5 out of 5 eggsCheap, works great

Pros: Works flawlessly at both ends of a cable as a serial console for Linux at a 115200 baud rate.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well but pretty flimsy

Pros: Works really well. Super cheap. Can buy 2 for the price of others (which I did to have one standard and one crossover!).

You can get the latest driver from the products source here, wch.cn: http://wch.cn/download/list.asp?id=65

Note: If you are lucky, some windows 7 64-bit installs find the driver from windows update. One of my computers did, the other didn't, and they were both Win7 64-bit. Even so, the driver listed above should be newer.

Cons: Flimsy. Easy to mod it to work though. I easily pulled the plastic shell apart by hand. I moved the DB-9 connector to the outside of the plastic shell and used the supplied standoffs and finger screws to screw it tight. Had to super glue the shell back together. Now it mimic's a real serial port and is solid physically.

Other Thoughts: I use this at work as a computer analyst who likes to get his hands dirty. I connect it to my SAN Cisco core and edge switches for maintenance, along with all our mid-tier storage, and anything else that I need to connect to via serial ports. My work rig usually consists of this device and a DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter to connect to RJ-45 serial ports, though I have other rigs for other serial port types.

5 out of 5 eggsLinux and Windows XP sees it

Pros: Fedora 17 sees it as ttyUSB0
Windows XP 64-bit sees it as COM3

The driver for Windows XP is on the CD in the R340 directory. Launch HL-340.EXE and when the window opens with INSTALL/UNINSTALL/CANCEL (don't click anything), plug the adapter in so that the install wizard starts. Guide the wizard to the C:\CH341SER directory.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I'm trying to get it so talk to a Cisco 3550 switch using a home made RJ45 to DB9 cable. My problem is probably not due to this adapter, but either the home made cable or the switch. The switch is a government hand-me-down that has been wiped. It doesn't POST.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your time and money

Pros: none

Cons: Couldn't find drivers for XP 32 or Vista 64. Rosewill's site says it only supports Vista 32.

I have bought other products where people are complaining that the drivers are not included and just download them somewhere without too much trouble but wasted too much time searching for these ones. Also, very cheap construction and looks like the casing would break/fall apart easily. Trying a SIIG adapter instead.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Worked immediately in Ubuntu Linux 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). Was connected as /dev/ttyUSB0. Tested with C-Kermit.

Cons: DE-9 connector case is rather flimsy. Very easy to pop apart.

5 out of 5 eggs3 yrs later and still works!

Pros: Works well with Radio Shack digital multimeter #22-812. I got this adapter to work with my VAIO PCG-V505DC2 laptop on WinXP SP3.

Cons: The serial plug was too big for the multimeter connection. Not a fault of Rosewill. I had to "shave off" part of the serial plug to get it to fit into the multimeter's connection for a secured fit.

Other Thoughts: None. This adapter works great with the Radio Shack program and multimeter for computer interface of visually seeing digital readings for data storage.

5 out of 5 eggsGood cable

Pros: Does what it says it does.

Cons: Who would ever need this thing? Came free with a card reader I bought. Will keep it for a rainy day but come on. Just another one of a kind cable I cant bring myself to throw away.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks For Our Needs

Pros: Small, Light wight, and it works for my needs in my Work Study for Cisco Routers and Switches ISO

Cons: Can be a bit of a pin to start up, my machine didn't recognize it at first and messed with the mini DVD this came with to see if acceptable drivers were in it. I finally had to mess with the device in Device Manager and then it finally installed itself.

Other Thoughts: only have used it for Cisco ISO console and using Putty Terminal program this combo has worked without fail so far and have had it work on 25 plus different Routers and Switches.
