5 out of 5 eggsOne of my favorite cases so far.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: Quality materials and build.
Well designed.
Great cable management.
Very quite case.
Full bottom and front intake dust filters.
Build 2 PCs and didn't get any cuts or nicks on my hands. That's a first.

Cons: Wish that they included dust filter options for the side intake.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of them and I'm happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: - Nice, sleek design covers on the top keeps it very quiet.
- Matte black finish looks visually appealing in any environment.
- I/O ports on the top are useful and well-arranged.
- Dust filters everywhere are easy to clean and maintain.
- Room for liquid cooling radiators or a ton of case fans.
- Has two 5.25" bays with easily removable doors.
- Tons of room for GPUs. My GTX 960 only takes up a fraction of the space in this case.
- Lots of room behind the motherboard for cable management, including an indentation for extra wires.
- High quality case feet.
- Has sound proof coating on side panels.
- Fan controller is a nice addition.
- Tons of drive bays.
- Toolless expansion ports.

Cons: - Drive bays were a little hard to remove.
- Only includes two case fans, one more on the front would have been nice.
- Pets can turn this computer on and off because the power button is large and on the top of the case.
- Interior sound proof coating scratches extremely easily; not such an issue on the windowless version.
- Reset button is a little bit too small for my liking.
- Blue LED indicator light is extremely bright.

Other Thoughts: Really had to rack my brain to find cons, but none of them are significant enough for me to warrant removing an egg from it's final rating.

I would highly reccomend the Fractal Design Define R5 to anybody preparing for their first build or even to seasoned PC building veterans. Got this on sale (was also eyeballing the Corsair 200R and the Define R4) but would have gladly paid full price. It's a fantastic case all around: it's quiet, it's sleek, and it's not over-the-top garnished with LEDs and other flashy components. Dust filters make it a breeze (pun intended) to clean and the covers on the top really complete the look. Can't say enough good things about this case, except that it really is amazing.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: It's sturdy. This thing has great build quality. There are plenty of cable management options. I probably should have got the Define S because I don't use the optical drive bays, however it's nice to have the option

Cons: At the moment I can't think of any. However I have come to realize that there really is no such thing as a "silent pc." The case definitely muffles the sound, but depending on your components the PC doesn't block all sounds. This is because there are plenty of areas for air flow for the case. While this may be obvious to most, first time PC builders should take note of this.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works with NH-D15!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: I got this for my new build and got to testing the capacities of the R5. I rolled the dice and ordered an Asus Z170 S, MSI 970 ME and NH-D15 cpu cooler. I was really worried about everything fitting with the Trident Z DDR4-3200 being 44mm tall and the huge size of the D15.

Survey says: It fits! The Z170 went in, but I had to remove the center "post" and replace it with a normal mobo post. Installed the dimms and then got to work with the cooler. Originally, I had a 212 evo inside...but it didn't provide enough cooling power so I measured everything and ordered the NH-D15. I put it together and slowly started the install. The heatsink went in easily, but the fan connectors are a pain to get above the HS, but you can manage. Once I got to putting the fans in, the center went in normally, but you have to raise the rear fan by the DIMMS. There ended up being about 1/8" clearance from the DIMM and to the case side...good enough for me!

Cons: Only downside is that my rear top moduvent came with a broken clip. I went to remove it for more air and as soon as I pressed it...it fell off. No one would notice this by looking at it with it sitting on top, but it bugs me for a quality case.

4 out of 5 eggsDelivers on its Promises

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: Quiet, generally easy to work on & mostly well laid out. Cable routing makes for an uncluttered interior.

Cons: This is a large case. While convenient for adding and removing drives, the orientation of the drive cage puts some pressure on the power & data cables when the side of the case is closed since the back of the drives faces the side of the case. A few stand-off locations at the inner edge of my microATX board are absent which means you need to be careful when plugging in connections on that side of the board.

Other Thoughts: In general, I would recommend this case and am happy with my purchase. While it is not totally silent, it did cut the noise from my computer down by a large amount which is why I purchased it in the first plance. CPU temperature with the supplied fans is well within acceptable limits although I generally don't tax things as I'm mainly running MS Office applications.

5 out of 5 eggsExceedingly quiet, well-designed, flexible case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: Fractal Design has knocked one out of the park with this case. It is extremely quiet; quieter than the P183 and NZXT H2 that are its immediate predecessors in my lineup. The heavy foam is clearly doing its job, and the 140mm fans move reasonable amounts of air while still being whisper-quiet.

Assembly was simple. There are lots of cable management tie-downs, and the slots for them are large and plentiful. Rubber gaskets are included for all of the 8(!) 3.5" hard drive mounts, and the hard drive mounts can be converted for 2.5" SSDs by simply using a different set of screws. The tolerances are perfect; in all previous cases I've had to jimmy things a little bit to get either expansion cards or I/O lined up correctly. In this case, everything just worked without my worrying that I was torquing delicate electronics. By lining the HDD bays side to side, all of the 3.5" disk cables are routed to the back, where they aren't visible.

Airflow is good; with 2x140mm intake fans and 1x140mm exhaust fan running under motherboard control, running FurMark my GTX 970 tops out at 68C, and I still can't hear any noise beyond that of idle. Loading the CPU down as well results in a small increase in noise, but nothing worse than the H2's "medium" fan noise without being under load. Opening the front cover is all it takes to hear the difference the foam makes; noise goes up from near-silent to merely quiet. To give you some idea of the internal setup, I'm using an ASUS Strix GTX 970, an i5 4770, and no less than 4 spinning HDDs.

In appearance it's exactly what you see in the pictures; simple, refined, understated.

The reset switch is recessed, and so I doubt I'll accidentally end up hitting it (unlike the H2; I've hit that reset switch by accident one too many times while accessing the front panel USB). The large power button has a nice feel to it. The front panel USB and audio connectors are well separated from the power button as well.

All of the rubber grommets fit tightly to their holes, while are flexible enough that cables can easily pass through (unlike the H2, where the grommets were too flexible, and so every time I passed a cable through them, I would need to re-seat the grommet).

Extreme flexibility: you can basically turn this case into whatever you want. Move the disk bays back or remove them entirely; put fans on the top, bottom, front, and side, place a radiator on the top, bottom, or side, remove the 5.25" bays and shift the 3.5" up into their place...not that I intend to use any of that functionality. But it's there.

The dust filters on the front and bottom are both removable even if you have your case plopped into a corner somewhere. If you can open the front cover, you can remove both dust covers.

Cons: Nothing is perfect, though the R5 comes close. These are extremely minor issues that do not in any way detract from the phenomenal job Fractal Design has done.

The cable management holes at the top of the case are just a little too small to fit a CPU power cable; I had to remove the grommet to fit it through, then add the grommet back in. The fan controller switch is nearly invisible, and is behind the front cover for some reason. Not an issue for me, since I'm working under motherboard control. The blue LED isn't eye-searing (thankfully), but it is cliche, and bright enough to be irritating in a black room. I've covered it up, but I wish they would swap it out for something more diffuse and less obnoxious. The H2's gentle white lights were classier.

The front dust cover is a bit more of a pain to remove than I'd prefer. It's not terrible, it just isn't as easy as the P183's dust covers.

An integral box to put all of the extra screws would be nice, like what the P183 has (that said, I don't know where one could possibly fit without impacting the flexibility inherent in the design).

The case is heavy (but heavy sound-deadening foam is, well, heavy).

The only inexplicable choice is there is a pre-installed motherboard standoff that includes an integral peg. Trying to install the motherboard with it in place resulted in me scratching the underside of the motherboard slightly. It was easily removed and replaced with one of the normal motherboard standoffs they include and all was fine after that.

The front cover opens to something like 100 degrees; a bit less than I had expected.

Other Thoughts: This is hands-down the best-designed and quietest case I have ever bought. All of the airflow and assembly issues present in the p183 and H2 are complete non-issues in this design.

The only real issues are design choices, and so are tradeoffs. The case is considerably heavier than it might otherwise be due to the (extremely effective!) sound-deadening foam. The standoffs on the bottom of the case allow for better airflow to the PSU, but in turn make it more difficult to slide around on the ground due to the higher ground pressure.

Overall, I highly recommend this case to anyone trying to create a quiet PC. And if you don't believe me, check out SPCR.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: If you've done your research you're going to get exactly what you expect. Sturdy and extremely quite.

Cons: None that I can think of...

Other Thoughts: I wish there was a little more room for the cables between the back panel and the frame. Not really an issue, it would just be easier to take the panel on and off.

5 out of 5 eggsReally impressed with this case!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case

Pros: Intake dust filters accessible from the front, for both the front intake fans and the entire length of the bottom.
Sound proofing elements on all panels.
Thumb screws stay attached to removable parts.
Tons of room for routing cables behind the motherboard, and included velcro tiedowns and rubber grommets are a nice touch.
Black interior with white accents look amazing.
Cardboard box with all included screws has quantities and visual depiction on the side, making using the right screws a breeze.
Middle pin for holding motherboard in correct space is a nice feature.
Removeable 3.5 hard drive cage is super nice.
Plenty of zip tie downs available even on bottom of case.

Cons: Fan controller switch has three positions, and all three positions seemed identical in terms of noise and speed.
Would prefer magnetic removable covers for the top of the case instead of clip downs.
Dust filter on the top would be a nice touch.
Grommet and hole for connecting the PSU to the 8 pin CPU header is a bit small and clips the top edge of the case, making it slightly difficult to run the cable through.
Side panels are a bit hard to attach correctly.
Why not 4x USB 3.0 on the front, instead of 2x 2.0 and 2x 3.0?
Blue LED for the power/activity light didn't match the black/white color scheme I was going for, but it does look fine with plain black.
Should have shipped with 2 intake fans on the front, if for nothing else a consistent look. I appreciate being able to find the exact one I needed available here on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835352020

Other Thoughts: Matching case fans here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835352020
