5 out of 5 eggsDoesn't have the Prolific chipset

Pros: Does not have the buggy Prolific chipset/drivers. Specifically, this adapter WILL work with Labview serial drivers on Windows 7.

Cons: Cord is actually too long. Would rather have a 6" option.

Other Thoughts: The drivers for the Prolific RS-232 chipset in Windows 7 are broken and do not work with a lot of industrial/commercial products. This includes LabView and a lot of CAM software. If you have equipment that communicates serially, and it isn't working with Windows 7, this is most likely your issue. The Prolific chipset takes up about 95% of the serial market, including chipsets on most motherboards.

5 out of 5 eggsGet tech help !

Pros: 6' cord is a big help. The price is great compared to buying a similar product from a local store. Sabrent has a great record on this product type. The reliability, chipset, and OS, support is all good.

Cons: nothing to report

Other Thoughts: 'stopped working' If you move this cable to another USB port it will not work unless you config you're app to use the new USB port. When using the first time you may also have to try diff 'com' port numbers for the app to find the correct USB port. This is the nature of the product regardless of vendor.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly as advertised

Pros: Exactly as advertised: plugged it in, downloaded the newest driver from Microsoft online, and it's running perfectly. Good find on sale. Going to go try a few different uses this week and make sure, but it looks like it's good to go. Newest driver at MS was 4/10/2012.

Cons: Wasn't free? Doesn't make me a samich?

Other Thoughts: Going to use this to talk to many different types of devices since new laptop doesn't have serial and many of the video presentation devices require it for programming.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine for Cisco router console ports

Pros: Works perfectly fine for the only job I bought it for - Cisco router configuration.

Prior USB-DB9 Serial adapters worked with some hiccups, requiring driver reinstalls or Windows reboots. Not this one.

Download drivers from the Sabrent website and you won't have an issue. Win7 x64 Ultimate.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cable

Pros: Plugged in the cable and it just worked. Windows 7 detected the device and installed the drivers with no issues.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I plugged this cable into my computer after windows found the drivers I plugged it into my Cisco router and I was connected. No problems what so ever.

5 out of 5 eggsReally? A hacksaw?

Pros: FTDI chip set. Note that prolific chips sometimes work and sometimes don't work. Many prolific usb to serial adapters will cause this error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318784 This error is common with applications using the MSCOMM32.OCX for serial communications. In particular, programs written in VB6 will succumb to this error. There may be drivers that fix this issue, but it's a pita to figure it all out. FTDI chip drivers don't have this issue.

Cons: I tried to plug the cable into my serial device. There are studs on the serial connector that don't unscrew. I had to cut them off with a hack saw. Couldn't they make them unscrew? I gave it 5 stars anyway.

Other Thoughts: I didn't read the doc, nor use the install disk. It installed by itself without issue on my win7/64 system.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great for everything I've used it for, such as transferring files from an ancient laptop and communicating with other old serial devices I hadn't used in years.

Cons: Had to download Win7 driver, but doesn't everyone just download the latest drivers anyway? Also it's one of the more expensive options among the USB to serial cables, but there's a reason for that: see below.

Other Thoughts: A friend of mine into amateur radio advised me a while back that there were a lot of counterfeit chips on the market for these USB to serial cables. These fake chips allegedly result in performance that is buggy and inconsistent at best, and that's if it even works at all. According to him, the more expensive cables are generally a safer bet, proving once again that you get what you pay for.

Ended up not actually needing this, as I was surprised to discover that my motherboard actually had a serial header and I decided to use that instead. But it did work perfectly while I was using it, once I figured out why I seemed to have two COM ports yet only one cable.
