2 out of 5 eggsIts works if you work

Pros: It does what it's supposed to do. I am now able to control my Panasonic plasma TV with my computer.

Cons: Like many others, I experienced endless "Error 10" errors from device manager and was almost ready to give up.
This is an EOL (end of life) product. Drivers support has ceased, and it doesn't work out of the box with windows 8. I eventually tried rolling back my drivers to 3.3.17.203 (4/29/2011) and my Error 10 issues are gone.

5 out of 5 eggsit works

Pros: I had to replace some old belkin usb to serial adapters. A software upgrade in a design program refused to "see" my old adapters. Their tech support told me newer adapters would solve my problem, being skeptical I only bought one (need three) to make sure it would work. For once tech support didn't lie to me. Ordered two more today.

Nice 6' cord, thumbscrews from serial cable actually line up and screw into the nuts with ease. Unlike cable I bought from B***B** that was about a foot long and I couldn't even get the thumbscrews one turn into the nuts (also 4x the price of Newegg's product).

I'm running three cutting plotters from XP and Win 7 64 machines. XP found the drivers from windows update, on the Windows 7 computer I had to use the driver CD.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsWhat it is

Pros: Serial cable with adjustable port settings and does a really good job of working unlike some cheap models.
Can pick your serial port.
Buffers.
Works well in Windows 7 X64
Looks nice.

Cons: Every USB port you plug it into will assign a different serial port number and speed to go along with it, not really an issue except when programs are unaware.

USB 3.0 causes random driver lockups and failed transfers.

Other Thoughts: A really good replacement for most older interface needs, I use it with hyper terminal to program and configure devices, as well as to check data streams, and other than the USB 3.0 issue it has been flawless. The port settings I understand, and just need to get used to assigning different ports different speeds for whatever protocol and device I am using. Still would be nice to forceably assign it to com 1 for the default.

2 out of 5 eggscould not get working with W7

Pros: never got working

Cons: Needed this to install a truck scale on a Windows 7x86 machine with no onboard serial. would not work with generic windows drivers, the drivers on the included disk, or the ones we downloaded from sabrent. Shows up as Error code 10, cannot start device.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked for a while under Windows 7, 64bit

Cons: Driver was updated and now driver fails to load (code 10)

Other Thoughts: I did some research on this. Looks like the Prolific chipset in this adapter may be a Chinese knockoff (look online for this). Prolific updated their driver to detect fakes and if the chipset isn't Prolific, the driver returns with a Code 10. The trick may be to find an older driver and then somehow prevent Windows Update from updating it.
OR
1. Find a USB-serial adapter that uses a true Prolific chip
2. Find a USB-serial adapter that uses the FTDI chipset.

3 out of 5 eggsfigured it out for Windows 7

Pros: Works

Cons: Had a heck of a time installing drivers. Tried the web site drivers and the driver cd. I did finally get the Drivers on the CD to work. Instead of clicking windows VISTA/7exe. from the menu try click browse cd and then Double click Windows then double click Driver for windows 7/Vistas 32-64...... not sure why it made a difference?

1 out of 5 eggsWon't work with Windows 7 64 bit

Pros: None since it does not work with Windows 7 64 bit

Cons: Sabrent's manual says that it may not work with the 64 bit version of Windows 7! And suggest reinstalling it which did not to resolve the code 10 message that the driver cannot start.

Other Thoughts: My chart plotting software for my Garmin MAPGPS78sc will only recognize COM 1 which is shown in device driver. I assume this means I do have a COM 1 port. So next I will will pull out my one year old PC from the desk and see if there is a serial port, in which case the problem will be solved and I wasted $15.00

1 out of 5 eggsNewest batch not working.

Pros: Price
Works great in all versions of Windows.
Used >50 of these over the years with great success.

Cons: The latest batch of these are not working. Driver initialization failure.

The packaging has changed with this new batch.

Old or new drivers don't seem to matter.
Same problem on XP and 7.

Other Thoughts: Uses the Prolific PL-2303 drivers

Note: Drivers are on the Mini-CD "hidden" in the folded cardboard cover.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: they do what you want them to do, make a usb port work with a 9 pin. handy for those network switches and routers that still refuse to change to usb and what not. also works great with windows 7 x64, which is great for what i need.

Cons: drivers can be a little tricky to find either iso the cd that comes with it or plan on some driver roulette if you rebuild.

Other Thoughts: had a staples unit that i had to get in a pinch, said it was window 7 compliant, it was but only 32-bit -- that was embarrassing to borrow the customer's notebook to get the job done. don't end up like i did, get this unit.
