5 out of 5 eggsInteresting Layout

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: 1. Spacious, especially for mITX build
2. Motherboard mounts horizontal
3. Fans placement optimizes airflow
4. Front, sides & top easily removable for ease of access
5. Lots of drive slots
6. Clever mounting hardware for drives
7. Bottom shelf allows for hiding cable tangle

Cons: 1. Plastic may scratch easily
2. VERY tight compartment for PSU
3. Some pros could easily be cons for some builds
4. Much larger than I'd imagined, pic needs a banana for scale
5. Instruction "pamphlet" printing impossibly tiny and brief
6. USB ports on right side, back a couple inches from front

Other Thoughts: I used this case for a mini ITX server build. Was originally looking to build a compact, powerful dedicated Plex server. What I soon realized was although my MoBo had 6 SATA ports, finding an ITX case to accommodate 6 drives was not easy. I'd saved this case to my wish list long ago and was notified when it came on Shell Shocker. Although I thought it would be much smaller, it has worked out quite well. I like the looks and am a sucker for flashy touches like the LED lights on top.

I was really worried about finding a PSU that would fit the compartment since there is no wiggle room. It is enclosed on all sides. Sorting through dimensions of PSUs was pretty frustrating since there is no standard protocol for listing dimensions. ( i.e. LxWxH) I would find one that looked to fit only to find out the dimensions were listed in different order than what I was looking for. Finally settled on the EVGA SuperNOVA GS 220-GS-0650-V1 80 PLUS GOLD 650 W. It's fully modular which helped a lot simplifying cable routing. You can use the dimensions of this one as a reference to ensure your PSU will fit. BTW, I set the PSU loosely in the case, ran all the power cables from the devices first, then ran them back to the loose PSU. This gave me the wiggle room I needed to fit the PSU and cables into the tight space, while keeping them neat. After everything else was done, I "rotated the threaded metal fasteners" -ed (lol, Newegg found the simpler word unacceptable) the PSU into place. I used zip ties to manage the cables above the MoBo shelf while hiding the bulk of the cables below. This kept the untidy tangle out of sight while allowing me a minimum of visible cables to keep neat. This was pretty easy with an ITX MoBo, possibly harder with mATX. I also found removal of both side panels as well as the top and front plastic panels gave excellent access to all parts of the case.
Needless to say my ITX MoBo fit with ease. I used the Noctua NH-U9S 9CPU Cooler, which is a pretty good size. I found no need to set up a push-pull fan array since the unit lines up well with the rear case fan. So far case keeps everything nice and cool. I threw in a couple of 120mm fans mounted to the top and all in all the case is pretty quiet. I'm using this box as a headless server so no ODD, which leaves me up to 4 slots for HDDs and 2 for SSDs, which is a respectable amount for my server.
The USB ports are a bit inconvenient and the case is much wider than I would of thought. It just barely fit the shelf I had earmarked for it. Of course I could have whipped out a tape measure before buying it, so that's more of a comment than complaint. The instruction pamphlet can be deciphered with a magnifying glass and an intense eye for detail, but they certainly could have done better with it. Pretty minor issues really, the price more than compensates.
Good case, easy build. I'm fairly experienced, but I would think most people would find this case pretty easy to build with.
Color me a happy camper.

2 out of 5 eggsDissapointed :(

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: The metal side paint was good, packed well, parts were there.

Cons: There was some kind of hazy looking spots on the black plastic parts, making the finish look spotty. Because the plastic is super shiny they stand out when you look at it from an angle. If it were not in noticeable places,(side of the top, and front) i'd probably have kept it. Some of the "spots" had minor scuffing by them like there was an attempt to remove them. But, i guess Deepcool decided to pass it along anyway. I tried a small spot at the back with windex and a low lint soft eyeglass cloth, and i see why they gave up trying to get it removed. I can't comment on the functionality or wiring as I never installed anything other than mounting the Power Supply before I noticed the cosmetic defects.
FYI this case is almost as tall as my Full tower Cooler Master Case and about 25% wider. This is in the specs, but just to give you an idea. Thought it would be fun to build, but I'm just going to "punt" and stick with my Cooler Master.
I feel my "egg" rating is generous.
-1 Egg_Appearance
-1 Egg_QA failure/Ship it anyway
-1 Egg_Because I have to return it

Other Thoughts: No, i would not purchase this again.
No, would not recommend it to a friend.
I guess the fact it appeared someone saw the defect, tried to fix it,failed and shipped it anyway, hoping someone would accept it, was the worst part. I mean face it....if you are buying this case, it's probably for the looks, not it's ease of building in.
Now i get to deal with a RMA.....Glad i bought it at NEWEGG and not somewhere else.

5 out of 5 eggsDarth Vader Edition

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: Fit and finish is excellent. These are heavy duty materials easy to work with.

Cons: It didn't come with a Star Wars sticker!

Other Thoughts: I have owned the yellow window version but jumped to get this on shell shocker. Build these out in every flavor for that perfect game flow.

4 out of 5 eggssteam castle case

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: Very good positioning for parts. The motherboard tray is horizontal, which is awesome. Also the fans are setup up so that they blow down and then you have one in the front pushing in also and one in the back pulling out. This works very well for maximized airflow in the case. It also has a fan controler with variable settings for the back and top fans, which is great!

Cons: Not many, although thew wiring for the fan controller is kind of cumbersome and lines up in such a way that it gets in the way of the side panel.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this case offers a lot. Just keep in mind it's for micro atx and mini ITX.... not standard ATX motherboards. Also the slot for the PSU is kind of smallish, so no extended length power supplies because the HDD tray in front of it is riveted in place.

4 out of 5 eggsFunky Steam Castle

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: Excellent size, it was a perfect fit for my needs. It looks great as well, and the materials are of good quality. Its quiet and runs cold and silent

Cons: Cable management is going to be horrid. Zip ties is the answer. Manual is worse than something from Ikea, i suggest finding a how to guide on YouTube if you are new to building PC's

Other Thoughts: I got it on sale for $80 here. For that price i think its a bargain, I am really happy with it.

4 out of 5 eggsLike it, but it has limitations...

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: - Aesthetically pleasing - Not your typical tower.
- Accommodated 10.1" GPUs - Two of them.
- Comes with 2 fans (front and rear) and room for 2 more (top). Can accommodate single and double reservoir liquid CPU cooling* fans and has passthru holes for external cooling.
- On demand light show - Steady R/G/B/Off or and variable speed fade. The button/dial combo on the side cycles modes and controls fade speed (not fan speed, as other reviewers have complained about).
- HDD mounts are easy to use.

Cons: - Very tight for an mATX build.
- Limited cable management.
- Internal header cables are too short.
- Must remove upper 5.25"/3.5" drive cages to use double reservoir liquid cooling.
- Limited to using power supplies under 160mm.
- Controls and USB are in the right side panel, instead of the front, forcing you to disconnect header connections to remove the panel. Using a flash drive is awkward and requires side clearance to fit.
- HDD LED is ridiculously bright and distracting.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I really like this case. Installation of components required more forethought as to the order of installation than a standard ATX build. I ended up backtracking multiple times and changing the order to get things to fit. I ended up removing the 3.5" drive cage completely, moved the rear fan to the top and added a second fan on top as well. Both fans are set to exhaust. My liquid cooling is mounted where the rear fan was, and set up as a push/pull intake. CPU temps have stayed below 45C and GPU temps have been running around 75C under full game load.

1 out of 5 eggsOverall, bad

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: Able to fit a Hyper 212 EVo with 158mm height, still with more room on top. Lot of fan to keep the case cool.

Cons: Cable management is horrible, took time the getting side pane fit with cable popping out. A ITX motherboard would fit this case more better then MicroAtx

Other Thoughts: New-egg won't refund or replace Item if damage watch out when putting it together. When I put the Plastic 2.5 drive-bays in, one clips was bent a little. Trying to take out a the flimsy PLASTIC without braking it. So now stuck with case, New-egg won't back there buyer's if problems come head.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: - Lots of space
- Multi-color/pattern LEDs at top
- Space for a 240mm radiator
- Has 4 total areas for fans (3 x 140mm, 1 x 200mm)
- Decent cable management
- Good airflow
- Unique design

Cons: - Little bit wide for a mATX case
- Newegg advertised two 120mm fans, mine came with one and a 200mm
- Could use another slot for another optical drive or fan controller

Other Thoughts: It's a really nice case from DeepCool, however they need to fix there false advertising. This could be on Newegg's part.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat to look at, NO CABLE MANAGEMENT

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: Great looking case, the LED's light up really well, installation is pretty straightforward, and has never had a problem overheating.

Cons: A little on the loud side, bulkier than you'd expect, yet, not much room to work with. And the cable management is absolutely horrible.

Other Thoughts: The fan it comes with is a bit loud, but it's not so bad that you'll wake anyone off. Just a bit bothersome. PSA; don't get a big graphics card with this case. Length-wise, it'll fine. But it just barely clears in the height department. It was kind of awful putting a 290x in there.

Also, don't get the one with the window; there's so little opportunity for cable management, it just looks like a rat's nest by the time all is said and done. The case has a hole to feed the power supply cables to the motherboard, and that's it. On the plus side, you might not be able to see it, considering the graphics card will take the entire view anyways.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case and company

This review is from: DEEPCOOL STEAM CASTLE M (BLACK) MATX / ITX Unique Steam Punk Style with120mm Fan(Front) + 120mm Fan (Rear) + 4 Magic Controllable LED Lights (Top)

Pros: This case was much larger than expected, with plenty of room to work with when mounting my MOBO. I really like the top mounting compartments for the radiator, which is covered by an external plastic casing with glowing "exhaust ports". A nice aesthetic and practical touch to hide the radiator.

Cons: Despite the size of the case, the metal wall separating the hard-disk bays from the PSU compartment makes it difficult to string wires from the PSU to the motherboard. It would have been far better to get rid of the wall entirely which arguably serves no real purpose other than for more organised cable management.

Other Thoughts: The company also provides excellent customer service. When I had to replace the PCB on the side of the case because I accidentally broke off an audio jack inside the audio socket, Deepcool in what can only be described as a leap of faith, paid for and sent me a replacement board before I paid for the item and shipping!

Would definitely buy from them in the future.
