5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Adapter

Pros: It works perfect
Sound is clearer than AUX input
Cheap

Cons: nothing..

Other Thoughts: I am using this on a 2014 Macbook Air. The system recognized immediately but I had to go to my sound settings to select the USB as the source of sound.

It really does work perfectly, and as for the blinking light, I don't see the point but it also doesn't bother me, and if it did, I could probably draw black permanent marker where it blinks or cover it with tape and be done with it. If this is what you need, this brand/model works flawlessly on my system and I imagine it would work with your similar system as well.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Works as advertised, and allowed me to use my headset after the internal 3.5mm port on my laptop broke.

Cons: Features an entirely unnecessary activity light on the side of it, which blinks constantly anytime sound is playing. This is really distracting when using it on my laptop, particularly in the dark. You could probably open it up and remove the whole LED, or just do what I did and cover it with some tape.

Other than that, it's kind of bulky and blocks adjacent USB ports, but it's not terribly oversized for what it does.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with GNU/Linux

Pros: I use a modern kernel on my Debian GNU/Linux system & it worked out of the box. No drivers, no rebooting, & no nonsense. This adapter is pretty small, is it doesn't take up much space whilst travelling or whet deployed.

I have had no issues with any voice-based programs & this adapter.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with a Hackintosh

Pros: Getting audio to work with a Hackintosh can be a challenge. I bought this so I wouldn't have to worry about hardware issues. I plugged it into a USB port and it was recognized almost immediately. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4.

Cons: The size of the adapter could cause it to block off other ports.

5 out of 5 eggsRemoved Microphone Noise

Pros: Plug and Play (Windows 8.1)
Portable
Removed microphone noise

Cons: May block other usb ports. (You can use a short extension to prevent it from blocking other ports).
Drivers do not support microphone DB Boost. (Admittedly I didn't need it)

Other Thoughts: [-] The Problem [-]

I recently picked up some new headphones (Logitech G230) and was having trouble with noise on the microphone line. Both the back mic-in and front panel mic-in ports had noise. This could be reduced by using a noise canceling option but I wanted the signal clean.

My PSU is plugged into a grounded socket so I figured that was not the problem. I game down to thinking my motherboard audio ports and front panel connections were garbage.

[-] The Solution [-]

Upon receiving USB audio adapter I plugged it into one of the front panel usb ports and plugged in the headphones into the line out and mic-in on the adapter. I opened audacity and did a test recording.... no noise... none... maybe if you cranked the mic volume way up but virtually nothing. So glad this worked!

Note: I disabled all the other sound ports in device manager, playback devices, and recording devices. I also set the microphone volume level to about 55. I tested it up to 75. Luckily the sound is so strong that there is no need for the DB boost option.

5 out of 5 eggsI Love It

Pros: This saves me from having to take apart my laptop to repair the audio plug. And, the sound is actually better than it was before. Easy to install, figuratively and literally. A big thank you to the seller.

1 out of 5 eggsMoney wasted

4 out of 5 eggsWorks With Debian/GNU Linux

Pros: Simple, inexpensive (got it from a Newegg sale), relatively small, no drivers needed, works with Linux, better sound quality than expected, responsive customer support (though the information was not helpful).

Cons: So wide that it partially blocks adjacent USB port, no useful instructions included for set up (for any compatible operating system - it is plug and play but you have to configure the operating system's sound settings to make it work optimally (if you don't know how to do this, you will need to do some research or get help).

Other Thoughts: I bought two (in case one was defective or failed quickly) of these from Newegg for use with my non-Linux friendly HP Dv7-4170us (also from Newegg) because I could not get the internal microphone to work with Debian-Wheezy. After several days of research, I learned how to make it work as desired.

If you want to change the load order of your sound cards:

As root, edit: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

To make this USB device secondary to the internal sound card (this what I use so the system sounds continue to play through the internal speakers):

# Keep snd-usb-audio from being loaded as first soundcard (default)
options snd-usb-audio index=-2

# Load USB soundcard second (internal card loads first by default)
options snd-usb-audio index=1

**********

To make the USB sound card primary and the internal sound card secondary (I use this when an application does not allow choosing audio devices):

# Keep snd-usb-audio from being loaded as first soundcard (default)
#options snd-usb-audio index=-2

# Load USB soundcard first then internal sound card second (use when USB is needed as default soundcard).
options snd-usb-audio index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1

Insert this USB device in a port then restart your computer.

Open a terminal as root and as a user. In each, respectively, run alsamixer. Use F6 to choose the C-Media soundcard. Make sure that the desired controls are active (press 'm') and use the up and down arrow keys to set their levels. You can have Audacity or some other record/playback app running to test your settings as you change them, with a microphone and headset plugged into this USB device.

Some applications (in Debian, at least) let you choose your input and output audio devices, like Audacity and SMplayer. Other applications require that your desired sound device loads as the primary soundcard. There may be better ways but this works for my purposes.

This is a nice USB audio device with decent sound quality for basic purposes, once you get it set up.
