2 out of 5 eggsPurchased 6/13/12

Pros: This is my third review of this item since I bought it a little over two years ago. At first, I gave it a glowing review. It worked like a charm, as advertised. After about a year, probably a dozen drives duplicated later, I posted back about the 4 pin molex power connector being finicky, just took some placement in the right spot, once connected and recognized by USB on PC, all was dandy. Moving along...

Cons: This 4 pin molex connector, by the time I'd duplicated maybe 2 dozen drive tops, was nearly impossible to make connection. This morning, While trying to clone another drive, everything attached, nothing was happening, then suddenly, the ding d(o)ng from Windows, USB adapters installed... Awesome, I'm in business again. Launched the software and start the drive clone. Didn't touch a thing. It starts out with about 32 minutes remaining, then suddenly jumps to 7 minutes remaining and I'm getting write errors. Uh oh, USB connection is lost. Let's try this again. OUCH!, that SSD drive is freaking HOT!!! so is the Apricorn adapter!

Other Thoughts: Well, after two year, this unit is in the trash. I can't really complain after two years. When it worked, it was a real time saver not having to reinstall windows and download ALL those updates again. Every time the software said it was a successful clone, I'd simply swap the drives, fire up the computer, one restart for new SSD driver and I was in business.

I don't mind so much when an electronic unit fails after a couple of years (yes, it's sad that in this day and age, that's what people come to expect out of electronics anymore...), but what sorta kinda bums me out is that the OCX drive that was connected to it is totally dead, this drive is less than a year old, had very little use and had already been used twice with this Apricorn adapter for having a OS cloned on to it with perfect success. Fortunately, it was one of my cheap drives, one I never really cared for. So I decided to pitch this Apricorn adapter before I get tempted to hook one of my beloved Samsung SSD drives to it, if it were to fry one of those, I'd be a little more miffed.

This was a great piece of hardware, but extremely cheaply built. You;ll see my last review of this product isn't that far down, and the one right above mine mentioned frying a drive. I can confirm that it indeed can fry a drive, so buyer beware.

Guess I'll give the USB 3.0 cable a try next, it's a shame, I liked this one because of its flexibility for use with several types of IDE/SATA drives.

If they were to actually make this thing a lot more robust, I wouldn't hesitate to repurchase, even at USB 2 speed, it's that convenient, but now the risk has exceeded the reward.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Fit, Can rarely fry drives

Pros: When it works, this is fine. Slow, but you can access either 3.5" IDE, 2.5" IDE, or SATA.

Cons: I've had this thing actually ruin a number of older IDE drives. They would be working fine, then I would connect to this, and after 20 minutes or so, the drive would no longer function.

Out of roughly 120 uses, this has occurred maybe 10 times.

Also, because the connectors do not fit well, it's possible that if you're in a rush or not paying attention, you can bend pins or short something.

Overall, this is a poorly designed item. If it was the only option on the market, it might get you by; however, I'd suggest finding an alternative, which I'm doing on NewEgg now.

5 out of 5 eggsGot my monies worth from it

Pros: Have had this for almost a year now, have previously reviewed it as well. I have duplicated drives from ATA to SATA, HDD to SSD, Small to larger, and large to smaller. All without issues, each computer that had the boot drive duplicated booted up and at worst case scenario, loaded windows, a new driver, a reboot and it was done.

Cons: I previously had no cons but will say the 4 pin molex for powering 3.5" drives, is not the tightest fit. You do not want to start a clone and move or bump the unit.

I have seen the "larger block" error message, mostly when used with the ez gig iv that I downloaded, and I've ran ez gig iv from the included CD, which cured it for me. However, if you look this issue up, you will see they claim the device doesn't recognize the hard drive you are trying to copy too. They recommend putting the blank drive in your PC, connecting the drive you want to clone, to this apricorn adpater, and reverse clone the drive I have yet to see a need for this, but they do provide the steps necessary if you are receiving this error message.

Other Thoughts: Whilst searching the Apricorn site for issues with the large block error message, I noticed they say a person might need their newer USB 3.0 adapter. That's fine and all, but that adapter will do a person no good should you need to connect a 3.5" drive to is as there is no provision for supplying power to the drive, which a USB port will not provide

1 out of 5 eggsBad Power Connector Port

Pros: Great for cloning, extracting data and etc.
Simple and very easy to use.
Connects to all kinds of HDDs.
Even includes a bootable CD to clone drives. Extra awesome.
Overall great product.

Cons: This might just pertain to just me but it seems after about a couple months of using this product, the male side of the AC adapter connector on the DriveWire itself is not connecting properly.

Unfortunately I discovered this issue when I was in the process of taking a look at a customer's hard drive and the slightest movement in the wire would lose contact with the adapter and therefore suddenly lose power to the hard drive connected. Of course, this could easily cause hard drive problems with sudden disconnections especially while data is being accessed or extracted.

Unfortunately for me, I had to cut out the serial number on the bottom in order to utilize the $10 money back coupon. According to Apricorn's warranty policy, any item without a serial number will be voided of any warranty. Seems saving a mere ten dollars wasn't worth it...

Other Thoughts: What do I do? It seems I'm out of options here...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Worked as advertised.

Cons: Even laptop SATA drives require the AC cord to be plugged in (doesn't draw USB power).

Other Thoughts: Does what I expected. No issues with Windows 8 Pro.

3 out of 5 eggsAPRICORN IDE/PATA/SATA to USB HDD Adapter

Pros: Great & Very Easy to use when it works.
Simple hook up & Cloning when it works.

Cons: Do not bet the farm that it will recognize your hard drive.

It has a very cute error message that is clearly intended to make you think the problem is your hard drive rather than their Software.
I have used it on a fair number of BRAND NEW (major manufacturer) SATA drives and have found 30% are not recognized.
Apricorn Tech support wants me to send the unit in. That's just making me spin my wheels for a software problem they choose to ignore.
Others have observed this problem yet it remains unresolved. It's no wonder that the Software is now version 4.
They need to get off their keesters and resolve the problem with Version 5.

Other Thoughts: The hardware is decent.
The software is only great when it works.
