The Define XL R2 is in a sleek and stylish Scandinavian form, capable of providing superb cooling and ventilation capabilities with exceptional expandability. Equipped with Fractal Design’s innovative ModuVent feature, this chassis has an updated internal layout that offers greater expandability, modularity and flexibility, including capacity for 9 PCI cards and two HDD cages that can be repositioned to provide more space for water cooling radiators.

  • newegg Silent case with high density To achieve a high level of noise reduction, material with mass should be incorporated which is what Fractal Design strives to achieve with the dense bitumen used on the side panels.
  • newegg ModuVent design The unique ModuVent design allows the user to choose between optimal silence or maximum airflow. If cooling becomes more of a priority than noise reduction, the ModuVent panels can be removed to expose additional air vents for optional fans.
  • newegg Cable Management You can route the cables through the thick rubber grommets and keep them tucked away in the 26 mm routing space behind motherboard plate.
  • newegg Flexible ventilation options Up to 7 fans can be installed (2 x 120/140 mm - front, 2 x 120/140mm - top, 1 x 140mm - back, 1 x 140 mm - side panel, and 1 x140 mm - bottom ), with three silent series R2 140mm Hydraulic bearing fans pre-installed. And a fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans. The water tube holes are provided at the rear for easy water cooling setup and maintenance.
  • newegg Removable HDD cages Top HDD cage can be removed or repositioned for increased airflow whereas bottom HDD cage can be repositioned further into the case to allow for front radiator mount.
  • newegg USB 3.0 Connectivity 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0 and 2x audio ports on top panel allow handy connection to peripherals.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, but a few minor issues.

Pros: -Vast amounts of space
-Easy cable routing
-Sturdy construction
-Large, quiet fans
-Air filters
-Plenty of options for liquid cooling
-HEAVY
-Doesn't look like a rejected prop from Batman Forever

Cons: -Motherboard standoffs
-Front panel wiring
-Customer service can be a bit slow
-HEAVY
-Bottom air filter may not be easily accessible once the system is in place.
-Power LED is incredibly bright.

Other Thoughts: To start off with, this is an incredibly well built case. There is an absolutely ridiculous amount of space, which makes it quite easy to work in. The included 140mm fans are, for all intents and purposes, silent, and seem to do a good job of circulating cool air around the system.

The sound dampening material does quite well at making even a high performance system essentially noiseless (if you pick the right components), as does the sheer weight of the case. The weight is both a pro and a con because while it means your system won't walk away easily, it also means moving it yourself is a bit of a hassle. But knowing that, you can plan for it.

The air filters are a nice touch, but it would have been better to have the filter slide out from the side or front, as many people don't have enough room behind their PC to remove the filter once everything is in place.

One of the best features, however, is its understated design. There are no stupid windows, no flashy lights, no angled plastic pieces, and absolutely no branding whatsoever. It's a design that's aesthetically pleasing, but will blend nicely to almost any environment. This alone makes it a better case than the vast majority of clown-car boxes that look like rejects from the Batman Forever set. Basically, you end up with a professional appearance instead of a 13 year old's idea of what "teh futar!!" looks like. Despite the issues I'll mention next, this alone will make me look at Fractal for any future builds.

My only major gripes come with the fit & finish of the case. For one, it shipped with 6mm standoffs. I only realized this when I tried to install my video card, and with the bracket perfectly aligned to the case, the PCI-E connector would not fully seat. Turns out, this is a known issue with the R2, and I contacted Fractal about the problem. It took a week to hear back, but they did ship me a set of replacement standoffs that work perfectly. They also included an extra 140mm fan, and a new wiring harness for the audio ports.

Why the new wiring harness? Turns out the front audio ports are wired backwards. I only realized this AFTER I got everything up and running. But really, it's easy enough to just plug into the other port. I wasn't about to pull this beast of a case out just to swap a couple wires.

There's an included fan controller, but I had enough ports on the motherboard that it's not necessary for me.

Finally, the power LED on the front panel is obnoxiously bright blue. This was solved easily enough by disconnecting the leads and hiding them behind the motherboard tray.

Overall, this case is sturdy, spacious, and looks great. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because of the issues I mentioned with the standoffs and the wait time with customer service.

5 out of 5 eggsmost sound proof case ever!

Pros: Sound damping is top notch. Includes three fans and a basic fan controller, if needed. Front looks sleek and impressive. Excellent cable routing options. SSD drives mount perfectly to existing trays.

Cons: Heavy and very tall, will not fit inside most computer desks.

Other Thoughts: Will buy again, sound damping is totally worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect...

Pros: Beautiful design, great amount of space, easy to organize, and features like a fan controller, closing front panel, removable HDD/SDD mounts are, though not all necessary, provide a great amount of options, but...

Cons: ...two things. Doesn't seem all that suitable for water cooling, though this seems to be easy to work around and hardly deserves a full star removed. The bottom filter covering the PSU and bottom chassis fan, on the other hand, seems to consistently dislodge itself enough for the very minimal vibrations from the computer to cause the filter to shake against the case, causing a very faint, but annoying sound. It's easily remedied, simply move the filter back into place, but it continues to happen over and over again.

Other Thoughts: Overall, great chassis; silent, beautiful and spacious.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case

Pros: I've been building PCs for about 10 years, and this case was by far the easiest to work with. Every part has been carefully thought out: plenty of included (and properly labeled) screws, great routing options, removable hard drive trays (with rubber grommets for both standard hard drives and SSDs), filters on all air intakes, included sound insulation, the list goes on and on.

Cons: Only has 3 included 140mm fans. On the plus side, the case has room for an additional 4 fans - each slot has a removable insulated cover (which is attached by standard-size fan screws - another great design decision).

Other Thoughts: This case is huge and heavy. Pay attention to the specs and measure accordingly before buying. I recommend getting a few 140mm fans as well (120mm fans will work in each slot too).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case, Good price, lots of breathing room.

Pros: This case is extremely spacious. I really like the fact that I know I will be able to easily expand on my computer in the near future (adding a second graphics card and multiple HDDs).
The best part by far is the noise level. With the sound dampening I hardly hear my computer. It is hardly even noticeable when the graphics card's fan is hitting 70%.

Cons: Not exactly a con, but I constantly get comments about how huge it is. I like that about it though.

Other Thoughts: This is a solid case. I have had a good amount of experience helping others build their computers and I finally decided to build one for myself. I went with this case because of the sound dampening and clean look of it. I am thoroughly impressed with the form and function of this case. I'd recommend it to a friend but I don't want them to have a computer as cool looking as mine...

3 out of 5 eggsGreat case, but one problem

Pros: Amazing case. It's heavy, but solid. Lots of room and quiet.

Cons: Motherboard isn't raised enough for PCI cards to fit properly. I was able to get one of my graphics cards working, but no luck with the second one since it doesn't sit flush with my motherboard. It's pretty annoying.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid case that's very quiet

Pros: Sturdy metal case
Very quiet
Built in fan controller (3 settings)
Lots of room
Removable HDD cages
Lots of cable grommets with plenty of space in the back

Cons: The front panel is made of plastic and is connected to the rest of the case by several plastic pins. The first one i ordered actually came in busted up. The pins attaching the front panel to case were all cracked. I RMA'd it and got a new one that is in much better condition

5 out of 5 eggsBest Tower For Price

Pros: Quiet... Expect some noise, but overall, very satisfactory.

The XL R2 is HUGE. Plenty of room for all your geeky desires.

It was exactly what I needed for my EVGA Geforce GTX 770 Classified GPU. (This card is the biggest I have ever laid my eyes on)

Sturdy like the Twin Towers. It will take a controlled demolition to bring down this tower.

Very pleasant and simple design. If your like me and are not into trendy fancy designs, this tower is the one for you. I see that it is on sale for $90 as of Nov. 29, 2013. Buy one!

Cons: As it has been already posted numerous times, the instruction manual is garbage. Throw it away immediately and save yourself some time.

Other Thoughts: I don't really consider this a con because my tower is sedentary, but...

The case is heavy. And I do mean heavy. But that is to be expected from its very sturdy design.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: This case is heavy, so you know it's built to last.
Looks incredible. Not like some crazy warped misshapen case that seems to have been all the craze for over a decade.
Cable management system is bar none.
8 internal 3.5" bays. (perfect for my 8X3tb raid 6)
which have built in anti-vibration grommets.
noise dampening material on the case sides
TONNES OF SPACE FOR EVERYTHING and then some.

Cons: Umm... it doesn't cook me food like Gordon Ramsay could.

5 out of 5 eggsBig, Spacious, Tough, Admirable

Pros: This thing is big. It can hold everything I have and still leave room for tons more. Being 22" long, it fits an EVGA GTX 770 and still has about 2-3" left to go until the hard drive cage. +1 egg

Tons of room for water cooling on bottom, top, front for all you enthusiasts who want to store a yeti inside.

LOVE the cable management system with the rubber grommets, it makes it look nice! +2 eggs here.

Good style, professional looking. This was what convinced me on the case. Far too often you see similar full cases either $400+ (Lian Li) or full tower gaming cases that look like optimus prime with lights and doodads. This is a very attractive case. I especially liked the white card slot covers and the foam that lines the doors and insides that keeps the beast silent. +1 egg

This case comes with tons of screws and anti vibration rubber hard drive grommets which makes things rattle less.

Case comes with a bunch of 3.5" perpendicular hard drive rails for easy removal. SSD friendly! + 1 egg

Has dust filters, these are necessary when you have a house filled with cats.

Power supply on the bottom means less wiring hanging down.

Huge contrasting white fans for serious airflow.

Cons: Heavy, though not really a con because I like the weight.

USB ports on top may get filled with dust over time. Canned air is a necessity.

Doesn't pay my taxes.

Other Thoughts: Very awesome case. Love almost every aspect of it. Artfully designed, professional taste.

Best case I've ever owned. The benefits FAR outweigh the cons.
