5 out of 5 eggsA REAL review

Pros: Ladies / Gentlemen: @ N/A Has provided us with an example of true history, an actual REVIEW of a product on the Internet. He has provided the equipment involved, reason for use, methodology used to determine a workaround AND results of the use of this product. N/A, thank you.

Do to your excellent review, I a going to purchase one now.

Cons: NONE.

Other Thoughts: I wish all "reviews" were as complete as this one by N/A. All N/A did was keep it simple and provided all of the facts. No vain attempt to be cute or clever, just the facts. The equipment, reason for use, workaround if needed, why necessary and final results.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: + does what it is supposed to... sort of.

Cons: - first one was malformed.

Other Thoughts: I ordered one of these for a large [clustering] project I have in the works, where there are two 8-pin and one 4-pin power connections on the motherboard (Tyan S4882), but the power supplies in use only have one of each connector. The first adapter I tried was malformed and ended up bending one of the pins on my power supply slightly. It would not stay in place either as it was too loose.

The second part I ordered worked as desired, without issues. The locking connection could probably stand to be a bit more snug, however.

I had to knock off two eggs for the shoddy craftsmanship on the first unit, and the extra time I had to wait on the second part to arrive.

3 out of 5 eggsA useful splitter, but arms should be longer

Pros: Solves a nasty problem -- currently, it's hard to get a power supply that isn't huge, yet has dual 8-pin EPS-12V. My specific issue was a TYAN S7010 motherboard. I had an Antec Titan case with a built-in TruePower Trio 650W power supply (which only has a single 8 pin EPS-12V). The alternative was to get a power supply that was way too big for my needs (plus it was another $109). This splitter was a cheaper & easier solution.

Cons: The length of the arms of the "Y" was too short for my motherboard. I ended up getting some 18 gauge molex wire & electrical tape, and spliced in a few more inches. I would have given this product 5-eggs if I didn't need to do that (or if Athena made another version of the same product with longer arms).

Other Thoughts: Here's how I figured out that my splice job was a safe thing to do:

18 guage molex is rated at 5Amps.
I've got dual Xeon E5520 cpus with a thermal design power of 80w.

Given: 80W * 2/12V= 13.33A, and TPW is usually 20%-30% peak,
we're talking at most 17.33A peak (13.33A * 1.3 = 17.33A).

Each limb of the Y is made out of 4 strands of 18 guage molex wire,
so that's 4.33 A / wire, which is still below the conservative 5A/wire rating.
Each rail of the PSU is 19A, so that worked out too.

The extra voltage drop was tiny -- not a problem.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: This extesion works like its supposed to. If your PSU's 12v 8-pin connector falls short(I have an Antec Twelve Hundred) trying to run it behind the mobo tray then this one is the way to go. Matches with all my other wires.

Cons: Well after shipping total comes just under $13

Other Thoughts: Sadly I bought a Cosair HX1000w and the 12v 8-Pin is long enough. I did manage to try this out though and come to find out, it works.
