5 out of 5 eggsCTG Parallel to USB Cable W7

Pros: Works fine. Plugged into HP 5P, plugged into USB port on HP tower, W7 found it and installed it and it works. Meets expectation.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Have not been able to get combination of CTG cable, HP5P printer, and Linksys WPS54G print server to function.

1 out of 5 eggsParallel Printer Adapter

Pros: No pros, can not connect to it.

Cons: It is a 1/4" wider port than any parallel printer plug that I have ever had. I go back to about 1992. I don't know what this thing fits, but not any thing that I have and I still have 3 or 4 old printers that use parallel ports

Other Thoughts: We live and learn. This was a Cables To Go Model 16898 6 ft. 6ft USB to IEEE-1284 Parallel Printer Adapter Cable

5 out of 5 eggsSuccess with Win 8 and HP-6P

Pros: with Win 8, cost less than $10, and took 5 minutes.
See below for simple steps

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: After reading about a lot of attempts by others to use an HP-6P laserjet printer with Windows 7 and 8, and finding most of them discouraging, I want to share my success. I have not yet tried with Win 7. My solution was with Win 8, cost less than $10, and took 5 minutes. Here are the exact steps I took:

Turn on HP-6P
Using Cables To Go (C2G) 16898 cable (NewEgg Item #: N82E16812196233):
1. plug IEEE-1284 (parallel) end into printer
2. plug USB end into Windows 8 machine (no visible acknowledgement appeared on screen)
3. manually run Windows Update (Windows found HP-6P driver for Win 8, which appeared in description for download)
4. after Win Update completes, in Control Panel check that HP-6P is installed and appears under "Devices and Printers -> Printers
5. Print

4 out of 5 eggsWasn't expecting it to work, but Surprised!

Pros: Eventually it does what is says. I connected an old HP 895cxi printer to this port, and it is now up and running fine using Windows 7.

Cons: Manual is very small print! Get out your magnifying glasses. And follow step by step, missing one step, the printer didn't work. Package says that CD with drivers included, but there was only a manual, no CD in package.

Other Thoughts: In the end it ended up working out, but took several tries and following exactly the steps in the manual. Windows 7 recognized the device right away, but then getting the printer engaged, took a little more effort. Overal I'm happy I can still use the printer.
