1 out of 5 eggsGreat case, broken front panel

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Excellent, well designed case. The rubber cable guides are particularly classy, there is plenty of room for giant motherboards, coolers or power supplies, and the plentiful array of hard drive bays come with a full set of removable trays. The case chassis itself is heavy, with high build quality, and virtually every surface is covered with soundproofing material.

My only complaint with respect to the case design is that the upper thumbscrew for the removable 3.5" drive bay is partially blocked by the 5.25" drive bay, making it difficult to remove (especially since all of the case thumbscrews were *extremely* tight from the factory).

Were it not for the problems with the removable front panel, this would have been a five-star review (see below).

Cons: The removable front panel (containing the front USB and audio ports and case doors) came heavily damaged. Most of the posts, which connect the panel to the case chassis, were snapped off of the panel. The remaining posts hold the panel on, but it's extremely loose due to all the broken posts.

One of the latches of the inner front panel door covering the front fans was also broken, so the fan door does not open or close properly.

Many of the ventilation slots along either side of the front panel are even cracked or broken as well.

Based on the original product packaging and nature of the damage, it's clear that either the front panel was compromised during installation and shipped anyway, or that the front panel was already compromised and installed anyway.

This is a very nice case, but the front panel attachment posts are fragile and under-designed. My problems with the damaged removable front panel make for an extremely disappointing addendum to what would have been an otherwise perfect build.

I don't feel that it's worth completely deconstructing my build in order to return the entire case, but individual front panels are apparently not available. I wish I could recommend this otherwise fantastic case, but I worry that quality control issues such as this would come back to haunt other purchasers.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Classy looking, lots of room, great cable management, very quiet. Easy access to fans and are able to move them around or add more as needed. Moveable HDD cages is nice.

Cons: Like others have said, it would have been nice if the bottom dust filter could be removed from the side instead of straight back. It may be an inconvenience for some.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am very pleased with this case.

5 out of 5 eggsSurpassed my expectations

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Built solid as a rock, has sound damping material lining the sides (I work in acoustics), is HUGE, has wonderful cable routing options, large space between the back of the mobo and side panel means lots of space for wires to be placed, I could just go on and on about this thing! It's gorgeous to boot, too! I have never spent more than $60 on a computer case before, always focused my money on what's inside, but I expect to use this case for a long, long time! It is well built, well thought out, has great airflow, many configuration options, comes with many vibration damping/sound deadening pieces, and it really does look fantastic! It was a pleasure to set up!

Cons: More being nitpicky than cons, but two things caught my attention. First, when the front bay door is closed, the two front fans are a little starved for air. Not completely, but still. A small gap would be nice. I may cut out a channel in the foam on the back of the door to give some breathing room. Second, while moving the case around on my carpeted floor, one of the rubber pads on the back foot came off. The glue was very sticky though, and I simply stuck it back on when I was done moving it and it has held so far.

Other Thoughts: I'm not exaggerating when I say this case is solid, well built, and tough, it is the sturdiest computer case I've ever owned, but this case also has a very classy look to it. Half way between serious gaming machine and executive supercomputer. It is simple, elegant, commanding, bold, and has all the features I wanted.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best case for me

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: This case is the best that i have found. Its better than what i expected. Very very large case with plenty of room and the quality of this case it excellent!! The look of this case is just what i was looking for . It doesnt have that cheap plasticy look that other more expensive cases do its really a luxury case. Yes, this case has very good airflow as well. I have had a total of 5 cases (this is the 6th one) and this is definitely the best case i have purchased. Good job fractal design.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Fractal design is my brand for cases from now on

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Quiet fans, good ventilation, good cable management, sleek design

Cons: Weight

Other Thoughts: Although this enclosure is rather heavy, I think shipping weight was 40lbs, it has been a great for me. I especially like the cable management setup for this case. Numerous spots to put the cables through so all excess cabling is hidden on the backside of the case. Fans are removable and can easily be moved to different vents on the case.

4 out of 5 eggssolid good case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very nice layout. Good cable management plenty of bays. Good sound insulation. Sturdy construction. Plenty of space for extra fans if you need them.

Cons: Only one external LED (around the power switch). With SSD's it is nice to know when I/O is going on, vs. the OS just being locked up. Switched the power LED cable to HDD activity on MoBo. The case is so blissfully quiet that I occasionally walk up and wonder if the machine is on.

Other Thoughts: I've gotten used to tool-less cases at work. This one uses finger screws pretty much everywhere. Tool-less, but not quite as good as some of the clip/latch designs as the screws drop and roll around on the floor and have to be picked up.

5 out of 5 eggsFractal Case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very Impressed - simply put it just works. Nice clean simple design. Solid and easy to build in.

First case in this price range I didn't have to de-burr or dull an edge on. Feel like I got a great value here for what I paid.

This will be an easy case to live with. The finish doesn't show every fingerprint and its easy to wipe down. The sound stuff works and the air flow is good.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wanted a plain case that was solid and easy to clean.

My last case was really cool looking and had a sister disco light show through the side window. After owning it awhile that got old and it was hard to keep clean.

Oddly enough this one is so plain and large that everyone who has seen it comments on it. It has more WOW factor than the fancy one :-)

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, but a few minor issues.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: -Vast amounts of space
-Easy cable routing
-Sturdy construction
-Large, quiet fans
-Air filters
-Plenty of options for liquid cooling
-HEAVY
-Doesn't look like a rejected prop from Batman Forever

Cons: -Motherboard standoffs
-Front panel wiring
-Customer service can be a bit slow
-HEAVY
-Bottom air filter may not be easily accessible once the system is in place.
-Power LED is incredibly bright.

Other Thoughts: To start off with, this is an incredibly well built case. There is an absolutely ridiculous amount of space, which makes it quite easy to work in. The included 140mm fans are, for all intents and purposes, silent, and seem to do a good job of circulating cool air around the system.

The sound dampening material does quite well at making even a high performance system essentially noiseless (if you pick the right components), as does the sheer weight of the case. The weight is both a pro and a con because while it means your system won't walk away easily, it also means moving it yourself is a bit of a hassle. But knowing that, you can plan for it.

The air filters are a nice touch, but it would have been better to have the filter slide out from the side or front, as many people don't have enough room behind their PC to remove the filter once everything is in place.

One of the best features, however, is its understated design. There are no stupid windows, no flashy lights, no angled plastic pieces, and absolutely no branding whatsoever. It's a design that's aesthetically pleasing, but will blend nicely to almost any environment. This alone makes it a better case than the vast majority of clown-car boxes that look like rejects from the Batman Forever set. Basically, you end up with a professional appearance instead of a 13 year old's idea of what "teh futar!!" looks like. Despite the issues I'll mention next, this alone will make me look at Fractal for any future builds.

My only major gripes come with the fit & finish of the case. For one, it shipped with 6mm standoffs. I only realized this when I tried to install my video card, and with the bracket perfectly aligned to the case, the PCI-E connector would not fully seat. Turns out, this is a known issue with the R2, and I contacted Fractal about the problem. It took a week to hear back, but they did ship me a set of replacement standoffs that work perfectly. They also included an extra 140mm fan, and a new wiring harness for the audio ports.

Why the new wiring harness? Turns out the front audio ports are wired backwards. I only realized this AFTER I got everything up and running. But really, it's easy enough to just plug into the other port. I wasn't about to pull this beast of a case out just to swap a couple wires.

There's an included fan controller, but I had enough ports on the motherboard that it's not necessary for me.

Finally, the power LED on the front panel is obnoxiously bright blue. This was solved easily enough by disconnecting the leads and hiding them behind the motherboard tray.

Overall, this case is sturdy, spacious, and looks great. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because of the issues I mentioned with the standoffs and the wait time with customer service.

5 out of 5 eggsmost sound proof case ever!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-TI Titanium Grey Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Sound damping is top notch. Includes three fans and a basic fan controller, if needed. Front looks sleek and impressive. Excellent cable routing options. SSD drives mount perfectly to existing trays.

Cons: Heavy and very tall, will not fit inside most computer desks.

Other Thoughts: Will buy again, sound damping is totally worth it.
