1 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 driver does not work

Pros: Great functionality

Cons: Out of box driver nor website published "Windows 7" driver works. (Tried 3 different Windows 7 computers).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Never had any problems
Windows 7 support (Get updated driver on their website)
I use this primarily for connecting to cisco devices via console cable and it works fine on my windows 7 laptop. Never once did I have an issue with it. Could not recommend it enough.

Cons: None at all

5 out of 5 eggsThe only one for Win7 (at least)

Pros: It uses a different chipset than 90% of the others out there, meaning they have different, and, in my experience, vastly superior drivers for it.

Cons: None. It works brilliantly for everything you expect it to: configuring Ciscos and other hardware for hours on end to taking input from a client's stationary bike for his 3d biking software.

Other Thoughts: Almost every other USB-to-Serial adapter uses the Prolific PL-2303 chipset (yes, it is "prolific", haha), which may be fine as chipset, but time after time the driver crashes after continuous use for an hour or two, both on my computer and others. I have only used it for extended periods on Windows 7 computers, so I can only speak to that OS. The Prolific models do appear to work fine with the embedded support on Mac, however, judging by the experiences of other network techs I know. Back on point, I've seen the Prolific driver just crash, but most of the time it completely freezes the computer (it must be interacting with the kernel to have this serious an effect) or merely blue-screens/crash dumps, and reboots.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally, one that actually works right.

Pros: FINALLY! Someone made a USB-to-serial converter that actually works like it should. And, remembers its COM port assignment between disconnects to boot! I've never liked USB-to-serial converters - nothing but trouble with the previous 10 or so that I've owned. I was highly skeptical of all the positive reviews but I can confirm that they are in fact true. It works, and it works as advertised.

Thanks StarTech!

Cons: Absolutely none.

3 out of 5 eggsThe fasteners are wrong

Pros: Comes with a CD, and installs easily and quickly into Windows XP. The computer recognized it easily and there were no problems.

Cons: The fasteners are the wrong ones. This connector has the female side of the screws, so you can't connect to anything. We couldn't use it at all.

I'm guessing it would work if you have no screws on the other end, or there must be some special application where the female connector had the male side of the fasteners.

Other Thoughts: Check what you're connecting this to before you order. If the female serial port you're hooking this to has the female side of the fasteners (screws), then this adapter won't work. 99% of the ones I've seen in 20+ years of working on computers are like that.

Look closely at the picture of the part if you're not sure of what I'm talking about.

5 out of 5 eggsI guess I have to give this a 5

Pros: After returning another vendor's attempt to get this right to the store I purchased it from, I purchased this one and guess what? ... it works!!! with 64bit vista too, nice... however I probably should add that it does not work with vista w/ the CD it comes with. You need to go to the web site to download the drivers but not a big deal.

I'll give you a heads up too ... installing the vista driver takes a long time too, I thought it was going to fail and then, voila! I can move on to more important things :)

Cons: none...

Other Thoughts: The drivers make the difference... I guess plenty of companies can make the HW but startech got it right, great job.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally!

Pros: Yay! Someone got it right.
A Serial port adapter that will hold the COM port setting between different USB ports on my laptop. It does this based on the internal serial number of the adapter.
Works in Vista 64 bit as well! (and there was much rejoicing)
As an administrator that has to regularly program new equipment such as switches, pdu's and the like, this makes life nice.

Cons: Wish the cord was shorter or the USB dongle was built into the RS-232 plastic shell.
