3 out of 5 eggsSatisfied overall

Pros: Vista found drivers automatically, secure in my laptop, easy to insert and take out

Cons: speed is not that great, about 30-40 mb/sec, though im not expecting much from an expresscard to esata adapter

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for choosing Syba products. The eSATA transfer speed is limited by the expresscard slot and the read/write speed also depends on the hard drive RPM, motherboard, CPU and etc. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

Regards,
Syba Customer Service 903

Pros: Running Vista no drivers needed. Plug and go. Works well. fast.

Cons: Sticks out somewhat. Would be nice if it was flush.

1 out of 5 eggsSYBA = Up In Smoke Tour

Pros: Cool logo; I love the 80s style.

Cons: I used this card in my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. It worked in Vista Business and Ubuntu Linux (the included SiI kernel module recognized the card). However, I experienced random data loss when writing to two drives in RAID-1. A few weeks later the card let out a pile of black smoke and ruined my ExpressCard connector. My last SYBA card (a PCI 4-port SATA adapter) also caught on fire.

Other Thoughts: This company seems very fire-prone and has not improved their quality at all. The card would be great if it did not lose data and catch on fire.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This model SD-PCBX-ESA2 is a non-RAID card. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

5 out of 5 eggsTrailblazer

Pros: This has worked for me from day 1 without a hitch on my HP DV9207US. I may have had to futz with the drivers as others have mentioned, but using the driver off the CD worked as I recall.

Cons: Sometimes a little funky to get in and out of the slot (locked in, that is). That could be the slot or the card, but once I figured it out I have no problems whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: This has the Silicon Image chipset and there have been plenty of updates for XP and Vista on Windows Update. I've installed all of them and it just works.

2 out of 5 eggsCard

Pros: not quite sure?

Cons: The drivers are a pain to install when you are trying to install a new OS on a external via Esata

some reason it makes my laptop buggy. Ex: Randomly if i am listening to music or anything my laptop freezes for about 5 mins and sound/music is playing it sounds like my laptop is going to have a meltdown and blow up (no joke).

and with that happeing alot i havent been able to tell if it is really faster then a 2.0 usb or not=/

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with Vista

Pros: Worked great with my HP Pavilion dv6000 (AMD Athalon x2) and an ICY DOCK MB664US-1S USB & eSATA Screw-less External Enclosure. Transfer rate ~40 MB/Second.

Cons: Can't think of any. The driver off the web site didn't work for me. Had to uninstall it. The driver on the cd worked just fine.

Other Thoughts: Remember it's an 'Express Card'. Make sure you know the spec of your slot. The device does not have the name SYBA or the model number on it anywhere. Oddly, it does have a serial number. I made a label for mine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great under Linux

Pros: Perfectly supported under recent Linux kernels by the sata_sil24 driver, including hotswap.

Cons: Getting ExpressCard hotswap working under Linux can be quite difficult on many current laptops (including my Inspiron E1705) due to BIOS deficiencies.

To work properly, your kernel must have PCI Hotplug and PCI Express Hotplug (which depends on PCI Hotplug) compiled as modules. On many systems, BIOS bugs require the option "pciehp_force=1" to be passed to the pciehp module when it is loaded. This is not the fault of the card though, but of the system.

Other Thoughts: I have not tested it in Windows at all.

2 out of 5 eggsHad Potential

Pros: Good speeds

Cons: Wouldn't stay seated in my ExpressCard slot. To make it work I had to continually put pressure on it. Once it partially unseated I had to remove the card, wait for Windows to realize it wasn't there, then I could re-insert it and wait for Windows to recognize the card and drive again.

Also had to have hard drive plugged in before inserting the card or it wouldn't recognize.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our products. We apologize for any inconvenience. We try to provide the most reliable products to our customer and all our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com for replacement or if you have any question.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than reviews made it seem.

Pros: Extreme transfer rates. Copying 100GB of data to an external drive all at once is no longer a sketchy process. Data sharing between my laptop and home pc has never been easier. It's never failed once working.

Cons: It is a little bit finicky. If you don't do things in the right order, it may not always work. See other thoughts...

Other Thoughts: On my laptop, I've found it works every single time if I first power up the external drive/s, then plug the drive/s into the card, and then plug the card into the laptop. If I do it like this, it works right the first time, every time. If I change the order around, it's about 50/50 whether it will initialize. It hasn't ever locked up my PC, just didn't work until I did things in the correct order. It's worth noting that my external enclosures work perfectly with my home PC via eSATA.
