Tripp Lite's USB over Cat5 Extender allows you to connect your computer to USB peripherals up to 130 feet (40 meters) away from the host computer, over ordinary Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6 cable. The Transmitter and Receiver kit is Bus-powered, so no additional AC power adapters are required. The kit is also plug-and-play - no special software or drivers needed.
This review is from: Tripp Lite U007-40M USB 1.1 Over Cat5 Extender Kit
Pros: Great idea.
Cons: It didn't work for me. I'm suspecting that the reason may be that Linux expects USB devices to be available with USB 2.0 device metadata, but I don't really know. Anyway, this device apparently did provide some connectivity, but Linux couldn't recognize that the connected device was a scanner. I'm suspecting that it's because this device only supports USB 1.x. USB 2.0 conectivity over ethernet cabling is provided by other devices now on the market, but for around 5x the price of this device. Sigh.
