strategy. There are ample places to mount fans in this case and the 140mm fans move more air and are quieter than smaller counterparts. Case is big, be sure to look at the dimensions if you have a compact space for it. Had a hard time in trying to find a water cooler that would fit in the top 2 fan mounts space (240-280mm). Not enough depth and finally gave up in favor of a rear unit. I used this one and it fits nicely: 1 x Cooler Master Nepton 140XL – Push-Pull CPU Liquid Water Cooling System with 140mm Radiator and 2 JetFlo Fans.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful case.

Pros: 1. Build quality is AMAZING. Solid case, feels great to work in and everything is very well built.

2. Looks very good. I wanted a more professional less 'gamer bling' case. Moving to this from a Thermaltake Overseer rx1 was a HUGE step up.

3. Quite as hell. This case makes almost no noise. I have all the 140mm fan spots populated including the bottom. I am running two Gigabyte Windforce GTX760's in sli and I have a CM Hyper 212 EVO. It is still pretty much silent. (Phanteks 140mm fans)

4. Power button. I know this is a small detail, but the power button feels so satisfying to press. It's like pressing a heavy mechanical key switch... that 'chick chick' feel is great.

5. Cable management is a dream. Lots of room, many tie-downs, grommets in all the right places. Perfect.

6. Removable hard drive cages are a nice addition for better airflow. The whole assembly can be removed with 10 screws. The drive caddies are incredibly rigid as well.

Cons: Honestly I couldn't find anything worth putting here.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this case to anyone for pretty much any build. It is at the time of this review my favorite mid tower case and will probably continue to be until fractal comes out with a define r5 or something of the sort.

Just a little side note: The hard drive cages after you take them out... I honestly don't think you could break them even if you took a hammer to them... they are rock solid.

If you are still debating on rather or not to buy this case, look around for some YouTube videos like LinusTechTips or Teksyndicate and brows around the internet. Pretty much everyone loves this case.
