2 out of 5 eggsWorked but....

Pros: Didn't work out of the box

Cons: Two problems really. Hard drive never spun up using the supplied power supply. Molex to Sata convertor was wired wrong. Luckily no damage done to hard drive. After no luck with original power supply, I hooked this unit up to a spare molex plug in a computer. Didn't notice the miswired converter til smoke and sparks melted the wire covering.

Other Thoughts: Sabrent sent me a new unit at no cost when I realized the power supply didn't work. The new molex to sata convertor is wired correctly

1 out of 5 eggsDOA for me

Pros: Price was not too bad

Cons: I purchased this just over 1 year ago. It sat unopened in the original packaging for the day I would need it. Yesterday was the day. I hooked it all up and it did not work. The power brick is dead. Zero volts showing up with my voltmeter. I suppose I should have tested it when I got it, silly me. It is out of warranty now. Like throwing $20+ out the window.

Other Thoughts: Over the years I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from Newegg. And for the most part I have been happy with them. This was not their fault but it is still irritating.

3 out of 5 eggsFailure to work with newest HDDs

Pros: Does indeed work with many SATA HDD drives, but see Cons for a major issue.

Cons: While an exact date is unknown, it appears that SATA drives manufactured in the 4th quarter of 2012 will not work with this model adapter. It also doesn't work with another manufacturer, inland. I have a Toshiba laptop 1TB HDD manufactured 12/26/2012 that both adapters consider to be unformatted, even though an older model of the Sabrent adapter had no issue initially formatting and transferring data to the drive. A friend has some new 4th Q Seagate 2TB drives that the inland reports as having the same unformatted condition. I suspect that the Sabrent won't work with them either.

Whatever chipset Sabrent is now using in this model adapter, it does not work with ALL HDDs.

5 out of 5 eggsSabrent converter

Pros: Well made and better than I expected for $20.00. Very easy to connect, no instructions needed.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I connected a 4 year old 5400RPM SATA laptop drive and waited several seconds for it to spool up and communicate with my desktop and it showed up as internal drive H in My computer.
All the files I wanted from it were easily copied.
Next I'm going to dredge up some old PATA drives I have and see if it's as easy.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great but outdated info

Pros: Works great with my 2TB and 500GB Western Digitals

Cons: the information is out of date. It will only work with up to 2TB drives. According to the manufacturer's website, http://www.sabrent.com/category/hard-drive-enclosures/USB-DSC5/ It can not be used with anything larger. Would have been nice to know, but useful tool none the less.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Works flawlessly. Just like my other one I bought years ago.

Cons: Cheap on the part of SABRENT to NOT give a full-length SATA cable. My old one came with one, but this one is only about 3 inches long :(

Other Thoughts: As my comments above, I'm satisfied, but took one egg off for Sabrent NOT including a decent sized SATA cable, I mean what would it have cost them? A BUCK? Cheap!

4 out of 5 eggswork like a champ

Pros: Works with every type of hard drive

Cons: On older IDE hard drive you might have to connect; disconnect and then reconnect USB cable. Windows 7 might not see the drive the first time.

5 out of 5 eggs6 Month Update...

Pros: This is a 6 Month + Update of this item.

This is the 2nd IDE to USB adapter that I have bought. The 1st was from Young Micro & DID NOT have the SATA Drive option which I needed later on.

This one has an IDE connector (for both 3.5' & 2.5' HD's) & a SATA connector as well (which is great & works on both 3.5' & 2.5' HD's)!

The power supply is an external brick (mine recently went bad, but luckily I had a spare). It also does NOT have a power switch on the brick itself (which is a nice feature).

I have hooked up HD's in ALL SIZES from 10Gig all the way up to 2TB (both IDE & SATA Drives) & have NEVER had ANY problems.

Cons: The external power supply does NOT have a power switch (luckily my spare one did).

One warning though when using the IDE 3.5' connector...

The connector that seats into the 3.5' HD's is smaller than the connector on the HD itself. You have to MAKE SURE that the pins line up with the pin holes & the notch lines up with the notch itself.

When using this item MAKE SURE to set ALL IDE HD's to SLAVE - it doesn't matter for SATA HD's!!!

Other than this warning the ONLY CON would be if you didn't have one of these. They are a godsend when you need them.

Other Thoughts: Would I buy this item again? YES!!!

Would I recommend it? YES!!!

When using this item MAKE SURE to set ALL IDE HD's to SLAVE - it doesn't matter for SATA HD's!!!
