1 out of 5 eggsWon't work with Windows 8

Pros: Solidly built.

Cons: There are no Win8 drivers for this cable and the Win7 drivers from the included CD or downloaded from Sabrent.com won't work on my Win8 machine. Also, the genuine Win8 drivers from Prolific.com will not work with this cable either.

1 out of 5 eggsCounterfeit Chipset

Pros: Fairly Priced, worked when it works.

Cons: I am the Senior Network Engineer heading a 4 man team.

This batch doesn't work.

Bought 6 of these for a large network upgrade project, and none of them worked with W7 64bit. Went online and downloaded latest drivers, still did not work.

Researched online and there was talk of counterfeit chip sets being bought from China.

Talked with Sabrent support, they remoted onto one of our laptops and worked for almost 2 hours to try to install driver, couldn't do it.

They finally ended up sending me out replacements for all of them.

Other Thoughts: Got these to configure a bunch of Cisco gear. cost us time and money as we were already onsite when I handed these out.

Wasted time running out to the nearest big box store and spent 3x more money to get replacements

I guess what Really gets me is that Sabrent wouldn't just take these back, they had to waste 2 hours of my time on the phone just to get these replaced (would not refund money).

4 out of 5 eggsInitial Review

Pros: Not sure what to say here other than it works but see cons. No problem with Linux/Windows etc.

Cons: So, hooked up to Cisco 1841's this exhibits some strange character outputs seemingly when idle. Could be a font or some other setting but my other USB to Serial (with/by ATEN) does not exhibit this behavior.

5 out of 5 eggsCool, handy tool.

Pros: It just works. Quickly converts any serial device to USB.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Has a rubbery coating on it for good grip. This is the 2nd one of these I've had and it worked for my older UPS as well as multiple switches and routers.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: None

Cons: Contains the PROLIFIC chip known throughout the net to cause problems with recognisation of the device connected via the cable in the OS. ie: Windows will see the printer but never allow anything to communicate with it.

Most times anything with this chipset just doesn't work at all.

Not even worth the RMA as it costs what Brown is charging for ground shipping on a manilla envelope these days, so I just wasted $1x.00

Other Thoughts: Go with a Keyspan instead, google it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Compact, Great Price. We setup a Pinewood Derby Track and needed this to connect starter system to new computer. Product was shipped fast and we are up and running. Thanks Newegg for making this Pack a happy group.

Cons: None that I can see. It even comes with a driver disk. I had to change the COM port, but that is not a con for the product only my laptop.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap in cost and make

Pros: Works fine once you wrestle through driver issues and also if it's the only one you're using on a particular machine.

Cons: Took a while to resolve the driver issues and get this thing to work. It ended up being a big mess of downloading drivers because the ones on the CD and the ones on Windows Update didn't work, and yet still having to supplement the downloaded driver with a Windows update. I don't remember clearly because it was a lot of back and forth. Also, I wasn't able to get two of these to play nice on one computer. They kept battling over the same COM port, and stopped working if you tried to change said COM port.
