The Sabrent CB-FTDI USB to Serial converter is the perfect solution for transferring data from a PDA or digital camera. The USB to DB9 provides a connection between an available USB port and the more traditional RS-232 serial port found on many devices. This adapter is designed for connections to cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, modems, or ISDN terminal adapters through your USB port. Simply plug your device into the adapter and the adapter into your PC or Mac. COM ports and Baud rates can be modified to desired set up. Utilizes the FTDI chipset; plug and play, driverless installation.

1 out of 5 eggsBAD PINOUTS

Pros: 2 out 3 assembled correctly.
Low cost.

Cons: I bought 3, Two were assemble correctly but the third was completely miss assembled. The key pin for 40 pin IDE is pin 20, this connector had pin 22. The 44 pin connector was put upside down so the power supply would be connected to data lines and data lines to the power supply pins on the hard drive. Two pin were shorted together.
Luckily I only needed 2, I bought the third as a spare.

5 out of 5 eggsResolved my problem

Pros: Resolved crashes of software utilizing the USB to serial conversion

Cons: None that I've seen

Other Thoughts: I had been using a Proliant-based USB to serial converter to interface my ham radio equipment to a laptop running Windows XP with few problems. But when I updated to Window 7, the software became extremely unstable to the point of occasional blue screens. Online research suggested the FTDI-based interface used by this cable was much more reliable than the Proliant. This experience substantiated the reports!

5 out of 5 eggsPlug and Play

Pros: Works from both Windows 8 and Mac OS X just fine with no configuration needed.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this so I could manage a headless server I built via the serial port from a laptop. It beats having to get out an extra monitor and keyboard if I need to access BIOS settings or troubleshoot a boot issue.
