3 out of 5 eggsbeautiful case but shoddy manufacturing

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: This is a very nice looking case with some nice features. The white/black contrast looks really cool, and the layout is fairly solid. Its amazing that you can get 6x 3.5" disks in this thing for how small it is.

Cons: Whoever tapped the threads in this case needs to be re-trained. Unless you have really strong fingers, you'll need a screwdriver for the thumb screws. Even worse, whomever assembled this thing decided to crank every screw down as tightly as possible. I had to be very careful in removing the screws (especially those holding the HDD carriers in place w/out buggering them up.

The mounting holes for SSDs are out of alignment. I could only use 2/4 for my Intel SSD, and I doubt its Intel that has tolerance problems.

Other Thoughts: I'm not looking forward to upgrading this computer... I don't think I'd buy this case again. This is the 3rd Fractal case I've owned, and by far its the worst.

5 out of 5 eggsA well built and though out SFF case.

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: The case is built of very high quality materials. Air cooling seems to work well. I removed all the drive cages and mounted my SSD to the front of the case below the fans behind the cover. This gave me a lot of open space for airflow. I used zip ties and command strips to get everything mounted and tied down. The result is clean-ish with there not being many unobtrusive areas to hide the cables. Fit my Asus R9 270 Direct CU II with a Silverstone ST50F-ES.

Cons: None of these are worth and egg. Just some observations.

The screws for the drive cages were very very hard to remove, even with the stubby ratcheting screwdriver I used. Careful of stripping.

For some reason there are all sorts of cable ties in the area underneath the video card that are useless if you have one installed. Could do with more cable ties on the top bars, under the front fans or next to the PSU.

All the buttons and lights on the front panel are attached. The PSU is placed in such a way where only 4 screws will fit and theres about an inch of space. If the power cables were placed here, detached from the front panel, it would be a lot easier to wire things as my mobo had all the power and usb connectors on the exact opposite corner.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but minor flaws hold it back.

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: Appears to be of high-quality from a distance. The recessed black mesh side grilles contrast nicely with the white exterior. The outer shell is very sturdy; feels more like steel used for kitchen appliances than relatively inexpensive computer cases. The underside of the outer shell and interior are completely painted. Rolled and smoothed edges mean no scrapes or cuts, especially important with such small confines.

I like the case layout. It's being used for a HTPC and I wanted something with upgrade headroom. All I/O cables are covered with black shielding and all fans are mesh sleeved. Included fans are of higher quality.

Cons: The power button feels cheap and has a lot of movement within the panel. Mine has some paint blemishes on the interior cross-members.

They painted everything AFTER they tapped it without regard for threads. This makes any task involving screws or standoffs a pain and isn't helped by the fact that the screws themselves are of poor quality and can easily be stripped.

Folks looking to use a longer GPU will be faced with a compromise on their PSU and/or storage area. You'll either tuck non-modular cables up into your storage area or have to look for a very short modular unit to clear the GPU. For having no optical bay, it sure feels like there's still a bit lacking in the packaging here.

Other Thoughts: That solid outer shell puts a good amount of pressure on the rear thumbscrews - press in lightly on the sides to relieve the pressure and ease screw removal.

Speaking of screw removal, be very careful and use a decent amount of pressure when removing the 3 Phillips screws for the drive racks. 2 of mine were already somewhat stripped. When pulling out my tapping set crossed my mind I knew things were pretty bad. Pre-installed standoffs and some tool-less assembly would go a long way here.

Speaking of tools, don't bother with the included standoff screwdriver adapter - it's just as bad as the screws. A 5mm nut driver and maybe a socket wrench depending on how much paint is acting as Loctite on your chassis are what you want. I found that a stubby flathead with a fat head worked best on the 6 stubborn "thumbscrews" for the drive racks.

With some minor difficulties the case works well. It's not something I'm eager to go playing with again any time soon. I'm content to enjoy its mini-mini-fridge aesthetics from a good distance.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, but gamers be warned...

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: The case is very compact. Perfect if your goal is portability of a moderate power gaming rig or even less. Stylish too. I particularly like the lack of drive bays. I do not use optical drives and so their phasing out is amenable to me.

Cons: The portability of the case comes at a cost... A big one. You will have a BEAR of a time fitting both a longer Gfx card and PSU into the case. In my case I had to mod it to get it to work with a an EVGA 670GTX.

It's a fantastic case otherwise.

3 out of 5 eggsNot What I Expected

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: - Fans installed are quiet on the Low and Medium fan controller settings, always a good thing.

- The overall layout and scheme of the Node is different and nice.

- Plenty of space for hard-drives. I'd recommend an ITX board that has 4 to 6 SATA ports if you want to use it to it's fullest potential. However, be warned (see cons)

- Mesh grills give the case a nice look, I also have a BitFenix Alchemy Blue LED Strip to give it some lighting so it does look cool.

Cons: - Case rattles from the hard-drive movement, constantly annoying. Had to put college textbooks on top of it to prevent it from being annoying.

-Quality seems cheaply made. I find my Silverstone FT03-MINI to be made of much superior material and seems a lot more sturdy than this.

-Screws aren't of the greatest quality. Be careful of them.

-Size was bigger than expected, but that's coming from owning the FT03 with a very small footprint.

Other Thoughts: I have a friend that currently owns a Fractal Define and he spoke so highly of it's quality. I figured the Node would at least share in it's quality seeing as it's being made by Fractal. Maybe he was wrong, but I'm just not impressed with its overall quality. Also, I thought white would have been a nice, different look. I should have went with black, as this white doesn't blend in to my silver, grey, black color scheme. Maybe I'm just OCD about it, just a little annoying.
I was very hesitant on returning this. I still am, but I feel I may have already passed the time available to return it and figured I'd keep it and use it a while before I change my mind and go back to the FT03-MINI.

4 out of 5 eggsSame Great Recipe, New Look.

This review is from: Fractal Design Node 304 FD-CA-NODE-304-WH White Aluminum / Steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case

Pros: Right out of the box, the case is identical to the Node 304 Black in terms of accessories and design, the only difference being the white exterior, black drive cages and black PCI-E slot covers. The construction feels sturdy without sharp edges, and the white exterior really brings out the simplicity and form factor. There is room for up to 6 mechanical hard drives with additional SSDs, and the case is long enough for even a Radeon 7990, if you have a reasonably sized power supply. The integrated fan controller is simple and functional, and the case has an overall clean path of airflow through the chassis. The case is big enough to accommodate large CPU air coolers as well as up to a 140mm radiator at the rear, which gives several good options for all-in-one water coolers or even a custom loop. The included fans are very quiet on low and medium settings of the integrated fan controller, and goes really well with the white exterior.

Cons: In order to install long graphics cards like the Radeon 7990, the power supply must be 160mm or shorter in depth, and modular power supplies will have to be shorter, like 140mm or so in depth. This rules out many reputable and well-priced power supplies on the market. The build quality of the case is a bit disappointing overall. The SSD mounting holes on the drive cages don't perfectly line up with the SSD, so mounting an SSD with all four screws is a real pain. The top mounting screw for the drive cages on each side do not sit evenly, and looks like it's cross-threaded, not to mention that it strips very easily. When the top cover is installed, it doesn't fit completely flush and evenly, the mounting holes for thumb screws at the rear don't line up accurately with the case, so it requires pushing the cover one way or another to install the thumb screw. The semi-gloss exterior finish feels rough and lacks sanding, and the coat of paint is very thin and easy to scratch.

Other Thoughts: I have a Silverstone ST55F-G power supply with a depth of 140mm, yet the cables still push against the pack of my graphics card. It really is crucial to get a smaller than average power supply if you want to go modular, which is a good thing to consider because there is very little room for extra cables.
