5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, did what I wanted it to do.

Pros: It reads the files
is compatible with 3 types of hard drives

Cons: USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: I ordered 2 of these to back up my hard drives that I suspected were going corrupt, about 2 weeks later both drives went corrupt. Good thing I have those adapters.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great for IDE, SATA is a no-go

Pros: Works great for IDE drives, and my 1st recovery was an IDE.

Cons: But SATA drives can't spin up and I believe it's because (I believe) the adapter lacks a 5v ground. Or possibly the power brick lacks the oomph?

Other Thoughts: After my recovery I was going to see what kind of throughput it would get on a new SATA drive, but I couldn't get it to work for SATA until I cracked my case and powered it off a spare power lead from my PCs power supply.

I'm Returning since SATA is going to be a growing need.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This adapter has been on the market for several years, and unless it is defective it should work both ways.

Make sure the power is connected to your SATA hard drive. This device will not power your SATA HD for you.

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID!

Pros: It comes in a small box?

Cons: Power supply failed to provide enough power to spin up two WD drives. Ended up pulling the PC apart and hanging a power and SATA cable out of the case.

Returning immediately ... avoid.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: I've been using this for many things over the past couple years and it works GREAT, even recommended it to quite a few friends that were looking for this kind of solution and they say the same thing.
Used this for both kinds of hard drives (notebook/desktop, IDE/SATA) and dvd writers, never had any problem, still using it to have an external dvd drive for my netbook.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cost is low and size is small enough to fit in service kit easily

Cons: Very unreliable. Purchased two units, both non-functional after 2-3 uses.

Other Thoughts: Better off to purchase an external drive case and swap drives in and out of one of those.

2 out of 5 eggsWhere are the good SATA/IDE->USBs?

Pros: Worked like a charm while it lasted.

Cons: Died after about a dozen uses.
Power supply gets too hot to not worry about. Not for unattended use.
Made in China; poor solder work. Came with a brandless HS002-5-12 supply.

Other Thoughts: Where are the respected manufacturers? It seems like Newegg sells thousands of these across all the different brands, and they each have at least a few complaints of mass destruction!
I'd gladly pay 4 times the price if I could get one that didn't cause worry about the health of my drives and motherboard, and lasts at least a few years of intermittent use.
I have an excellent Thermaltake SATA dock, but we need IDE and laptop IDE too!

Disclaimer: I did not purchase this from Newegg.
