3 out of 5 eggsBombed.

Pros: Promising.

Cons: Bombed. I suppose it was rather TOO flimsy.

The connections particularly...

Other Thoughts: I think to find a more sturdy simpler port without the doo dads and all. I will keep looking.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent controller, okay design.

Pros: -The best USB3.0 adapter you will find for the price
-Included A/C adapter can power pretty much any HDD (Those that do not include one can only power 2.5" drives)
-Small! This will easily fit into a laptop bag.
-Quick transfer speeds
-The A/C adapter's plug disconnects for easy storage
-Includes sleeves for a 2.5" and 3.5" drive to mount the adapter properly
-Will read any HDD that has been formatted in a fashion that the OS understands.
-The logo glows blue as an access indicator

Cons: -The form factor comes at a bit of a cost. The plug will slip out of a non-sleeved HDD EXTREMELY easily, unless you turn it upside down and never touch it.
-The included USB3.0 wire is thick. Normally this is good, but it's so thick that it has a tendency to push the adapter out of the HDD.
-The A/C plug is required to power laptop drives, despite the fact that they're more than capable of working off of USB power
-Transfer speeds with some drives can be sporadic, but it's not a common problem.

Other Thoughts: It's an excellent adapter, but it would have been nice if a cable to extend the SATA data/power plug had been included. I would have actually given it 5 stars that way, as this device's biggest problem really is that it doesn't grip the drive it's connected to properly.

Desktop HDD's don't get any sort of cooling when they're not sitting in a tower, so you'll want to monitor their temperature carefully if they're a high-RPM hard drive.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised, but check your USB settings

Pros: Small, allows quick disk swap for tasks like wiping or cloning harddrives. No messing around with screws or sharp metal contraptions.

It supports USB 3.0 (and comes with a USB 3.0 cable).

External power supply allows power hungry 3.5" HDDs to be connected.

Cons: Loose connector. There is no locking mechanism, so once the connector is plugged in, and the switch is turned on, I am afraid to touch anything.
Insufficient documentation, and lack of web site support (the model # cannot even be found on the Rosewill website). I had a problem on my Windows 7 computer where USB drive would disconnect and reconnect every 2 seconds. I almost RMA'd the item. I had to do some research first, and it turns out USB power saving must be disabled in power settings. This was neither in the manual nor on Rosewill web site.

As for the uneven space between the device and the drive, if you put the drive on its back, there is no problem. So that's not a big issue for me.

Other Thoughts: Not all wiping software works on USB external drives. I was able to use this with Eraser.

I have tried several Harddrives in different sizes/make/model and they all worked great (they were all less than 1TB)

5 out of 5 eggsAn IT must!

Pros: This is a cheap, fast, and awesome setup for retrieving data from hard drives. I have been using this a lot to backup user info on machines that have completely died and clone images to new hard drives. This has saved my company time and money!

Cons: As explained in previous reviews, the adapter will not quite line up evenly with the hard drive. The kit does provide you with a rubber case for the drive to lift it up for even line up.

My solution to this has been to either flip the hard drive up side (usually for quick jobs) or let the adapter just hang off the table while connected to the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly

Pros: Works great

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Use it primarily to clone HDDs and to copy large backup files. This is a much nicer unit than some of the cheaper stuff out there.

4 out of 5 eggsRuns great, bad design

Pros: Great speed, the drive I'm using feels as if its is running at the same speed it would if it's hooked up to the onboard SATA3 controller (it's a SATA3 HDD).
Tested with USB 2.0 controllers and a early NEC USB 3.0 controller on a circa 2010 motherboard.

I didn't do any formal read/write speed testing but it was pretty obvious to me during copying files with USB3 that it was much faster than USB2 and about same speed as if the drive was inside the computer.

Love the on/off switch as well.

Cons: Bad physical design. If you are prone to losing accessories that come with the item, or don't have a flat surface to operate this on, don't buy this adapter.

- If you look closely at the picture of this adapter, you'll see the ports are about 1/4 inch (I believe it's that much, couldn't find where my ruler went) higher that they would need to be to line up properly with a HDD's ports on a flat surface. The silicone case that comes with the adapter has enough padding on the bottom to successfully line the ports up with the adapter, but if you lost that case you are may not get the ports to line up to use this adapter, as that case looks like it is custom to this adapter.

- As per other reviews on here, the adapter does not hook into the drive very well, as such if you hold the drive up with the adapter hanging on, the adapter will fall off.
I tried this real quick, holding the drive in one hand, letting the adapter hold on to the drive. The adapter fell off within 2 seconds. So if you do not have a flat surface to use this on, don't get this adapter!

Also not really a con, but:
When the drive is idle you can hear the drive arms move. Freaks me out as the drive doesn't do this while inside the computer. However previous USB2 adapters I've had do the same thing so I think it's just the drive arms retracting.

Other Thoughts: Summary: Speed is great, but the adapter has some bad physical design.

All in all, can't complain too much, as I got this for $15 here. 4 eggs, 1 egg off for the adapter's design.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Fast transfer speeds over USB 3.0
On/Off switch.
Rubber casings get the drive to the correct height to avoid any stress on the connection point.

Cons: Requires a power adapter, and it's not small.

Other Thoughts: Cool blue light

5 out of 5 eggsAn IT must have!

Pros: -Fast; the interface is USB 3.0; only limitation is your hard drive's cache and type

-Modular; has a USB female port to allow Male-Male cables.

-Mobile; can be inserted into any hard drive; even on drives already mounted in computers for fast and easy access.

-Informative; the LED on the unit acts as a hard drive activity light, allowing you to know when data is being read/written

-Easy; Plug and play and is recognized by Windows and Linux instantly

-Secure; comes with 2.5mm and 3.5mm rubber jackets to secure hard drive on table

-Reliable; can have data written to and read from for long instances

Cons: Unit is extremely light, the cable provided is actually heavier than the unit which may lead to unwanted disconnections at the worst times.

Requires external power. Although understandable since USB 3.0 has such high power draw.

Completely exposed; one light tug is all it takes for the unit to get disconnected. It's also susceptible to sagging which may damage the SATA connectors. There is also a risk of dropping the hard drive (which happened to me) if you're working in cluttered areas where a surface is not available.

Other Thoughts: If you're cautious around the unit while it's operating, it's great item to access hard drives with as it can be simply plugged into any SATA interface.

Since this is simply an adapter, there's no cooling system for the hard drive so if you don't live in Canada, you may want to occasionally feel the hard drive to make sure it doesn't melt.

I received a free Rosewill USB 3.0 female to male cable which was really useful since you can have the hard drive sitting on a surface away from any potential threats, or at a cooler area.

If you're looking for a long term hard drive interface, I would recommend an actual dock since it's more suited for fixated use. If you're looking for something to travel with, an enclosure would be more suitable.

If you work with plenty of loose hard drives and don't have the time to mount them in computers, this is the perfect solution.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat temporary dock

Pros: Works with Linux, even old distros
Convenient for use with multiple drives
Power Switch and activity LED
Good xfer rate

Cons: Nothing major

Other Thoughts: This is a great device for turning your spare SATA drives into speedy, portable storage.
Probably not as good as an external enclosure for a single, continuously attached external drive because of footprint and device-to-drive connection probably not quite as snug.
