3 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 Driver Available!

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do.
Was able to find a working driver from the OEM: Magic Control Technology.

Cons: Extremely poor driver support from startech.com.
Not a DisplayLink chipset.

Other Thoughts: I originally was using this product with Windows XP The drivers provided from startech.com were abysmal, same problems as everyone else: hard system freezes, display artifacts, etc.

The hard freezes eventually made me stop using the product.

On a whim today I decided to re-visit this device, startech.com still doesn't have a driver, but the OEM does!

Magic Control Technology's UDA200 is the exact same kit (in a white case instead of black):

http://www.mct.com.tw/products/product_uda200.html

Their driver page is here:

http://www.mct.com.tw/driver.html

And the direct link to the driver I am now using on Win7 64 is here:

http://www.mct.com.tw/upload/Driver/UDA200_10.03.zip

You won't get Aero support in Windows 7 (which now seems to be possible with current DisplayLink based devices, including those from startech.com).

However, the product is now actually functional!

This is a bit late, but I decided to post just in case anyone else was in the same boat as

2 out of 5 eggsIt works, for a certain period of time

Pros: It works for about the first hour or so

Cons: The screen will freeze up, although sometimes its just the windows on the monitor that will freeze, but I can move my mouse.

If I'm lucky, I can click on a frozen window, and then drag it to one of the other two monitors, without the program freezing up.

The monitor's refresh rate lags quite a bit.

Other Thoughts: I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit on an Acer 8930G.

It has a 1GB Nvidia 9600M GT, Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz, 4 GB DDR3 Ram.

Both of my external monitors are Asus vh222. One runs at 1920 x 1080. The one on this card runs at 1680 x 1050 32 bit color.

Tried upgrading to Windows 7, had to restore windows Vista to get it to work :(

Also, both of my external monitors had these weird, thin, white horizontal lines flashing with windows 7 (I had to try each external monitor separately). When I went back to Vista, they were gone.

Pros: none so far as cannot use

Cons: Bought new computer along with this product. Did not know that it had now drivers for windows 7. Contacted company and they said they would be available soon. None so far so don't buy this if you want to use it with windows 7 until drivers become available.

Other Thoughts: Tied to use StarTech live chat but now one ever answers so just call tech suport who are not too helpful since they could not give a date for the drives. Wish I had just sent it back.

3 out of 5 eggsNice Picture, Some Issues

Pros: Nice picture, ability to add second display to laptop.

Cons: System keeps locking up with no warning at all. I am running WinXP SP3 on a Dell E6500. I bought a HannsG 28" LCD as my primary (very nice, also bought at NewEgg) and an Acer 23" LCD as my secondary display. Everything looks great. I am running Excel, Word, FF 3.5 and FileZilla and Arachnophilia HTML editor. I move the browser window over to the secondary monitor to see website changes as I upload them. When I am using the browser, the screen locks up and the computer freezes, including the mouse cursor. I will try not having the browser on the secondary monitor (maybe JavaScript is the problem, as someone said Java makes this adapter flaky). I'll update this review if I get the freeze problem corrected.

3 out of 5 eggsNot like a card but good for what it is

Pros: Easy to setup. included software not bad.

Cons: 16megs of ram not really enough to drive 1680x1050 at 32.
just moving a single browser window around at that resolution slow and jumpy. Fine though for pushing windows you don't actually need to do much with for viewing into. Probably faster at lower resolution.

Other Thoughts: Software a touch buggy, sometimes needing to turn on and off the external display with the included application before the monitor comes on, howeve once setup, the system has not failed to bring up the monitor with presets after a reboot.

4 out of 5 eggsGREAT product, tiny flaws

Pros: Very simple install at about 5 minutes, integrates into windows display settings for easy configuration, several resolution settings, compact for travel or space issues, great for a NOC dislpay or multihead project work

Cons: has limited resolution settings for larger (42"+) widescreen 16:10 monitors, loading Java apps on the screen attached to this device WILL bring the computer down (that is a problem for anyone using data management software, SANs, Load Balancers, etc...)

Other Thoughts: For text work, and even 2D graphical work, this device is amazing. I have few problems with it, and they are only minor inconveniences. regarding the Java issue, if you load the java app on a different screen (one hooked directly to the computer), and then move the app to this device's monitor, the computer will not crash. Loading a Java app directly to this device will cause a hard restart. Barring that, buy this device.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: DVI Picture is awesome. The software install is awesome. I had to reboot twice. I really like this device for a secondary monitor. I use it for office applications. It would fine for development needs.

Cons: Video playback is choppy. Mouse is choppy at very high speeds. Not intended for game play.

Other Thoughts: If you use the USB to VGA on an LCD monitor, make sure recalibrate the monitor. My Samsung has a "Auto" button that does this. My Acer recalibrates when you choose a different preset brightness.
