5 out of 5 eggsIt just works

Pros: I've been using these off and on for more than a year on various devices, never ran into an issue with it. I primarily use them to work on various pieces of networking equipment, and it works every time. No drivers to load on Windows 7/8.

Cons: None that I can think of.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works. Works in Win7Pro64.
Works INSIDE Win7 running an XP virtual machine with ancient software.
Consistently.
Remembers what port it is.
Consistently.

Cons: We have 4. One died after about a year in constant use. So they are not indestructable

Other Thoughts: As others have noted, different drivers behave differently.
We had no trouble with the driver that shipped with the
device in Jan 2014.

5 out of 5 eggsCOM port retention works with multiple adapters

Pros: COM port retention works with multiple adapters, even when you change port values. have bought like ten of these and no doa's or returns. Have used with XP and windows 7. Have not tried with 8,yet.

Cons: It does not predict the future.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked Perfectly.

Pros: Windows 7 x64 downloaded needed drivers from the internet. Didn't need to use the included cd.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: My dad needed an adapter to get his noise dosimeters to work with his new laptop which didn't have a serial connection. This adapter worked with no issues.

4 out of 5 eggsOk, but no drivers

Pros: I"m using these adapters with scales and barcode readers that were originally connected by serial cables. I didn't have any trouble setting up or configuring them to work in Windows XP, Windows 7 32-bit or Windows 7 64-bit systems.

Cons: Drives are ancient. You need to get the Prolific drivers from their web site for all the features to work correctly.
The "port-retention" features seems to work with ONLY the
driver dated 10/24/2011. Not a big deal, but the vendor, StarTech could at least upgrade the drivers on their site.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks and you won't be disappointed

Pros: - Open box
- Load driver
- Plugin and go

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have an older serial device that works well and its not worth upgrading. Its for my homeautomation hobby and lots of people have to deal with this issue

My concern was going "too cheap" on a serial coverter as there a number of stories about things that don't work This one works and is a no brainer.

Is it really worth $5 less than this to roll the dice on your serial device working? No

5 out of 5 eggsJust the ticket

Pros: Worked out of the box to connect a serial port device to a newer computer that only had USB ports. Still working fine after a year.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsWorked well

Pros: Installed software first, no problems, plugged cable in and it was found and software applied just fine, hooked it up to my old weather station and everything worked. All installs should work this smoothly.

Cons: Wish it was less expensive, but when something works just like it is supposed to it eases the pain :)

Other Thoughts: Perfect device to run older hardware when you get a new computer with no serial port. I used Device Manager and assigned the device the COM port that my old weather station had to have and cycled the computer and the COM port was retained just as advertised. I'm glad someone makes this thing!

5 out of 5 eggsWorked well

Pros: Software installed easily under Vista SP1, plugged adapter in and software was found and installed painlessly. Went to Device Manager and changed the COM port to the one that my weather station wanted (it could only use COM 1 thru 4) and hooked it up and BINGO! everything worked! Wish every install was this easy.

Cons: Wish I didn't have to spend so much.

Other Thoughts: If you have purchased a new computer with no serial port, this is the adapter to get to make your older hardware work with your new computer. I rebooted and the adapter did retain the COM 1 port setting I had assigned it in Device Manager.
