5 out of 5 eggsPATA becomes SATA

Pros: Nice device, very useful for updating a motherboard that has no SATA ports. Easy to use, easy to install. Works well. Allows both optical and hard drives on the card simultaneously. Allows boot from either, but may depend on which is "master".

Cons: Hmmm... I can think of improvements, so I would not call them cons.

Other Thoughts: I would like to put two of these on the motherboard. However, with the limited space between the two PATA connectors, I fear the two cards would likely touch.

Would be nice if startech explained what the jumper was for.

Also, I did not experience any of the faults reported by the other reviewers, especially the constant disk led being on. Mine worked as expected.

I am going to get another pata2sata2, just for a spare.

1 out of 5 eggsFlimsy

Pros: None

Cons: The connector of the adapter to the PATA is very flimsy. The SATA cables which connect to the adapter do not click into place, they just slide in.
This is fault of the adapter, not the cables. They slide off just as easily as they slide on, and I have no doubts that after a while they will eventually just fall out of the adapters during use, which could lead to corrupted data.
Not recommended at all.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work in my case

Pros: in theory, it should easy to use - a pure plug (P4 power cable to juice up the card, SATA cables to up to 2 SATA devices) and play deal.

Cons: - doesn't work with my AMD and Win 7 refurbished PC, whether the device added is a hard disk, a DVD player, or both. Windows simply doesn't recognize any device in Explorer or in the Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management or Device Manager panels.
- the instruction says no need to set jumper, but there is a 3-prong jumper with 3 possible settings (without jumper, with jumper block at the 2 left prongs, with jumper block at the 2 right prong). Tried them all with reboot, of course. No jumper position works.
- the instruction also says for the latest info, go to the web...where a PDF of the exact same instruction sheet is seen (yet another circular reference)

Other Thoughts: bought device in a real store because I need the device like now. Was able to return with full refund in 2 days.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible packaging

Pros: None

Cons: Never even got to test the product. It was packages so poorly that the jumper pins were pushed through the hard plastic case it came in and almost broke them right off. Bent beyond repair so completely useless on arrival.

2 out of 5 eggsWarning: 2x HDDs only

Pros: supports 2x SATA HDDs from single PATA IDE channel so don't lose drive capacity

Cons: Only works reliably when 2x SATA HDDs are attached (UDMA5). Burst mode cap at around 90 MB/s (HD Tach)

Single-drive setup hangs WinXP boot (safe mode and GUI), or when boots works as UDMA2 (burst 33 MB/s)

Other Thoughts: Tested this on three different motherboards, all had major problems or failed with single-HDD setup.

Single-drive setup appears to work OK when plugged into Promise Ultra100/133 PCI controller, but not tested as thoroughly.

Like all of these CCBAs (connectors, converters, bridges and adapters) it passes all the SMART data using smartmontools: ID, Data and error/self-test logs. The HBAs (Host Bus Adapters) do not pass the error/self-test logs.

5 out of 5 eggsSeveral installed, - works very well

Pros: Pleasently suprised at the speed and engineering that went into this little gem. I also have experience with the previous version pata2sata that worked well, but I can tell this is the refined version and is hands-down the best yet. It has the smarts to handle >1TB drives. The new version has a lower profile and is easy to setup as well.

Cons: None comes to mind

- also, I never experienced the slow boot time or the
HD LED indicator staying on as described in a previous review here in the 4 systems I've done the install on.

3 out of 5 eggsCould be better

Pros: It works, just not the way i wanted it to.

Cons: It keeps the hard drive activity light on Constantly No matter if your useing it for dvd drive or hard drive, At Every Bootup it HANGS at the post while detecting IDE Drives, it will hang for about 2 minutes and then go ahead and push threw to the desktop, so it makes bootup time much longer. You Cant boot from cd on this device, You also Cant Boot XP useing this thing, its Only good for adding another SATA Drive for storage but not booting to an OS like XP or what ever.

Other Thoughts: its ok i guess for storage, i'm useing a Seagate Sata 500GB for storing some files, but i realy dont like the fact that it keeps my hard drive light on constantly. this will dew for a few months til i replace my motherboard for one that has plenty sata ports.
