2 out of 5 eggsNOT a standard PC serial port replacement!

Pros: Device works once you figure out it does not use standard signalling pins and will need to be adapted/rewired to be a standard serial port.

Cons: In spite of claims to the contrary, this cable is not pin-compatible with standard DB-9M PC serial ports like those on a motherboard. On the Sabrent, pin 1 is ground and pin 5 is floating. On a real PC serial port, pin 1 is CD (carrier detect) and pin 5 is ground. Net result is if you plug this into most peripherals or cables with a DB-9F mating connector this serial port WILL NOT WORK as there is no ground connection to complete the circuit. Avoid this product.

Other Thoughts: It took a week of hair-pulling debugging to figure out why this cable wasn't working properly. It seems apparent by Sabrent's marketing that they intended for this to be a standard serial port, but that somehow the device was miswired at the factory. As pins 1 and 5 are exactly on opposite ends of the connector, this was probably a simple production error where the connector was mis-wired. However, I purchased two of these cables and both had the same wiring error, so it appears systemic.
