5 out of 5 eggsSoild Case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: 4 Month review: Quiet and dense this case WILL last also have a Full tower of this case and they are perfect.
They are simple, elegant and for the price you can not bet it.

Cons: not ALL of the top, none of the bottom or back have the sound proofing. This is still a quiet computer but still heads up.

Other Thoughts: I recommend not going water cooling on this case you would need to remove the sound proofing not worth it replaced the water cooler last week for air much quieter and thinking of doing the same to the other computer. AND get do not get a 240mm radiator if you do the rear fan will out into one of the 240mm fans if you do not have very slim fans on it. I would recommend a 120 rear mount for this mid tower.

4 out of 5 eggsCan this case be any better?

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Best case I've ever had. VERY quiet with a good airflow and plenty of space. Ive wanted this case for almost a year and Im not disapointed at all. Will buy from Fractal Desing in the future!

Cons: The left side pannel is not perfectly flush with the top of the case, nothing too big but its noticeable. Not enough for me to ship it back and have a new one its a little detail taht cost an egg, else i would've give 5/5!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case Lots of Room

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Love this Case. Love how much room there is and how sturdy the case is (not flimsy like most cases are)

Cons: Had difficulty fitting the cpu water cooler I have that has 2 fans and a radiator, so just ended up using 1 fan, Isnt that big of a deal

Other Thoughts: Great Case and definitely would recommend getting this case

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: - simple installation (no need for ssd mount)
- come with plenty of screw
- fan controller
- space behind motherboard for wire organization
- with sound isolation
- spacious

Cons: Not really cons, but personal preference/what I hoped for
- power LED too bright
- some metal part are not really rigid (top)

Other Thoughts: Bought it for 100$, and I think it is a very good case for the price, it has plenty of space, the hard drive are side mounted (perpendicular) so it leave even mor space for the cpu and gpu.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case, silent, and appealing minimalist design

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Metal body is very study. Cable management works great. The HDD trays sit very secure in the cages and have rubber dampers for the screw mounts (It really isn't a hassle to mount the drives on the trays. Took me about 6-7 minutes to do 4 HDDs). Having 140mm fan mounts everywhere works awesome for increasing airflow while preserving silence (bought 2 more of the Fractal Design fans that come included and I can only barely hear them running if I'm within a 2ft of the tower. The dust filters have easy access, though I wish the bottom screen could be removed from underneath the front. It would make it easier to get to if your tower sits against a wall, but if it's positioned differently, then its fine. the bottom filter also has a little latches to keep it from sliding out if your moving the tower which I found helpful.

Cons: Not anything big. I wish the Power LED was a bit dimmer. The case is very wide (not a con really), I liked that because it gave it more stability and a larger top surface for me to place my PS3 on top of it. The top panel does bow inwards a bit around the 2 metal grated fan mounts. But the size of the case did make it a bit harder to hold while moving it. But these are small things, not enough to take off a egg. Can't speak to water-cooling set ups, but I've heard some people have had problems with larger radiators.

Other Thoughts: Great case for a NAS, even if it is a little large for such an application, but the smaller Fractal Design cases were running for the same price so I got this one in case I ever wanted to switch out the components to build another desktop.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very sleek and awesome paint job on this case, all back interiors/exteriors are nice to look at, quality cages/slots, hardware and design. Nice placement of the USB slots/power button/reset/3.5 mm slots/ nice to have filters. Would of preferred the front door to be made of metallic materials but that could also add more weight. Nice built in fan switch control for improving sound/performance control of fans if coupled with Y-splitters. Love the huge cutout at the back for the motherboard and tidy cables. Love this case with a con, read below.

Cons: This case was almost perfect for me, however when you combine the H105 with corsair dominator memory, memory slots will be covered by the fans/radiator, thus it blocks the ram slots forcing you to slightly bend the upper vents up top to force ram into the slots. If given slightly more height to the case, this problem would be rectified and perhaps would be a nearly perfect case for system builders and modders.

Other Thoughts: Just a thought, but it would be nice if Fractal Design would make the front cabinet swappable with other colors for aftermarket, that would be awesome to have all black interiors/exteriors with a silver cabinet wouldn't it?

5 out of 5 eggsI love this case!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Roomy, nice cable management, QUIET. Stylish.

Cons: MB plate very tight against back of case
Only one LED

Other Thoughts: Great deal when on promo, very well made, this is the blackout model which I assume is why the bracketry is black instead of white (this is the 2nd R4 case I've bought, they are the same other than the bracket colors).

I like the white brackets a bit better, but since there's no window, etc. on the case and it's merely being used as a nas4free backup device, it doesn't really matter.

I would buy another one of these cases if I needed. They are wide, though. The sheer # of 140mm fans you can install (7) is nice if you need that much cooling - I have an additional one in the front to cool the drives.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Quiet case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: With the case sitting on my desk to the left of my monitor it is whisper quiet while idle.
Under load the only thing I hear is the video card Fan, but that is due to it being an R9 series and the case dampens the cards noise quite well.
Even with only two case fans, temperatures are excellent.
The price is reasonable in comparison to other cases.
The extra space behind the motherboard is great for cable management

Cons: Only comes with two 140mm fans (one in front one in back), rather than three (two in front one in back).

The Power Supply exhaust on the bottom of the case is a little small for the size of power supply I have.

Make sure the mainboard I/O plate is snapped in as far as it will go, some plates have extra pad shielding and will push the mainboard back too far for the screw holes to align with the spacers.

Even with these two cons the product

Other Thoughts: Build

Core i7-4790K /w Noctua D15 cooler
Trident 2x 4GB Ram running @ 2400Mhz via XMP

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet Case Has It's Flaws

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Sound Dampening
Number Of 3.5/2.5 Drive Bays
Only Two 5.25 Optical Bays (Just Right)
Amount Of Fan Locations (Nice)
Included 140mm Fans (Two Of Them, In Black)

Cons: Only Two 140mm Fans Included
No HDD/SSD L.E.D on Front Panel (Who Does That?)
Power On L.E.D. Illuminates Front Lens & Power Button
Requires Screws To Mount 5.25 Optical Drives
Requires Screws To Mount 3.5/2.5 HDD Drives

Other Thoughts: This is a nice case. It's well insulated with good quality material that won't rot like the cellular foam does.

There are plenty of fan options with this case however, this case should come with at least three 140mm fans, not two. There's another issue that is old school, having to use screws to mount 5.25 Optical drives.

Most case makers now a days have the tool-less levers which seems to work just fine and control the noise/vibration. Fractal-Design should have used this feature on this case. The HDD drive bays require screws as well. Not a bad thing considering there's 7 bays with noise potential however, they should have included a tool-less design to keep up with new case designs.

Another blunder this case has right out of the box is the fact that Fractal-Design decided this case doesn't need to have a HDD L.E.D. light. There isn't one and there isn't any wiring for one. The instructions suggest one of two methods to use the single L.E.D. light which illuminates both the front lens and the top power button. One, wire the power L.E.D. cable to the power L.E.D. header on the mother board for power illumination or two, wire the power L.E.D. cable to the HDD L.E.D. header on the mother board for HDD activity. I can't understand the logic in this because I use the HDD L.E.D. to monitor what is going on with the system when its operating.

Overall, this is a great case design with the exception of the front panel L.ED.'s being limited to just one and the 5.25 drive mounts requiring screws.

My second concern about this case manufacture is their customer support. No one will answer the phone, you have to call, listen to a greeting that says, go to our website or leave a message. When going to their website, the only option for support is submitting a trouble ticket. In my recent experience, my case was shipped with defective/damaged screws right out of the plastic bag so to mount the mother board, I was limited to just 7 of the total 9 needed screws. These screws appeared to be stamped with the Phillips cross on the head as one was totally off center and the other was flattened so much, the screw head would damage the mother board. So, I called and left a message with my information and I submitted a trouble ticket. Two weeks has past, no one has contacted me. This isn't the kind of support experience I was expecting which is why this case gets just 4 of 5 eggs rating.
