5 out of 5 eggsWorks.

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I am using this adapter and a 4GB CF card in an Agilent 1672G Logic Analyzer as a replacement for mechanical hard drive that originally came in the unit. I had tried two other IDE-to-CF adapters without success. This one finally worked and has been without any issues.

4 out of 5 eggsSimple way to substitute for an old disk

Pros: Straightforward, handy little contraption that works about the way you'd expect. Decent build, adequate docs; plus green/yellow/red power/master/slave LEDs, which are nice though useless on my install

Cons: Minor design flaws for laptop application: the (unkeyed) 44-pin connector is slightly recessed in the 2.5" form-factor case (more on that below), and the CF slots ought to be further from the opposite edge and stacked on the top-facing side. It'd be tighter for using Microdrives but at least you wouldn't have to unscrew & remove it in order to access the alternate slots.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to another reviewer I learned why it wasn't recognized at first by my vintage Latitude: the hot-plug fitting from Dell which attaches to the 44-pin male connector through the caddy's narrow opening was not making contact due to the CF adapter being fastened to the screw mounts. If you leave the piece halfway inserted rather than pressed snug against the CF adapter it works. The plain vanilla 16GB Transcend card I'm using is detected in BIOS as well as in Windows 7, which considers it a fixed disk with DMA 4, etc.--so far, so good. On my machine the slave port on the main ATA channel is taken by the DVD, which I suppose could be removed to gain use of that 2nd mem slot. My only other advice would be to get the fastest CF you can find, since this 133x card is about as pokey as the ailing 4200rpm disk it replaced.

4 out of 5 eggsInstalled XP Pro

Pros: I used a Duracell UDMA 300x CF card with this in an old HP ZV6130US laptop. I needed to replace the old IDE drive to use this system for a side project and this product worked well. For this laptop I did not need to remove the middle pin.
I have some problems with the XP Pro install but I do not know if it’s the card I used or the adapter.

HDTUNE 2.55 benched
Average Transfer Rate: 38.7MB/s
Access Time: 0.5ms

This is sufficient for my needs and I am pleased with the results.

Cons: I think the problem lies with the CF card and not the adapter, but XP detects the drive as a removable disk. This is not a problem for what I am doing but It has messed up some of the settings in XP Pro.

Also there is nothing on the packaging to say if the middle pin is removable, they only mention that on their website. Again this is not a problem as the laptop will take it as-is.

Other Thoughts: It works for what I needed

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Basically works.

Cons: What is said about the device is accurate, but what is NOT said is very important. If you intend to use it as a Windows system boot device, you better buy the correct type CF card, example Transcend Industrial. I bought an ordinary Transcend card. MOST CF cards identify themselves as REMOVABLE. I spent most of a weekend beating my head and countless booting until I finally got it to boot, sort of. The MyComputer display showed the system disk as REMOVABLE (NOT GOOD), which was causing all my problems. Googled the situation, and the problem was confirmed. Not sure what'll I do. Warning buy a CF card that identifies as FIXED disk, and good luck figuring out which one's are. I have discovered that ADDONICS makes a similar adapter that ALWAYS reports any and all CF cards as FIXED to windows.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It works. Seems decent bit faster than my old 7200rpm HD.
Old HD 27.8mb read / 17mb write.
SD card 53.9mb read / 16.8mb write.

Cons: Not completely quiet. I hear some power supply twitching noise while accessing sometimes.

Other Thoughts: Win XP sp3 Fat32

SD Card: Silicon Power Superior 32GB
PN # SP032GBCFC1K0V10

Bios recognized as: UDMA Mode: Mode 5 (100mb max xfer)

HD Tach benchmark on SD card:
Peak 53.7mb, avg 50.6mb, random access .4ms

HD Tach benchmark on HD: Crashes during tests, so no results.

ATTO Benchmark:

Didn't benchmark past 16k on HD as speed didn't increase.

Didn't benchmark past 512k on SD card as speed didn't increase.

I read somewhere that it might be better to leave the FAT table to FAT32 as that is how the SD card's hardware was tweaked for & shipped as. This is why I didn't go to NTFS. I don't know how true this is, since you can read anything on the inet & not be true.

1 out of 5 eggsSYBA IDE To DUAL COMPACT FLASH ADAPTER

Pros: No pros... It seems to work....very very slow. I used a CF card that stated that it supported IDE Mode. I was getting about 5mb Read/Write Speed. That means that a mechanical drive specs out faster than using this.

Cons: Using Windows 8 on this SYBA ADAPTER or any device is a horrible thing to do. Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way... Laptop Reviews, Computer Reviews and Windows 8 DVD-Retail/OEM reviews... so many CONS for windows 8... Give the people what they want is what we were told? So what we wanted was a train wreck? No thanks! I'll stick to windows 7. Maybe I should check out a Chromebook or MAC OS or Linux... There are other options out there, which is nice and that gives people choices. I most likely will go back to Windows 7 which is a good O/S.

Other Thoughts: I tried Windows XP, Win 7, and Windows 8... on this SYBA ADAPTER with no success. My laptop also had no hole in its connector for one the the pins on the adapter. People said in reviews they have this issue also and that the pin in question can be broken off carefully and you can use it without that pin as that is just a "DEAD KEY" pin. So I did that and windows installed successfully but took 15min to get to desktop from a cold boot and 5 min to open MY COMPUTER.... I went back to IDE mechanical and it runs better than this adapter! Moral is... IDE is a thing of the past... If you have IDE do yourself a favor...dig a hole in the backyard... say a few words... then bury the outdated garbage. Buy something modern and enjoy the new technology.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This adapter has been installed in thousands and thousands of industries applications.

Speed it not the only feature users are looking for.

With the adapter replacing the HD, the system will run with less power, quiet, cooler, last longer than HD

There are tons of applications that take advantage of this adapter or simulate adapters.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little adapter

Pros: Allows the use of CF cards as SSDs in old laptops! The speed increase over an old hard drive is absolutely incredible, not to mention the silence and weight reduction.

Cons: Not a con with the product, but something you should be weary about: NOT ALL CF CARDS WILL WORK! And it's not this product's fault, it's just how the technology is. All CF->IDE adapters are passive devices, so you need to be sure that the CF card you buy supports UDMA or it won't work (even if your motherboard is so old that it doesn't). Also, if your motherboard does not support 48-bit LBA then you may be limited in the size of CF card that you are able to use.

Other Thoughts: If you've still got an old laptop that you use for whatever reason, a CF card drive may be just the upgrade you've been looking for.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Company

Pros: Unknown

Cons: Numerous Cons, First as mentioned in other posts here the KEY pin being in place prevented me from attaching the device into two Dell laptops, One HP/Compaq, and one older IBM. Second, Customer support, Product support in nonexistent at SYBA. All they can tell you is that they sell them and they work on their internal test equipment. I provided a link to the 44 pin layout which denotes pin 20 being the key pin and asked to what standard was their device manufactured too and all they could say is that it works with their internal test equipment. My guess is that they do not pay their tech support much money, either that or they like folks who couldn't make it at McDonalds. I thought about removing a pin but thought perhaps there was some newer standard I was unfamiliar with. Having seen these posts I see I can remove a pin. Thanks for that information. WHich should have come from SYBA..... if they knoew what a pin actually was :-)

Other Thoughts: I now know to avoid SYBA products.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

It is important for our technical support team to provide accurate and up to date information to all of our customers. It is possible that one of our engineers is not aware of a laptop 44 pin "key" position issue with this adapter and provided the necessary support to our customers.

We will update that information on our support handbook for all the engineers to study and be able to provide the support quality our customer expect.

5 out of 5 eggsOlder Dell Inspiron 600M

Pros: Form factor works for Dell IDE caddies. Previous Syba IDE I had did not have the side mounts :-( for the drive bezel. This adapter holds 2 CF cards. I did not have to switch voltages.

Cons: Cost, would like to see the adapter at half the advertised cost.

Other Thoughts: At first I used a Trans.... and it DID NOT support booting. After MUCH frustration and many unkind words to Trans.... I tried Team with full IDE spec, and voila. Boots like a champ. Revives an older laptop, slight performance improvement (only on reads) but I like it. My kids appreciate it as well. So if you're having problems, look at the mem specs, not this card.
