5 out of 5 eggsLove this stuff!!

Pros: This stuff cannot be beat when building a super quiet rig. Recently used this stuff on my brothers new build. I bought a lower end case w/PSU. It was an all steel case, which sound like a tin can sometimes. Just tap on the outside of one of these cheap cases, the sound just sends chills down my spine I can't stand it. But after lining nearly the whole interior of the case with this stuff, the tin hollow sound is easily defeated. Instead of a "tink" sound, it's more of a "thud" sound now. Feels like a solid build now.

The kit comes with two very large sheets that was enough for me to line up a standard ATX case. I cut the stuff up to my liking and lined up nearly the entire interior of this case.

Cons: It can be a bit smelly, but it dissipates after some time. Not bad enough to take an egg away

Other Thoughts: I swear by this stuff. You want to do a quality build, use it!

4 out of 5 eggsif you're looking to buy this, it's what you'd expect

Pros: -it is easy to use and cut
-does what it's suppose to do (i think at least)
-black like my case
-has the wonderful side effect of helping reduce vibration slightly

Cons: -hard to remove
-effects are only marginal
-difficult to install in some cases
-one time adhesive

Other Thoughts: -if you're looking at this, then you are probably just trying to make up for all those fans you put in. dont get me wrong it'll help.... but only a very small amount. which may be what you're looking for.
-i wonder if this would work well if i coated the walls of my room with it...

2 out of 5 eggsDon't expect much

Pros: The glue sticks well; enough foam to cover most mid-tower cases.

Cons: The glue sticks well... too well, now I can't take it off. This foam is pretty thin and doesn't absorb much noise. It tears easily too after it's installed in the case. The glue also smells very strong. I usually leave my machine running until it goes to sleep. For at least a week after I installed this, I had to do full shut downs because the smell was giving me a headache.

Other Thoughts: I recently got a silent case. The foam in that case is definitely superior to this dinky stuff. I bought this to try and quiet down my Lancool and although it helped, it wasn't worth the effort.

If you want to knock off a couple of db then this stuff is for you. Just don't expect much more.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy purchase

Pros: Lots of foam for the money, looks great, layerable and flexible.

Cons: Non-removable (tears and leaves residue behind), so be sure of your application first. Thin.

Other Thoughts: Put my HTPC into a G5 case and used this foam extensively throughout. Compared to other brands I've used (I'm a fan of silent computing), I'm impressed for the value. Understand that this is thinner, but layerable and has a clean, uniform look in addition to decent sound dampening properties. I'll be using this extensively in future case customization projects.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Used this to quiet a cheap Fractal Design Core 1000 case. Cut up squares for the side panels and top and still have a little left over. Has definitely reduced the noise of my case to bearable levels in the evenings. Good stuff.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsThe foam for the advanced PC user

Pros: Amazing stuff, feels like memory foam, perfect size to fit in any case. I would have painted the foam surface white with hobby paint so that it matches my Silverstone SG05 SFF white case, but the black looks like darkness of outer space and I think that is appropriate!

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: If you paint it a white or related it would look cool to match the interior panel color, but darkness of space is a awesome place to display your hardware since a lot of it crash landed on earth.

5 out of 5 eggsBigger than specified

Pros: The dimensions are NOT 21 inches by 15 inches. I measured it to be 582 mm by 382mm (1-2mm bigger than the packaging specifies). This comes out to 22.9 inches by 15 inches, for a total of an extra 57 square inches of extra area. If you planned carefully for 21x15, then you are in for a positive surprise. The other product details are accurate.

The density is such that it takes a reasonable amount of effort to squish the foam to half its thickness. So, its more dense than typical egg-crate foam, but less dense than a foam block. As such, this open-cell foam will do a decent job of reducing high pitch noises, but is not necessarily what you would mount a vibrating object to.

One package should be enough for a mid-tower case. If you want to cover the top, bottom, back panel, part of the mother board tray, and front bezel of a full tower, you would probably need the second package. For my Corsair 900D, I went for three packages, and that will be enough but not with generous extra.

Cons: The package indicates the item was packaged 3 years ago. While the foam does not appear to have degraded, that is the only thing I could think to enter as even a potential negative.

Other Thoughts: It should be moderately temperature resistant, but I would still be cautious about lining areas around the CPU and video card. I have not experienced a horrible odor from this product, but I'm not going to test it too far. If you should wish to remove it one day, I would recommend 99% isopropyl alcohol from a drug store or acetone; but I cannot see why anyone would remove it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you very much for purchasing SilverStone! The "Issue date" listed on the packaging is for when the design of the packaging was issued (we designed the packaging of this product 3 years ago). So that was not the date of when the product was manufactured. All SF01 for sale in North America now were all manufactured within a year.

5 out of 5 eggsas expected

Pros: this foam has drastically altered the sound off my case fans. i have a total of 6 case fans in my antec p193. all off a fan controller. the case is significantly quieter. so much more quieter i know notice my wireless router makes a hissing noise when uploading. werid huh? no the noisiest part of my room is my router '-.- gonna move it...or maybe just wrap the rest of the foam i have around it :D there's a whole pad left. i wasn't expecting a whole lot...but there is plenty to spare. consider i'm using a massive antec p193 case for this application.

Cons: it does give off a smell. hardly. just enough to barely notice it on "hot" days or heavy gaming. it's not entirely bad. it's like new car smell...but for a computer. i don't mind it. others might.

Other Thoughts: i found using scissors was A LOT easier than a hobby knife or exacto knife. the exacto knife just shredded my cuts. i ditched it and just used some nice sharp scissors. works better, i thought. there was plenty of "give" when dealing with the application. just think of it like carpentry.

5 out of 5 eggsYou can't expect complete silent

Pros: It does reduce the case metal door vibration noises that is all I noticed and also that is what annoys me until I had these.

Cons: Normal that these material to absorb heat. Just make sure you have enough ventilation

Other Thoughts: You can't expect to silent off fans, that is not the purpose of these materials.

4 out of 5 eggsSlight Noise Reduction

Pros: Two very large sheets. Forgiving adhesive allows for re-seating. Easily sticks to metal, plastic. Can hide wires under this foam to make case innards look more tidy. Black color with no words/names/logos on it. One package of this is enough to cover a mid tower case. Modestly reduces high pitch noise (see Other).

Cons: Thickness of sound dampening foam determines effectiveness -- 7mm would be better than 4mm. Once adhesive dries, it is difficult to remove. Easiest to apply to a bare case-- before adding components. Foam acts as a slight insulation, so make sure you have good airflow in your case. If you go to a rock concert and stand in front of the speakers while holding each pad in front of your ears, you are still going to go deaf -- this product will NOT make a noisy pc quiet on its own. See Other.

Other Thoughts: Philosophy of Quiet PCs/How To:
The first step in a quiet pc is always the fans. Even expensive cases come with noisy fans. Super high volume fans are very noisy. And counter-intuitively, super high airflow does NOT make your PC run any cooler than moderate and unobstructed airflow. You might want to read that previous sentence again. Noctua NF-S12B are the best of the best when it comes to silent airflow, 56.9m3/h at 6.9dBA is unbeatable.

Sound bounces off hard surfaces. Open-cell foam captures sound waves, which is the basic principal behind acoustic dampening coverings. Also, sound bounces off corners, so rounded corners are better than 90 degree angles.

Apply this foam to all the flat surfaces of your case, cutting the foam so that it goes 1cm or so under your motherboard. Make sure you also get the inside panel of the case that faces the CPU Cooler (cut around the window if you have one and want to maintain the pretty view). Sound bounces, so don't forget to cover objects such as the back of your DVD.

After the case is lined, you can round off the corners: At the corners, mark off ~2cm above and below the corners, next you are going to want to place something in the corner like pencil or rolled up piece of foam (you want a curve, not a 90degree angle), then cut and apply a second layer of acoustic foam to round out corners.

If you bought quiet fans, your noisiest component is going to be your graphics card (or if water cooled, the pump). Most (air) CPU-Coolers are a standard size and can be fairly easily replaced, expensive CPU-Coolers usually have PWM fans with the speed controlled by the system board and low noise adapters included. So double check whatever your fans are pointing at and make sure you have some foam covering everywhere you can.
