Watch out for delivate connector tips
- Pros: Good thick build as it is meant for external use and thus should be externally shielded. Consistent output. No interference problem
- Cons: The thickness is much more hard than the shielded USB cabes and is bulky at the same time. So the connectors do not stay stable and as sticky as USB. The connectors will come out or slide as you move your connects equipments (My case Lap top PCIMCA card to External eSATA Drive) The connector tips are not engaging or locking to the units you are connecting, so always check with the equipments you are about to connect. The plastic/metal combination hooks can be brittle, so my connector got finally chipped out.
- Other Thoughts: The connector tips are not as strong as the cable itself.
There are only few makers in the market at the moment.
Connectors are out of standard
- Pros: They are the best constructed, sturdiest eSata cables out there.
They are round, not flat, which get bad connections when you use them a lot outside (connecting and disconnecting to a laptop, bending and unbending to pack, etc.) They come with protecting lids for the connectors. They are very affordable.
- Cons: The exposed part of the connectors is too short (about 1/8", or 3mm) to be able to make contact in most eSATA sockets. They only worked with my old Cardbus card, not with the new PC Express (SIIG), and practically with none of the enclosure sockets or brackets I use: Bytecc (2 models), Rosewill (2 models), and Thermaltake.
- Other Thoughts: Look carefully at the picture of the connectors when you buy eSATA cables. Other brands also have this problem (Thermaltake and OKGear). The connector should look almost as long as a USB one (just 1-2mm shorter). Newegg is fantastic!! I asked for an RMA of the 2 cables I bought and they simply returned the money to my account; they didn't want the cables back. Not even after I told them that one of them was still sealed in the original packet! I guess that being for free, I can now experiment with a pocket knife at cutting some of the plastic...
Too Stiff
- Pros: When it connects, it seems to be of good quality.
- Cons: SATA connectors are notoriously loose and finicky. This cable is so stiff because of its thick plastic covering, that it is hard to get it to stay in place in a sata connector. The weight of the cable and the stiffness make it want to shift and you get disconnects easily.
- Other Thoughts: eSATA cables are way to expensive and good ones are way too hard to find.
