5 out of 5 eggsThis case is just what I needed.

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: There are 2 USB 3.0 on top of case. I opted for the non-windowed version... While I can't look at the tidy interior, it does have space for an additional 120/140mm fan on that side of the case. There is also a lot of room behind the motherboard for cable management. I absolutely love the Velcro tiebacks. There are no 5.25" drive cages in the front to hamper any airflow and this allows for great cooling options... But (see other)...

Cons: No USB 2.0 ports on the top like my other Fractal Design case. The F4 I had had both 2.0 and 3.0 ports.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to save some money and I did a half new, half old build... I got a new motherboard, which fit perfectly and, along with my somewhat long video card, went in without a hitch. The problem that I had was with my older H55 cooler - the hoses didn't quite reach the CPU. The case is about an inch too deep. I fixed it by using an broken 120mm fan I had as a spacer... I just clipped out the fan, sanded the edges, and the 'unfanned' shroud worked perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this case, and Fractal Design support is fantastic!

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: Sleek, efficient design. I love having the hard drives mounted behind the back wall and loosing the HDD cage in the front. I don't currently water cool, but I love having a clean, open design. Loosing DVD/Bluray drives was a concern, but I rarely need them and when I do, I just hook up my USB disc drive to the front and I'm all set.

Construction feels solid. Side panels feel sturdy and heavy, partially due to the weight from sound dampening material.

Versatility. Put in your favorite radiator, reservoirs, etc. Open up the top or side panels if you like, or leave them sealed. Air cool as is or with tons of room for more fans. This case has acres of space and mounts galore for all your customizing wants.

This case is very quiet. Granted, I'm using it at stock configuration currently, so only two case fans and no over clocking, but this thing is noticeably quieter than my previous Corsair case.

Cons: None - I could try to be picky and say there could be more drive slots or more fans or something, but really I have no complaints. I love the case!

Other Thoughts: When I bought the case, the headphone and mic jacks on the front of the case were switched and using headphones in the mic jack only partially worked. I contacted the support team and Fractal and they shipped me an adapter that fixed the problem. No hassle, and the part was shipped with next day delivery! Awesome customer support!

5 out of 5 eggsFor super clean installs

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: - More than enough space for my needs
- Filters are a super plus
- Clean lines
- Solid construction
- Great for ATX and MATX boards

Cons: - Some of the mounting holes a bit off, for example, FD provides anti-vibration pads for the bottom side of power supply, but they are slightly high enough where the mounting holes relative to the supply were a bit off. I had to press down on the supply to get the screws installed. Not a biggie, but a bit irritating for an OCD like me ;)
- A bit large for me, but the new Nano S would not accommodate my Micro MB.

Other Thoughts: This is a major upgrade for me. My last case was a Lian Li back from 2007, so the PC component advancements from large HDD's to SSD's and AIO CPU coolers has really cleaned up the design of such cases. I installed an ASRock H170M Pro4 motherboard and the space with routing grommets gave me a clean design install. For now I am only using a Samsung Pro M.2 SSD for my install, but this design allows for future additions on the back side.... nice. Since this will be my utilitarian home-work PC running linux, I decided not to go with a window version.
In summary, I recommend this case for the price point.

Thanks to all for providing great reviews in helping me guide through this crowded market of cases. :)

4 out of 5 eggsNice case, but beware of cable limitations

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: Nice simple design, tons of room for fans or watercooling, moduvents are a nice concept

Cons: If you are installing multiple hard drives and SSDs, cable management behind the motherboard is challenging. Cannot use right angle SATA cables. Noise dampening material mostly a gimmick

Other Thoughts: I installed three 3.5" hard drives and two 2.5" SSDs, which is the max amount of drives you can have mounted in here. Let's just say cable management was incredibly difficult with this setup. If you don't have any 3.5" hard drives (or only have one of them), you will have much more room for cable management. However, if you're planning on filling it up like I did, you should be wary.

Also because of the way the hard drives and SSDs are mounted flush, using right angle SATA data connectors is not really an option. If you do manage to connect it, you will put too much strain on the cable or even damage your drive. I had to buy some straight SATA cables to replace a couple of my right angle ones.

I also purchased some SATA Power Y-adapters and extension cables because my power supply connectors are rather stiff. Especially with the 2 SSD mounts, you MUST have straight connectors. For example, if your power supply has a chain of like 3 or 4 SATA power connectors, the end connector may be straight but the others are often right angle (to better support a traditional hard drive cage). This does not work in this case.

This case is not much quieter than my old one (Corsair C70), but it's easier to create airflow and positive pressure. The C70 was so open that adding more fans really didn't do anything after a point. Creating positive pressure makes dust easier to control (which was quite bad with my C70). The noise dampening material on the side panels is mostly a gimmick I think. Perhaps it reduces by 1 or 2 dB, but not enough to really notice. The front panel is just a hunk of plastic with no noise dampening inside, but there is plenty of airflow even if you have 3 front 140mm fans while it is closed. I really like the magnetic dust filter on the front.

My advice if you have a lot of drives is to just get the R5 instead. I kind of wish I did, but returning it is just too much of a hassle.

5 out of 5 eggsFractal Design S Silent -- Noob proof and a great first-time case

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: Caveat - This is my attempt to build a PC. My former gamer PC was built for me by my brother, who designs both computer hardware and software. He put me onto NewEgg, as well as different YouTube channels and told me that I was going to have to learn to do it myself for my next gaming PC.

After watching a few hundred YouTube vids from NewEgg, LinusTechTips, Hardware Canucks, OC3D, JayzTwoCents and others, I finally got up the nerve to go ahead and purchase everything that I would need to build a decent gaming PC.

The list:

Define S Case
Asus Z97-Pro WiFi MB
Intel 4790K CPU
16 GB G.Skill Ripjaws X Series RAM
EVGA SuperNova P750 PS
EVGA GeForce GTX980 SC w/ACX 2.0
Back plate for GPU (GREAT recommendations from Jay and Linus here!)
Corsair H105 CPU cooler (being a total noob, I didn't want to have to contend with dealing with programming of the thing!) w/2 extra Corsair Air Series SP12 120mm fans for push/pull
Samsung 850 Evo 250 Gig SSD
Swiftech 8-Way PWM Splitter Box - SATA

From the computer which my brother had built for me, I already had two WD 1-TB Black HDDs and an Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card, as well as an incredible supply of Velcro ties and straight SATA connectors (I read about the dilemmas some people had regarding this, and was VERY glad to have them!)

So, to the build...

Not knowing what I was doing, I did the unthinkable and READ every manual which came with all of the components and watched another few dozen YouTube videos on assembling a PC from scratch. I was grounded by two different grounding straps, as the static electricity builds up to extreme levels in my area and I didn't want to fry anything.

I did the initial build/testing on the MB box, as has been fully explained in almost every How To Build vid, and the components passed with flying colors. I was very nervous about cleaning the thermal paste off the CPU (using the included CPU fan for the initial test), but the isopropyl alcohol/coffee filter method worked a treat, and everything was ready to go.

For the Corsair H105, I took the LONG screws with me and went to the Ace Hardware near the house to purchase an additional 16 screws w/washers (extras just in case), to be able to attach the fans in push/pull config, and mounted them to the upper portion of the front of the case, with the 140mm fan on the bottom (LOADS of air flow, to be certain that things would remain cool). The case allowed for VERY easy positioning of the PWM splitter on the top rear section where one of the 3 HDDs could be located, as well as routing the 5 fan cables to it. I kept the second 140mm included fan where it was originally located as the air exit fan.

The MB went in flawlessly, as Fractal Design had included everything necessary to install the MB, and there were two stand offs extra, which was a very nice touch. Also, the Power Supply was a snap to install, as the case gave me so much space in which to work. The SSD and two 1-TB HDDs were extremely easy to mount in the back of the case.

I was intimidated when it came to attaching the CPU cooling block, and was pleasantly surprised that it was a snap, again due to the room provided in the case. Next came the RAM, GPU and Sound Card. All went in without a fuss.

The "hard" part was installing all of the cables, as I wanted a "clean" build both front and back, and so it was back to the YouTube videos on cable management...

Five hours in all, I had a PC which posted perfectly. A call to Asus Customer Support put me in touch with a CSR who really knew what he was doing, and he talked me through the steps to locate all of the correct drivers, and instructed me as to the order in which to install them (he even went further and helped me with installing Windows 7 Ultimate and then overclocking the system. I know that most people want the latest and greatest, but I had been warned to go with a tried and true OS, since I was a complete noob).

The BEST thing of all of this was the fact that there was so much room in the case and that it all worked flawlessly from the very beginning. Fractal Design has created a Computer Case which is so convenient and is truly Noob Proof! I have to doubt that I could have managed this in another case, even though most people would disagree with this sentiment.

I've read the reviews, both good and bad, regarding this case, and I have to say that I am more than pleasantly surprised. Dust management is excellent, and I have yet to be able to get the CPU above 58 degrees Celsius, even when under high load. The push/pull fan set up on the radiator, coupled with the two incredibly efficient 140mm Fractal Design case fans, are remarkable in their cooling abilities and are amazingly quiet.

Kudos to Fractal Design on creating a case which is so user friendly!

Cons: Perhaps the only criticism, if it is one, would be that there are only two USB ports on the front of the case, and that the front cover is plastic, but that's just knit picking, considering the extremely good price point. The build quality of the case is excellent and I can't fault anything, to be honest.

Other Thoughts: I've waited a few months since building this system, just to be sure and certain that everything was running as it ought. I cannot say anything bad about this case. It's extremely quiet, elegantly designed, and doesn't shout for attention with garish colors or extravagant lighting pyrotechnics (I would leave that to the window version!!).

I'm happy in the extreme and will look to Fractal Design in the future when it's time to build a new PC.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Case for Water cool setup

This review is from: Fractal Design Define S Silent Computer Case

Pros: Enough room to fit all my water cooling needs. Build quality is great. Silent operation. Two fans included. Great cable management. Arrived undamaged. Love the Matte finish. No exterior logos

Cons: No USB 3.0 to 2.0 connector with case. Bit heavy once all components are all installed. Took egg off for this as I had to place another order for this adapter. At this price you would have thought they would throw one in. Not everyone is building new PCs.

Other Thoughts: Recommend this case
