Is it possible to get a longer cable?

Perhaps it's possible.  Of course you could just use a USB extension cable with this, which should work just fine.  This adapter worked fine for me to connect an old HP LaserJet to a modern Win7 computer, with one caveat;  It doesn't come out of sleep mode very gracefully, and sometimes requires a reboot.

Question 2

is this cable compatible with an HP Laser jet 4 printer which has a 36 hole pad that connects to the priter?

This cable connected to my HP inkjet 722. However using Windows 8.1 it did not allow computer to printer communication. So while it did physically connect, I was not able to use it.

is this 18 pins?

I don't know how many "pins" it has (they're not really pins anyway), but this is the standard connection for a parallel printer, at the printer.  The standard is more than 30 years old, and called Centronics.  As I recall, the end that was plugged into your computer before USB became ubiquitous, was a 25 pin male D-sub, and I THINK the Centronics end was also 25 "Pins". It's what you need if you want to connect to a parallel printer, using a USB port on your computer.

Where is the CD comes with the cable?  I bought this cable the manual states that CD driver in the bag, but it wasn't there.
