Ever seen one of those computer cases with the LCD status reports and wished you were as well-informed? Or maybe you were just suffering from gadget-envy.

Well, nMediaPC makes this handy display that lets you be informed of your computer status just like those much more expensive computer cases. Comes with an attractive black mounting rack, and the drivers are downloadable from their website. It fits handily into a five and a quarter inch drive bay and hooks up to a USB port. What will it display? More than I have room to talk about, but it can tell you about CPU usage, temperature, fan speeds, what music track your CD is playing . . . check out their website for more.

Whether it's something you need, or just a handy item you could use, decide for yourself if this is the one for you. We'll still be waiting when you're done.

5 out of 5 eggsquestion

Pros: This is a question to owners only: I only want this to display a clock and maybe the date, so does it have that ability? I will install this in a media PC and would also like to know if the display is readable from 15-16ft. away.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little LCD

Pros: Simple device that plugs into a USB header and molex plug, displays what you want it to via the software on nmediapc's website or other software designed for it, like LCD smartie. Looks great, bright but not hard to read, sits flush and overall is a fine product that does what you need it to.

Cons: 4-pin USB header connector. Why not just use the good old fashioned 9-pin and save folks confusion? Not a make or break deal though.

2 out of 5 eggsLooks cool for about a year

Pros: It gives a nice flavor to your built, nice custom fields

Cons: Hassle to get drivers from the internet, software takes a few moments to load, display is so dim after a year I can barely see what it say

Other Thoughts: It looked cool in the beginning, now a year later I can't see a thing on the display from 2 feet away

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: -astoundingly easy to set up
-very descriptive and complete instructions
-all features work flawlessly
-pretty LCD
-surprising high-quality appearance to front facade
-price is perfect for what you get

Cons: -unless using custom software, this device will apparently only recognize Windows Media Player
-no included software, but that is because it is constantly being updated (WIN 8 drivers are out now,) so this is actually more like a Pro...

Other Thoughts: Don't listen to fools who write bad reviews ... this is a GREAT product. All you have to do is read the instructions. This is not hard people. It bothers me that noobs will buy something like this and expect it to be a cake-walk, but that said, it kinda is :P All you have to do is plug it into any USB interface on your mobo, and then go to nMEDIAPC's website and download two drivers, reboot and your are DONE!! Apparently that is too difficult for some people...

I was worried at first. I have never bought anything form nMEDIAPC, and this thing looked questionable. But, I am really glad I took the plunge because this product is a perfect edition to my HTPC. Usually I wait a few weeks before reviewing, but I was too impressed to hold back my praise :)

4 out of 5 eggsWorks and cool, but pretty trivial.

Pros: I wanted something to fill in my extra optical drive bay that wasn't a disc drive or a fan controller. I thought this would be a cool thing to have and show off as well as have to see some information (PC use, Network usage, etc) from across the room quickly.

The physical install is easy, just make room, slide, and screw it in.

The software install is easy. Simply download the driver, restart, install the program, and restart again.

The program has a wide range of data to present from network usage, WMP info, audio levels, system information etc. You can also use it to setup an alarm clock and choose your desired sound.

The molex connector is flexible and easy to route.

Cons: Unless your drives are flush with your PC, don't bother. My PC has some furniture in front of the drives, so I have about an inch of plastic surrounding it. Makes it hard to see from my seat. My fault for not realizing that.

The plastic is very cheap and brittle. You could probably snap it in two with your bare hands.

The software will not let your PC sleep.

The brightness cannot be adjusted with the default software.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't familiar with my mobo's internal USB pin layout, so I had to order a USB A to USB internal 4 pin IDC connector in order to use it with my USB A internal connector. But that is something unique to me.

Personally, I think it is a little trivial after the initial wow factor wears off.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat idea, but won't let my PC sleep

Pros: Customizable. Information on your case where it's easy to see. Gives the case a cool custom look

Cons: Doesn't allow HTPC to sleep :(

Other Thoughts: I installed this in my nMediaPC 6000B case and had it all set up and working great, then I noticed that my HTPC was always on. I did some research and this seems to be a common problem. I gave up trying to figure it out as my HTPC is set up in a room that's not used much so I just uninstalled the hardware and removed the software.

Wish there was a fix

Pros: cheap, clean crisp display, bright, easy to install

Cons: the oem software that you have to download

Other Thoughts: i used the original software for a while and noticed that it kinda stinks so i tried the lcd smartie and the screen with that program is awsome, i had to find the proper plugin for it but no prob, and i use it with speed fan its great, i just use mine for cpu and mem usage and to monitor my temps

4 out of 5 eggsMy Second Review For This - Useful Info

Pros: Yes... this does use old software... however, it still does a respectable job of what it's intended to do.. and that's to display info. To use this, go to the website in the instructions and DOWNLOAD two files. The first is CDM20600 which is the driver. You install that one first. The second file you need is called M.Play Home Center Setup, which is the software. After you install it both files, you MUST click on the notification icon next to the clock (not the desktop icon) to start up the program. Then you can begin with the customization of the unit. You have two ways to really use this. You can manually switch to the display setting yourself (Winamp, Time, sound, etc.) OR you can set it to AUTO USER and it will rotate thru settings you set yourself and display each one for as long as you want. This is the setting that is the best and it's fully automatic meaning if you start playing a media file it will switch and display that by itself while play and switch back to auto.

Cons: Yes, the software is old... but it's very easy to figure out and use. You have 2 lines... so you type in commands on what you want on each line. There are commands listed at the bottom for each action that you can use and type in so you don't have to memorize anything. Some users commented that their unit did not work or wasn't detected by the software. I know exactly why that happened. They didn't plug it in correctly into the USB header on the motherboard. The head on this unit is 4 female pins. A USB header has 9 or 10 pins sticking up. To install this correctly, all you have to do is make sure the two grounds are lined up. You can't telll what that is on your motherboard unless you look closely at the markings or read the user manual for your motherboard. Other people just plug it in anywhere. In other words, there are 4 ways to insert this but only 1 is the correct way.. and some people plugged it in upside down or on the wrong set of pins.

Other Thoughts: I discovered an issue people might have and will give you a way of resolving it. It's with the AUTO USER setting. I discovered if you have a multimedia keyboard like a logitech G510 that uses Windows Sideshow, it will cause the AUTO USER feature to not work. To resolve this problem, just go to your desktop search and type in Sideshow. When you get there, just uncheck the boxes your keyboard uses. It won't affect your keyboard at all. That is how you fix that problem. You can also Auto Hide the MHC window that pops up when you start up Windows. Just create a shortcut to MHC in your Startup Folder at Start Button/Programs. Then go to properties and on shortcut/run change to Minimized. If you have access to the startup command (like Tuneup Utilitites Startup Manager) you can just add the command there to auto minimize the program to taskbar.. I'm not sure but I think it's: -h but don't quote me on that... I can't remember
