4 out of 5 eggsWorks well - when I figured out how

Pros: Good function for the price. Ideally suited for a low-powered mirrored boot disk for a home server - which is my application. Good support for a $13 item - see other thoughts. Contrary to other reports, my unit plugged into the IDE port on my motherboard and held two CFs sturdily enough that I will leave them that way.

Cons: Primarily documentation related. The documentation is very sketchy. Although again, probably not unreasonable for a $13 item. I had some difficulties in getting to run, and found the problem on my own.

Other Thoughts: I had problems. The card recognized one but not two CF cards at a time. No amount of dinking with it would make this work. I sent a request for support to Syba over the issue.

It turns out that even though the card works from 3.3V or 5V, and the CF cards I used (Transcend 2G) work from either voltage, my motherboard would read one disk but not two if the power jumper is set to 3.3V on the adapter. The literature says that 5V is the default setting on the card, but mine came with it set for 3.3V and I didn't notice. That cost me about three hours of debugging.

So - on any new adapter, read all the literature, and inspect the card jumpering carefully.

Syba did respond to my email helpfully, and was ready to exchange the article. I suggested that they note this issue on their web site under their support FAQ.

But I'm now satisfied. It gets four eggs instead of five only because the docos were confusing, and I'm used to reading documentation.

4 out of 5 eggsInexpensive little adapter

Pros: Inexpensive and easy way to add 1-2 CompactFlash cards onto a single IDE port. Plugs straight into motherboard. Supports UDMA (make sure your CompactFlash card supports it).

Cons: Documentation is pretty lacking. I was banging my head for almost an entire day trying to figure out why it would find but not read my CF card until I plugged in a 4-pin Berg connector from my power supply into the pins sticking out the side of the adapter. Also doesn't feel like it seats entirely secure (wiggles quite a bit when plugged into the motherboard), but haven't had any issues yet with the CF card dropping out.

Other Thoughts: I have been using this to run the OS drive on my file server running Debian. Had some issues initially with the boot-up taking ridiculously long (30 minutes) with Grub, but not sure if that's because of my CF card (4 GB SanDisk Extreme III) or the adapter. Switched to LILO and boot-up is now fast. It has been running great in my file server for the past 6 months.

I am only using one CF card on the master side currently, so I haven't tested the adapter with 2 cards installed yet.

1 out of 5 eggsIt just doesn't work

Pros: It plugs directly in the motherboard. That's about it.

Cons: The IDE connector fits incredibly loose. The solder connections look like my first solder globs I made when I was 4 years old. Has a ton of "re-worked" spots, and they look even worse.
It would only think it saw the CF card if I had it on the slave side, but I was still unable to do anything with it as a disk, including formatting. In the BIOS, it shows up with garbage text as the disk name, making it look like a drive on it's last leg.

Other Thoughts: This card is so bad, it could give you cancer just looking at it. I should have gotten the hint from the previous reviews.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the inconvenience. All of our products come with at least 3 years warranty. Please don't hesitate to contact us at support-us@syba.com if you have any problem or question.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal for the Price

Pros: It's so much smaller than I expected. Beyond this, it has two ports, clear indications of jumper settings, and just plain works.

Cons: It can be difficult to seat properly, and has given me occasional fits loading OS partitions, but nothing that couldn't be work-arounded.

Other Thoughts: The packaging: Mine arrived with all the backside pins bent to hades and back because of how it is packaged. Fortunately I was able to straighten them all, and no real damage was done. And while this isn't Newegg's fault, it still costs a rating point.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I got it to "work"

Cons: Poor souldering, master side doesn't work, constent I/O timeouts, the ide plug does not fill a standerd slot so its easy to get the plug off by a pin or two. You have to plug in the addapter into the board not into a ribbin cable so it may not fit it every case.

Other Thoughts: Great concept poor implementation.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsSupports DMA for not much more

Pros: Supports DMA, plugs in solidly, lets you run two cards.

Cons: Workmanship a bit rough but no problems.

Other Thoughts: We are using these in production on systems that boot and then basically don't touch the disk. With cheap 2G CompactFlash cards, it's the perfect low-cost SSD. Other card adapters didn't support DMA and caused no end of problems.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality control

Pros: none

Cons: Poor overall quality. Device worked initially but after plugging/unplugging several CF cards it stopped. I took it to our electronics lab and inspected it and found poor soldering, corrosion on a connector, lots of manufacturing debris such as solder mask and threads. Not up to the usual quality I've seen from Syba.
