4 out of 5 eggsWorks With Debian/GNU Linux

Pros: Simple, inexpensive (got it from a Newegg sale), relatively small, no drivers needed, works with Linux, better sound quality than expected, responsive customer support (though the information was not helpful).

Cons: So wide that it partially blocks adjacent USB port, no useful instructions included for set up (for any compatible operating system - it is plug and play but you have to configure the operating system's sound settings to make it work optimally (if you don't know how to do this, you will need to do some research or get help).

Other Thoughts: I bought two (in case one was defective or failed quickly) of these from Newegg for use with my non-Linux friendly HP Dv7-4170us (also from Newegg) because I could not get the internal microphone to work with Debian-Wheezy. After several days of research, I learned how to make it work as desired.

If you want to change the load order of your sound cards:

As root, edit: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

To make this USB device secondary to the internal sound card (this what I use so the system sounds continue to play through the internal speakers):

# Keep snd-usb-audio from being loaded as first soundcard (default)
options snd-usb-audio index=-2

# Load USB soundcard second (internal card loads first by default)
options snd-usb-audio index=1

**********

To make the USB sound card primary and the internal sound card secondary (I use this when an application does not allow choosing audio devices):

# Keep snd-usb-audio from being loaded as first soundcard (default)
#options snd-usb-audio index=-2

# Load USB soundcard first then internal sound card second (use when USB is needed as default soundcard).
options snd-usb-audio index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1

Insert this USB device in a port then restart your computer.

Open a terminal as root and as a user. In each, respectively, run alsamixer. Use F6 to choose the C-Media soundcard. Make sure that the desired controls are active (press 'm') and use the up and down arrow keys to set their levels. You can have Audacity or some other record/playback app running to test your settings as you change them, with a microphone and headset plugged into this USB device.

Some applications (in Debian, at least) let you choose your input and output audio devices, like Audacity and SMplayer. Other applications require that your desired sound device loads as the primary soundcard. There may be better ways but this works for my purposes.

This is a nice USB audio device with decent sound quality for basic purposes, once you get it set up.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as Intended

Pros: - Cheap Price
- Allows 3.5mm to USB conversion

Cons: Shipping took about one month.

1) Package Lost
2) Claim Created
3) Claim was created incorrectly
4) Second Claim Created
5) No traction, so escalated claim
6) Finally received the item

I'm patient, so only losing one egg on this, but wow what a hassle.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for work. Our laptops do not have a mic input and the USB headsets we are given are terrible and painful. This device allowed me to use my gaming headset (which is only 3.5mm connections) via USB. Works fine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for PS3 headset use

Pros: -No hassle, plug'n'play
-Cheap

Cons: PS3 does not play all audio over this device's output jack, only voice chat. That's not a con for this device, only for PS3 audio settings.

Other Thoughts: I bought this so I could use my nice PC headset (with individual 3.5mm plugs for audio and mic) with the Playstation 3. All you have to do is plug it in, and check that it's recognized as your voice input device in the PS3 settings.

As mentioned in the cons, the PS3 does not allow you to play all game audio through this device. To get around that (if you want to - some people might want to keep them separate) I bought a F-F RCA L+R audio to 3.5mm stereo adapter, and a M-F 3.5mm headphone extension cable, both of which are available at Newegg for pretty cheap. The PS3 allows you to output audio to the RCA audio cable even if you're using HDMI for video, which is nice.

I haven't used this with a PC.

3 out of 5 eggsGood but not sturdy

Pros: -Small
-Inexpensive
-Amplifies sound
-Simple (no installation)
-Works

Cons: -Not very sturdy

Other Thoughts: I love this product as it provides an inexpensive solution to the sound card on my laptop crapping out.

However after a couple months of using it with my laptop, I'm having to put pressure on it in a specific way in order to get sound in my left ear. So I am having to buy something else to fix the issue as I'm leery of buying the same product.

4 out of 5 eggsCrisp and LOUD

Pros: Crisp sound! Easy install.

Cons: Very loud... this device inherently magnifies the sound to an extreme level.

1 out of 5 eggsFurther Problems

Pros: The tech support was fast

Cons: I made an initial review about the crazy volume on this thing. The company responded and their tips were not helpful. I then did tech support with them and their advice did not fix the problem. Now they want me to pay to ship them the defective device. Very disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the inconvenience that this adapter has caused.

Try uninstalling the drivers for the device and have Windows search for generic device drivers.

Once the adapter is installed configure the audio settings through your system for the desired output.

There should be a configure option for the device in the Playback Menu.

For any other help please contact Syba support.

1 out of 5 eggsTerribly Loud

Pros: Fits and the concept seems useful

Cons: Incredibly loud that on medium audio in the volume mixer is unbearable. I may have received a faulty one as this is impossible to use.

Other people seem to be fine with it so perhaps mine is just borked.

Also a slight buzzing sound, but that may be my ears after they got shattered by this thing.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the inconvenience that this device has caused you.

The device should mimic the audio settings of your systems default audio levels.

On medium the device should not be unbearably loud for you to not enjoy the media playing.

Try adjusting the levels of the device in the Playback Manager tab.

For any other help please contact Syba support.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Doesn't need drivers, just plug and play and you are good to go.

Cons: No cons so far, works exactly as intended.

Other Thoughts: This is a cheap and reliable way to obtain audio if your onboard controller goes bad. Saves you from needing to buy a new motherboard if you lack a dedicated sound card.
