5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Windows 8/7/XP - Works
Linux (Ubuntu/Debian/Red Hat) - Works

I have used so many models of this product over the years and this one has always worked.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsBaud Problems

Pros: It worked fine for serial mice

Cons: Assuming that it wasn't horribly mangling my 57600 baud connection wasted several hours.

The driver certainly didn't help dissuade me from this obviously flawed assumption; it even implied that it could handle higher bauds.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes exactly what I wanted it to!

Pros: Adds another serial port to a PC.
Works exactly like it's supposed to!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this coverter to add a seconds serial port to my PC for troubleshooting networking equipment. I installed the XP drivers, plugged in the cable and both HyperTerminal and Putty work great with this cable. No problems at all. Yay! The cable I got was white, for those of you who are really expecting a blue one, just a FYI

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with ESXi

Pros: Great solution to add a serial port to VMs running under VMWare EXSi 5. VMWare doesn't like add in serial port cards, but this works great.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid - BSOD

Pros: Inexpensive, works out of the box.

Cons: BSODs. Using the device for the last 2 weeks on Win 7 x64, I have had two blue screens with high serial data loads, and one time during serial device reset. I have not 100% confirmed the USB driver was the cause; however, the blue screens occurred when interacting with the serial device and the PC has not had a BSOD in over a year.

Other Thoughts: I suspect the BSODs are dependent on serial errors and/or heavy load. Some serial devices might work fine. For example, when doing basic serial logging overnight; I have not had a problem.

5 out of 5 eggsperfect

Pros: Takes about 2 minutes to install drivers from CD. The adapter is then ready for use. Excellent Win 7 64 bit support, which is a deficit of some other comparable units. Good price break--all of these used to be $40 to $50 items.

Cons: No cons. Does its job flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: If you are tired of maintaining an old computer just to talk to old serial (9 pin) devices then this is for you.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh quality

Pros: Works very well, and is built well also. Has a good sturdy feel to it, definitely not built cheaply. Very simple to install and get up and running.

Cons: A bit pricey.

Other Thoughts: If you're stuck with old serial devices and have no COM port to connect them to, you need the TU-S9.

For anyone with a Uniden scanner looking for a serial to USB convertor, it's worth noting that the TU-S9 uses the exact same Prolific chip as Uniden's own USB-1 cable. Save the money and buy this instead of the USB-1 cable, and make use of the free cable that's included with the scanner. It's the exact same thing in the end!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Win7 Pro 64

Pros: It works with Win7 64 bit.
Connected with an old serial medical product that is not manufactured to any spec.
It worked fine using the included driver.
The reason I had to purchase this item is because the last one I had does not have any Win7 support.

Cons: Windows does not install the driver automatically.
It's a serial port, a dinosaur, it should not be that difficult to produce a USB serial class device and use the Win7 built in driver support.
Meaning if it installed without any OEM driver it would be perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsworks well with windows 7 64 bit

Pros: got this to connect my laptop to an RS-485 modbus line for testing a micro-controller. needed the TU-S9 plus a separate RS-485 to RS-232 converter, but to my great surprise it all worked on the first try.

Cons: its not free?
