5 out of 5 eggsNew addition to my PC repair toolkit

Pros: Works *well* on both USB 2 and 3. Make sure you plug it in ALL the way on USB 3, or you'll get USB 2 speeds. *DOES* power 2.5" drives from the USB port, so you only need to use the adapter for 3.5" and probably optical drives too. The all-in-one SATA+power connector is way nicer to use than the older IDE+SATA adapters that made you connect a short SATA cable and use a molex-to-SATA power adapter.

The unit itself is small and feels sturdy, though it's either snapped or glued together because I don't see any screws. There's a blue power light, and a white activity light that's on when idle and off during transfers. Both lights are way brighter than they need to be, so you might want some black tape if you're going to be leaving it running in the room you're sleeping in.

The cord is about 2.5 feet long, enough to reach from a table to any reasonable PC on it.

Contrary to a couple other reviews, the USB plug and SATA connector both fit tightly and aren't likely to fall out randomly. The USB plug is a bit loose in a USB 2 port, but that might just be me not shoving it in as far as I'm supposed to out of fear of bending up the USB 3 prongs at the back.

Cons: Like someone else mentioned, the power input goes in the opposite side from the data cable, which is a bit awkward. The power adapter that came with mine was the sort that takes up 3 spots on a power strip, not the nice narrow one pictured -- then again it has a common sized barrel plug so it shouldn't be too hard to find a better shaped 12v adapter to use with it.

I wish it was slimmer below the SATA port. As it is, it will prop 3.5" drives up a few mm, which can't be good for the SATA connector. The solution is to set drives upside down or at the edge of the table. It does the same thing with 2.5" drives, but they're light enough that it's a non-issue.

The specs page should really mention that it's bus powered for 2.5" drives since this was something I was really looking for.

Other Thoughts: I have a Sabrent USB 2.0 to IDE + 2.5" IDE + SATA adapter similar to this, and love it. This one is a worthy successor, though I'll be keeping the old one for IDE drives. I was happy to see that this WILL power 2.5" drives from the USB port, and only requires the power adapter for 3.5" drives.

A quick speed test on an old 250 GB WD Scorpio Blue maxed out at about 55 MB/s on USB 3 (which is close to this drive's speed on a direct SATA connection), and 38 MB/s on USB 2. The USB 2 adapter I used before maxed out at about 25 MB/s, so this one's worthwhile even if you're going to be using mostly USB 2. Speeds are more consistent on USB 2 than 3, suggesting it might go even faster if they used higher quality cable.

I haven't tested it with any optical drives.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Good

Pros: So I hooked up a laptop hard drive to this so I could transfer all the data to another laptop. Works good.

Cons: Only issue was that the data cable goes out one side while the power cord goes in on the other side... this can be a bit awkward at times...

1 out of 5 eggsloose connector

Pros: works while connected

Cons: I found this pretty useless since the connector is such a loose fit on the drive contacts that the slightest movement causes it to disengage. I finally had to use tape to secure it to the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsOut of the Box to Done in less than 15 minutes

Pros: Very Simple. Attached power supply to connector, and was able to open up the old tower and connect to the old hard drive without even taking it out. Plugged the USB connector into my computer and copied 20 GB of files in about 13 minutes.

Cons: An on/off switch would be nice, but it's half the price of a hard drive docking bay at a nearby Best Buy: no complaints.

Other Thoughts: My computer is not on the USB 3.0 standard yet, but it's nice to think that should I get one that has 3.0 or upgrade my current computer's USB ports, it will be able to take advantage of the newer technology.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Most clients these days come to me with SATA hard drivers - works perfect with my USB 3.0 pci card.

Cons: Wish it came with more adapter types, but I knew what I was paying for.

Other Thoughts: I'd hate to start a flame war... But the review with one egg is ridiculous anyone with half a brain could tell you that there's no way you're going to power this type of SATA adapter with just a USB cable... Not with half way decent performance anyway... Also the "mystery button" isn't a mystery at all... It powers down the hard drive so you can safely remove it... People these days I swear..

1 out of 5 eggsNot as pictured

Pros: It does function as a SATA to USB 3.0 adapter

Cons: The delivered product is not as pictured here - the USB cable is not built into the case (plugs on both ends). The adapter will only run off the 12V adapter - no USB power. There's also an undocumented 'mystery button' on the case that doesn't seem to have any effect on operation.
