Add a Centronics parallel port to your desktop or laptop PC through USB.

The ICUSB1284 USB to Parallel Interface Converter Cable allows PCs that support the USB specification to print to any standard parallel printer. The USB interface provides a much faster data transfer rate than a standard parallel port, thereby reducing the time waiting for a print job to be sent to your printer.

This portable device is self-powered and provides Plug and Play installation to any USB-compliant computer running Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks - Trial and Error

Pros: Works, when you figure it out. Cord is built properly, manufacturing looks appropriate. Eventually I was able to make it work with Windows XP Pro based desktop - to connect it to a Dot Matrix Printer - IBM PPS II 2390.

Cons: There is no documentation - "go figure it out" yourself approach. There is an installation disk wth instructions for Win 98SE, which does not apply to Win XP.

6 foot cord was a bit too short to work with a desktop. I should have bought a 10 to 12 foot cord.

Other Thoughts: Did not work right out of the box on Win XP-Pro. First load the appropriate printer driver for your Parallel Printer --- then Connect the printer to the CPU with this cord. Go to Control Pannel -- Printers and Faxes -- Right Click on your printer --- Properties ---- open "ports" tab --- Uncheck LPT1: ----- Check mark "USB Virtual Printer Port. It then worked.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked right out of the box(ish)

Pros: I have a new Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows 7 and an HP LaserJet 4200n printer whose network card burned out but whose parallel port was still functional -- but no parallel port on the laptop. After reading many reviews online, this adaptor seemed most promising for the OS/hardware combination -- and Windows 7 automatically installed some driver the first time I plugged it in and the printer was automatically configured. Job finished at step 1.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I considered fixing the network card on the printer, but frankly a $23 cable that allows me to avoid the ridiculously overly-complicated admin software HP uses with that printer... great, I'm sticking with the cable.
