5.25in. Touchscreen Fan Controller

Introducing the Sentry 2, a full system fan controller with an advanced touchscreen interface. Sentry 2 easily installs in a 5.25in. bay and is compatible with any fan that uses voltage control. The innovative touch screen features ultra fast selection and response time and displays all pertinent info including temperature readout in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Sentry 2 allows users to control up to five fans with the option for manually tuning individual fan speeds or letting the automatic controls take over to correspond to a specific temperature. The controller's advanced functionality sounds an alarm to alert the user should the temperature exceed a preset amount and stores saved settings even after it is turned off. Designed to maximize efficiency, the Sentry 2 supports 10W per channel and creates less heat than traditional temperature displays.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Looks nice.
Easy to customize.
Set up was easy.
When it worked it was great.

Cons: After about six months of use, any time the internal temperature of the case starts going up the controller cuts power to the fans!

If you nudge the wires leading to the fan it typically will regain connection, however that is not a long term fix as it always goes back out a bit later. Basically when you need the fans on the most, they turn off. Cannot rely on them to stay on.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Looks good, easy to install, and easy to use. Give you the ability to control 5 fans either automatically or manually. Provides temperature at five points in your case. Can be set for either Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Cons: Instructions are not very detailed. There are a couple of videos online that will explain the operation of the controller. I would recommend watching them.

Other Thoughts: There are some small "quirks" with this controller that should be in the instructions yet are not. For instance like to change between functions you have to press and hold the button for 3 seconds. This makes sense once you are aware of how it works. It would have been nice to have this information in the instructions.

While the controller provides a temperature at five point in your case. To see the temperature you must have the fan selected, the controller does not provide an average temperature.

As others have noted the the beeping is quite loud, but it can be turned off by pressing the power button shortly. Once again this is not in the instructions but in the online videos.

5 out of 5 eggsWatch Out for Nosey Power Supplies

Pros: Works good. Can Place probes where you want them. Comes with extra probes. I like these things.

Cons: Does not work well with noisy power supplies.

Other Thoughts: I bought several of these. I had some where the temperature reading bounced around all over the place. I RMA'd a couple of them. I got to thinking that maybe I had a noisy power supply (EA-650). I changed out the power supplies, and now the temperature readings are rock stable. So if you have temperature reading that bounce all over, then it is most likely a noisy power supply. The units that I RMA'd probably had nothing wrong with them. I wonder what else those noisy power supplies were doing.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed, But Not Giving Up

Pros: I didn't really want a touch screen interface, but was pleasantly surprised. It is very responsive with the lightest touches. The interface is very straightforward and easy to understand. It's a little too cartoonish for me, but it's still a sensible layout.

Cons: Fan controller outputs four (4) and five (5) were dead on arrival. At least the other three functioned normally giving me a chance to see how the unit's operation worked.

Other Thoughts: My PC case and components are already safely cool, but I didn't have any ability to slow my case fans down and reduce noise. I bought this with the sole purpose of running the fans in manual mode and slowing them down thereby reducing noise. I had no need to implement the thermal sensors, so I can't comment on how the unit performs running in Auto mode using the sensors.

Operating the fans in manual mode was simple and straightforward. My only complaint is you can only control the fan between 40% and 100%. If you try and go below 40% it shuts the fan off. Minor complaint.

I will be sending this back to Newegg for an exchange; if I get better results the second time around I will edit this review and give it a better rating.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!!!

Pros: Relatively easy to install, good price compared to similar fan controllers, has 5 thermal senors and 5 fan connectors which help determine which areas of the case need more air when, very responsive touch screen

Cons: Not exactly compatible with the Cooler Master HAF X because the tool free design leaves half of the fan controller loose.

Other Thoughts: Be sure when installing to have the NZXT logo on the top otherwise the screw holes won't line up. The beeping whenever you use the touch screen are kind of annoying but not too bad.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, one thing wrong.

Pros: Very bright screen, easy to figure out, love the temperature sensors.

Cons: If a fan is put on 0%, It will spin very slowly, and make noise.

Other Thoughts: I never put my fans on zero, so it does not really matter to me that they don't shut off all the way.

2 out of 5 eggsNeed to Revise My Previous Review

Pros: Looks good on the front of the case. Works well when they work. Can control 2 pin fans.

Cons: Previously, I gave 5 eggs and a grand review of this item. I must of gotten lucky on the first one that i bought because I bought three more of them, but it has not gone so well. Of the three that I bought, I have had to RMA 2 of them back to Newegg (not Newegg's fault at all). The two units that I have returned have temperature readings that jump all over the place. The temperature keeps changing as much as 10 degrees C in just a couple of seconds. That is not acceptable. Now I have to pay shipping back, and that has got me upset. I did pick a couple up on sale, so maybe I will have the regular price into them after the RMA shipping costs.

Other Thoughts: I thought that maybe I had a noisy power supply for one of the RMAs, but when I got the new unit back, the temperature is only jumping around a couple of degrees, and it is not too bad. Is stable on some of the channels. Before I send the second one back (today), I am going to pull all of the temp probes out and put them in a thermal insulator and see if the temperature readings still jump all over that place, Since thermocouples have a low signal output, they might be picking up some noise, but i doubt that will do any good because when something is not working right, it is not working right. It's too bad that there is trouble with some of these as they are pretty and have the potential to work good. Everything is so cheaply made these days. Hot glue and just cheaply made. Why can't they put a few extra dollars into the design and quality and make a better product? If I had to do it all over again, I would have went with something else. I may yet return them all and go with something else. I wish that they would all work as well as the first one that i bought.
